New Brighton AFC - The Tower Athletic Grounds (including film footage)
#NewBrightonAFC #NewBrightonRakers #remembertheRakers #NewBrightonTowerAthleticGrounds
The Tower Athletic Grounds were one of two stadiums that were used by New Brighton AFC (the Rakers). After vacating the ground at Sandheys Park, following extensive bomb damage in World War II, the Rakers oversaw a number of renovations at the old Tower Grounds. League football recommenced in 1946.
The Tower Athletic Grounds date back to the late 19th century, when built as a multipurpose sports and events arena on the banks of the River Mersey in New Brighton. Built under the shadow of the short lived New Brighton Tower, the highest construction in the UK at the time it was built.
The Tower Athletic Grounds were claimed to be able to hold 80,000 people, and was the largest sports ground in the north of England. It held multiple sports including speedway, cycling, running and later stock car racing.
The Tower Grounds stadium was sold in 1977 to the Wallasey Housing Association, and today is covered mainly by a housing estate but a football pitch does survive.

Rakers on film Episode 2 - Undated New Brighton AFC game at the Tower Grounds
Переглядів 1902 роки тому
#NewBrightonAFC #NewBrightonRakers #remembertheRakers This is another in a series of short films showing the New Brighton Rakers in action. This film is undated, but judging by the New brighton kit it may show the Rakers in action, post League days, at the Tower Grounds in the late 1950's. The footage is a little dark but it still represents one of the few bits of film showing New Brighton AFC,...

Even though there are no details on this game, I am hopeful other episodes will include names of the players. I am still hoping to find any games that my Dad, William (Bill) Davenport played for the first team - he was on the reserve team for a short while; he had to give up his dream of playing for the first team due to the travel from Norris Green to New Brighton and work full-time. Keep up the research.

Sadly I found this footage on Facebook with no details. I believe the lady lived on Dalmorton Rd and her father took the footage.

I’m shocked to find out there was another team called Brighton in the football league and I’m a bit of a stato as well. I would love to know if Brighton ever played new Brighton and what a shame they are no longer a league team as I bet we would of had a bit of a rivalry going on and you don’t know if that would of change history with a rivalry with new Brighton rather than Crystal Palace as they are about 60 miles up the road anyway so distance is a problem when it comes to rivalries. This to be honest has blown me a way as I never knew there was a another league with the Brighton 👍👍😛😛

The ironic part (I think its in the video too) was that the year New Brighton failed to be re-elected to the Third Division North, Crystal Palace also had to apply for re-election to the Third Division South. Even though New Brighton had more points than Palace (and Watford, the other South team who sought re-election) New Brighton failed to gain enough votes but both Palace and Watford got re-elected. Palace and Watford then rise up the leagues, New Brighton end up going out of business. Sliding doors I think they call it. Who knows how things would have been if New Brighton had survived.

@@newbrightonafc sounds like stuffy nose men in a dark smoke filled room making decisions based on money and politics. If they gained more points than both Palace and Watford then they should of stayed in the league. Luckily now football in this country is a results based League structure and if you get less points than the team above you in a relegation battle you go down simple as that. There must be something with the name Brighton as I’m sure you know in the mid to late 1990s Brighton’s ground was sold without a new stadium being built or even a local team to groundshare with and we only stayed up during the 1996/97 season by drawing with Hereford and they ended up going down. If we would of lost that game we would of went out of business but we played at Gillinghams ground which is 70 miles away for 2 seasons and to the credit to the hardcore fans they averaged 2500-3000 every league match in the bottom division which is about the average attendance in that league anyway we then came home and spent 12 years playing at the withdean stadium which bizarrely had 6 stands with only one of those being a permanent structure and after 14 years with no proper home we moved into the Amex stadium which now holds 31800 and is one of the nicest stadiums in the country and could possibly end up with over 50 points and finish 8th which would be our highest ever position. If you didn’t know our story you would have to admit we are the most deserving team ever to get a new stadium. But going back to new Brighton it would be far more likely a rivalry would of occurred between the 2 teams if Palace would of gone out of business instead as there is no team near to us apart from Crawley who have only been a league team for 10 years or so but unfortunately we will never know which is sad.

There wasn't another Football League team in Brighton (Sussex) as New Brighton (Wirral) is nearly 400 miles away!

You find out something new every day! I’ve been a Brighton and hove Albion fan for nearly 30 years and I never knew there was a another team called Brighton in the football league and for a number of years I believe I think I just read from 1920 something to 1951. I’m also a bit of a stato so I’m shocked I never knew this. Thanks for the upload and if you have any other footage I would love to see it

Thanks for the follow. Quite a story around New Brighton, sad in many ways too. Always a shame to see a team leave the league, and in this case, go out of existence. I don't think there was a connection, but New Brighton played in a similar stripped shirt to the current Brighton team for a while too. We are working on more videos. Hope you enjoy them too. 🙂

@@newbrightonafc at the time you played in the north division but if you were a league team and even the lower divisions there no doubt would of been even a smaller amount of a rivalry just because of the name and it’s only been in the last 10 years we have been a regular in the top 2 divisions. Always sad to see a league team go as even a smallish team would still leave 1000s of fans having there lives being turned upside down with many not having something to look forward to at the weekend. Like I said I’m a bit of a stato and I only came across the team from looking at some stats from the early 1950s and I can’t believe I have never heard or come across the team of New Brighton and I’m sure to tell my sons and friends about them as the world needs to no there was once 2 Brighton teams playing in the football league. Amazing 🤩 look forward to more content and I’m going to read up about the club I’m a minute
