Why I Traded Weed for a Life of Meaning and Purpose!
I share my personal journey through addiction with Dr Lembke, particularly focusing on my experiences with cannabis and the path to recovery. I discuss the emotional and psychological struggles that accompany addiction, the role of dopamine in addiction dynamics, and the importance of support systems in overcoming these challenges. We discuss the complexity of addiction, highlighting how the pursuit of substances can shift from seeking pleasure to avoiding pain, and the necessity of understanding these mechanisms for effective recovery.

I loved your response to this Joe Rogan podcast - Mike can you say more about the measurement based care? I am a newer therapist and would love to know more about this, perhaps a separate episode on how to measure improvement with clients. I know we can use self report inventories and also the relationship rating scale, but is there anything else?

Dismissing critiques as "You spot it you got it" is just lazy. You can use it for anything and it's completely unfalsifiable.
How do you navigate feelings of guilt? What did you think of this interaction?
Very useful video. Please think about adding subtitles. It would really help.
Could we get this video remade with subtitles please? I mean edited
you can turn on subtitles with youtube?
The subtitles that you tube provides are not really accurate actually.
I wish Doctor's Mike was more clear.
It's because they were focused on you. If someone is focused on you and they have high anxiety, you can hear what they think. But don't assume that that's the person or their personality or what they think of you. It's just a thought
thanks for watching and for taking the time to share!
While I was listening to you both I started to cry. I saw myself in the park when I was 6 years old feeling separated from the other kids. I don't know if my sexual predator was there at the time but he often was. ...I don't know if I was feeling guilt (which you were both discussing) I had wave upon wave of crying rise up through me and I also remembered sitting in the Espresso Cafe when I was 16 at Art College and tears streaming nonstop down my face for what felt like forever. I am responsible for myself now. Is it OK to keep crying or not.
Thank you for sharing that beautiful response. I wish you the best on your journey.🙏🙏

Respectfully, before you suggest RFK Jr deserves a seat at the covid table… you should educate yourself. I suggest the video on this topic by a microbiologist named Dr Wilson
I am not convinced that all opinions can be sanitized with a glib trope that…. lex has opinions. My opinion is that we cannot fail to appreciate that lex friedman is a person who admires a guy who argues that AIDS IS not caused by HIV … (RFK Jt.). My husband is 63 wakes up and goes to the garage and smokes his bong, does a few things goes back to the garage smokes his bong, we go put to eat he comes back and smokes his bong in the garage . He comes in a little later watches family guy and the news and then goes back out to the garage and smokes his bong until supper then comes in eats and watches leave it to beaver or family guy and then goes back out to the garage and smokes his bong comes in a little later and watches news and then before bed goes back out to the garage and smoke his bong. He also works from home and smokes during the day when not on phone calls. He use to drive and smoke it in a pipe i told him i wouldnt ride with him so now he vapes it which is still smoking it. He told me hes a better driver and person on it because hes not addicted to it. There is never a good time to talk to him about anything because he is always high and he says im just a downer. I dont smoke it but like alcohol i can take a gummie or a drink once in awhile. He stsrted when he was 15 and hasnt stopped. He wont stop or cut back he says he has no issue and if i have issues with it i can leave. We have been married 13 years. He says he has way more friends than me but none of them even know he smokes weed. I am ready to leave! He is in the gsrage more than in the house and smoking weed morning noon and night. He got a ticket for having it in his car once and lost his license for 30 days he was thinking of leaving me because i was so upset about it and he said it was no big deal! He was also an alcoholic and says that almost killed him but weed is different! Hes spent almost all our money on it makes horrible financial decisions and is now looking for a new job very slowly. I asked what if he is drug tested and he said no biggy he can get it out of his system in no time but that he is not worried or stopping until that day he is told he needs a drug test. He is mad he may even have to take one.
Its not only the God thing that is a problem in AA. AA has a 5-10% success rate, and it is the voices of that 5-10% heard extolling its virtues. AA is vehemently being debunked by professionals in the field. If you are struggling in AA. IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT. You are not "constitutionally incapable of being honest" with yourself. AA's idealogy can be damaging for some and even deadly. If you're one of the 5-10%, my "hat is off to you," but please do not encourage struggling, vulnerable people to get into the program more. 5-10% is pretty low odds to bet someones life on!
It is so hurting to feel his pain. Because it is really meaningless to make him suffered that way. what he tried to death was just simple to make his parents happy. It feels like that it is betrayed totally.

Unless your anxiety won't even allow you to access the fellowship then what somehow it's your fault you didn't try hard enough
Hey, it’s not about “fault” it’s about responsibility. It’s hard to communicate these things over the comment section. This note comes with compassion which you can’t really feel through the text. Simply, it’s your responsibility to learn how to manage your anxiety so that you can address other things in your life. It’s not fair per se, it’s just reality. If we hide behind the excuses, then we never get anywhere.

Thanks for watching. I’m glad you found it enjoyable!! I appreciate the encouraging words. I’m also quite curious to see how it unfolds, and what the “real world” consequences will be for Mr Beast and his empire
What are you chasing? Can you notice when you get lost in this trap? ps. sorry for the bad audio, drives me mad when I screw it up.
Dr. Gabor Mate is right tracing it back to your childhood. Because you can not have any guilt etc. later on in life when there is no root cause for it. And root causes are mostly in the childhood. You are not developing guilt in the addiction phase. It was already in you and just got activated. This is what he tried to make you understand at that moment.
Hey, thanks so much for watching and sharing your insights. I understand this/his perspective on the situation. I fundamentally disagree with his stance on the matter. Not everything is about childhood, not everything is about our mothers/parents. Guilt is not a bad emotion, nor is shame its close cousin. These are emotions, they are often unpleasant. We need them for social and relationship cohesion. It's ok to have them, it's when we get caught and sucked into misery and unhealthy behaviour that it's an issue. Anyway, that's my two cents. Had the situation of the interaction been different, if I had more time to ask more questions and push back on some of his comments, I would've have and this would've been one of them. Thanks again for watching. It's very difficult to have this conversation in the comment section. take it easy, peace out!
First of all, no contacts to what the hell you're even talking about for almost the first three minutes of your video. The only reason why I listened for so long was because I was driving. And then five minutes before you even really get to the topic of discussion.
Hey! thank you for the feedback and for being forced to listen to the whole thing! I'll aim to get to the topic faster. I'm genuinely curious. Did you want the stoic reading to be introduced more quickly? Let me know, thanks
I used to smoke 1-1.5 grams per day, and now I'm on my path to quitting. Currently, I only smoke on the weekends, usually on Saturday. I avoid smoking on Friday because it's already late after work, and I don't smoke on Sunday to allow time to recover for the upcoming week. If quitting step by step or going cold turkey doesn't work for you, try my method. I don't use alcohol or any other drugs, so I haven't decided to quit entirely; this allows me to have at least some relaxation of this kind of things. 1. Focus on one day at a time. You don't have to make it through the whole week-just try to make it through today. 2. If you start thinking of excuses to smoke, remember that addiction only protects itself. It's not YOU who wants to smoke; it's the cerebellum (the part of the brain closest to the dopamine channels). There is no rational thinking in this part of the brain, which is why it's more difficult to say one thing but do another. 3. Keep your focus on the main goal that is quiting weed. Exercising, eating healthy, being productive etc comes later! 4. Embrace withdrawal symptoms because it is your body healing itself!
thank you for watching and sharing your wisdom!!

I enjoy the Decoding boys content. I feel that the boys speak with extreme sarcasm to some of the points their subjects present to magnify the point the presenter is using to over speak their audience.
I enjoy it a lot of the time, mostly when they don't act so pompous and self-righteous. They never take the piss out of themselves or point out their own flaws which I also find quite shameful considering the essence of their content. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
They take the piss of themselves all the time, in my opinion@@StartsWithMeChannel
Anyone in your life that guilt trips you all the time? How are you dealing with it?
Decoding the Gurus is definitely one of my new favorite podcasts. It's such a breath of fresh air in a sea of bad-faith actors, whether they be actual grifters (e.g. Dave Rubin), extremely audience captured (e.g. Bret Weinstein), faux centrists (e.g. Lex Fridman), or just not that bright (e.g. Joe Rogan). I definitely agree that the hosts could have been better at sharing their counter-arguments to Lex re: COVID policies, etc. I think they took it for granted that their audience has already heard the repeated debunkings of people like RFK or Bret Weinstein, so felt it unnecessary to repeat these arguments. But a lot of people still need to hear it, because they're likely only being fed from a certain outrage media funnel. As an aside, I think that the COVID policy *messaging* was the worst thing, but by and large the accurate message was there as long as people were willing to put a little bit of effort into listening to actual experts. But that's a tall order for many if not most people. Think of all the people who heard Dr. Fauci give completely reasonable advice when there were only about 100 cases in the USA, namely "There's no need to rush out and get a mask now", and interpreted this as "Dr. Fauci said that masks don't work." Of course it's not that people were listening to Dr. Fauci directly, but they were listening to the politically charged outrage media reporting of this, and were basically _told_ the conclusion rather than coming to it themselves. And this black and white thinking, whether fed from the media or formed naturally, is a big part of the problem. The COVID pandemic showed us the types of black and white thinkers who, if told by the CDC: "You should social distance 6 feet apart", would interpret this as: "If you stay 6 feet apart, you'll never get COVID, and if you stay only 5.5 feet apart, you will surely get COVID and die." And then if anything happens to contradict this black and white understanding, they'll declare "The CDC lied to us! Dr. Fauci is a fraud!" etc. So yeah that's a long-winded way of saying that the messaging should be more explicit--though I'm not sure it would work even then, since an expert expressing doubt and humility is an invitation for laypeople to let in all sorts of bad ideas from bad actors.
Thank you for the thoughtful comment! Very well said. I just wanted to mention that quickly. Don’t have time to respond in kind but aim to at a later date. Thanks again, 🙏🙏
@@StartsWithMeChannel No problem, I'm long-winded and opinionated so I don't expect a response to everything. 😃
Valuable information 😊 thanks
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and for the encouraging words!
30:42 - I believe that Dr. Maté is simply pointing out the root of addiction here; that addiction itself is a coping mechanism for pain stemming from unresolved childhood experiences that we weren’t equipped to handle that later took the form of addiction. It’s not either/or; it’s both/and but one precedes the other
Agree!
Hey, thank you for taking the time to watch and share your insights! I understand his perspective, although I don't necessarily agree with it. I discussed this with Dr Anna Lembke who is also a world renowned addiction specialist here. I think she does a better job of describing what I was trying to say. You might find it interesting. ua-cam.com/video/Z42aDDV_XMU/v-deo.html
@@StartsWithMeChannel that video certainly has a juicy title 😅 Thanks for the link. Watched it and found it interesting indeed. I stand by my original comment of both/and. I don’t enjoy labeling views as right or wrong, something I learned from the late Dr Marshall Rosenberg.
@carlagordillo312 thanks for watching! And for the thoughtful comments. I agree, yes it’s a “juicy” 😉 title. I also agree with the notion of not getting into right/wrong…although the origins of that are ancient and come from many wisdom traditions.

I had some of the same questions about Fauci - the apparent collusion with Daszak to derail investigations, the Collins emails about trying to shut down dissenting scientists like Bhattacharya. As someone who can't follow this stuff full time, I find it curious that the don't bring laypersons up to speed & they don't mention all this stuff about Fauci in the Fauci-vs-Kennedy segment. Maybe they have an audience that has discounted these things about Fauci and are speaking insider-speak? Or maybe Fauci successfully countered the allegations.
Thanks for watching. It’s a difficult thing to follow!
