@Flamingdwolf that is very poor excuse for poor performance. Our schools use to and expect excellence, now they are worried about "feelings". Students can perform poorly, but instead of teaching them up, we tell them they are ok. This has nothing to do with Japanese vs USA culture, it has everything to do with preparing our kids to compete with the best, when you applaud kids for a very poor performance, you are actually hurting their growth, and teaching them that sub-standard is really ok. And when these kids grow up, they will pass the same untenable philosophy. In Japan and S. Korea, they teach and expect excellence, and that results in superior products. Unfortunately, we stopped teaching excellence decades ago, starting in the '60s, and started focusing on "feelings". Consequently, every year in the international math & science test, every industrialized nation beats our "best and brightest", but hey...they feel "good" about themselves. Feeling good about being dead last every year is not much of a consolation. You say Japan is just different from us, indeed they are, but that difference has made them better in many ways. But it's ok, because we're happy with ourselves...as they pass us up.
