The amp presets are great through a transistor clean amp
Nice one Rob, yes they can be useful that way if you set the amp to be at flat as possible. You're best to turn off the speaker sim on the GT1 inside it's amp settings so you're not emulating a speaker through a speaker, unless of course the real speaker you're going through is FRFR. Also, if you can bypass the preamp section on your transistor amp by using an effects "return" input, you'll bypass the eq stage of the amp and get a clearer representation of what the GT1 can do. All the best 🤘
I really enjoy you and your channel. Have you experimented with using the GT-1 pedal to use as a foot controller for software amp sims? Can it be done? 🤘🤓
Thanks for the kind words Timothy. I've never looked into that tbh. I don't think it's part of this unit's capabilities but I could be wrong. Let me know if you get it to work like that! 👍
I'm also a big GT1 fan (use it as a flyrig for out-of-town gigs, at home I'm primarily a Kemper and actual tube amp guy) - question for you, my biggest gripe with the GT1 is that it lacks a bypass switch and you have to set up a dedicated patch for this purpose - I've never been able to get a fully "flat" bypassed sound, with all effects switched off I find the guitar tone is slightly dulled/lifeless. Not sure if that has to do with the internal buffer. Note that I do have the Noise Suppressor switched off. I find that using the natural amp pre-amp, I can liven things up to some extent, but it bugs me that I have to do this - was wondering if you had any suggestions as to how to deal with this situation (and if not, no worries :) ). Thanks!
Hey Dan thanks for the message. If you turn the tuner on using the up+down footswitches you can use the top right knob to set it to mute, thru or bypass. It's still not true bypass but it could save you from setting up a separate patch. Obviously this means it wouldn't mute the tuner. Everything is a trade off with a unit at this size and budget. Hope that helps! 🤘
Nice one Gary 🙌
Cheers Scott! Glad you dig it. I'm curious what bands it reminds you of?
@@garyjohnstonemusic guitar, drums and bass are reminiscent of Rage Against the Machine, maybe a bit of Korn. Vocals I can’t put my finger on, but song easily belongs in a Kerrang playlist in the late 90s or early 2000s
@@scottjameswatson Aw hells yeah I'll take that thanks man, just gotta wait another 5-10 years for the emo renaissance to happen and we're golden 🤣🤘
Great rant about the little bugger there mate, I agree with lot's of your rant and further advice too! the internal switchovers unto killing the crowd a tad possibly late are what I term internal latency of some sort with the little monkey, there are easy solutions to most things and I know a few of them, they aren't overly expensive and nail the drag if it's itching anyone. I loved your wholesome rant about the unit, very honest and straight down the middle style which is more helpful than digressing too much, ...I think it's at its best when used via a method of avoiding any conventional type guitar amp completely, it becomes an entirely different beast when given the chance to breathe as it can without such, I consider my personal use preference to be the replacement of conventional style guitar amp replacement, in my view its more usable when not restricted by whatever its being harnessed-in by so to speak....if they built it onto a 'proper cabinet' it would be for most all that's every needed for most likewise, I think most players naturally view and use it as some enhancement which is fine too, but it can shift gears to the point of murdering the chase via the almost never ending quest for the goal.
Hey man thanks for the comment and the kind words. If you know how to kill that latency on this unit do let me know. It only happens with a couple of FX most namely the RAT. The cabinet version you speak of may be the Boss Katana which is essentially this pedal in a combo form. I've tried it a few times and it sounds great, has an FRFR speaker and has variable power options so is proper versatile, but I myself can't see past using a modded Blues Junior as a base tone. The GT1 is a toolbox between the guitar and the amp. However I do frequently use the pedal's amp and speaker sims for recording, streaming, or DI to PA on small stages or if I can't be bothered taking the amp. Cheers for stopping by 👍
@@garyjohnstonemusic I was aware immediately that the Katana amp series was more than likely the unit itself in the form of a small combo from the get go and also in my ears, it was being hemmed in by the nature of the cab and it's speaker and powering stage itself, I'm not into FRFR terminology personally, although it's a vast improvement over a conventional older or conventional cab signal stream, mainly because it's termed 'flat response' rather than 'full' range frequency response instead, my thinking is most conventional guitar amps are either d.i'd or mic'd up then sent to FOH, -they usually sound better afterwards only because they are in a p.a. as the end result, I find any decent live p.a. ought to contain a minimum 15'' and horn to get over any stage situation and mob live, I use a pair of 15's x 2 way as my 'stage guitar rig/cab/s', it's no bigger nor more inconvenient than lugging a 4x12 or two and in my experience instantly murders any conventional cab of 2x12 or 4x12 or a pair of 4x12's etc..I juice my GT-1 with a Crown power amp with the GT-1 into a small portable mixer with a slight tweak in my mids and it's the goat. Apart from my personalised parameters in the unit, I turbo the signal process via an F.A.-1 (original) for good measure, it sounds frigging ballistic to state the least mate...the output designation on the GT-1 is more than critical to get right or it is a wasted effort. I honestly do my frigging best not to be one-eyed about it as much as possible, but theres no tone I can't stand toe-to-toe with and in fact further enhance or improve via a GT-1.....they are not for the faint hearted good mate! 👍 I love your work Gary, you understand the unit too better than most I've noticed. To me, it's never about price or cost, it's always ONLY ever about tone unto end goal.
The only other two products that have given my ears get a stiffy recently are Boss's new GX-10 and the new Soldano X88-IR purple rack unit, as nice as both are for sure, I still prefer my GT-1 - I might get both just for my recording projects up the track eventually for further noodling about....the new little GX10 is a beast used in it's x-modded x2 with the IR OWNHAMMER 412 RECT ...bloody gorgeous!!!!! -here's an example of it around the 6:58 mark in a demo recently, I hope you don't mind Gary, it's worth an earful because i know you and your subs are fellow hunters for the grail tones like myself mate.. 🍺🔥 enjoy! ua-cam.com/video/Kjfk_zCYut0/v-deo.html
Here's a fun fact, -the GT-1 is capable of outputting tones that other units simple can't, -including other Boss units costing several times it's initial outlay -it can be used in 'chimp' mode or God mode depending on a few simple factors on any signal chain to final unto ears in any setting, there are some great units available via several brands including dedicated conventional guitar amps and even boutique rigs costing a small country...the fun bit is they can and are the weapon of choice for both pro player producer and complete beginner, in my opinion and consistent user experience they are one of two of the smartest products Roland/Boss have ever availed. -get one and get into it at any level. 🔥
Muito bom, puta que pariu. Já sabia que a qualidade sonora dessa pedaleira era boa, mas essas configurações, nossa... A Boss tirou muita onda. Parabéns pela vídeo, puta ideia. Me fez querer investir numa dessa.
Hey man thanks for the comment. You're right, this pedal has changed the game for compact modellers and it's just a great tool for anyone, even as a spare once it's set up the way you want it. Any questions let me know 👍
tip - if using non boss external footswitch it has to be of normal closed type - (NC) - or else it will wind up or down after being pressed
Good call man, I made that mistake with an unbranded non-latching switch til I realised what the issue was 👍
Thanks for the walk thru, it was very helpful!
@@ExpandingSpirits glad to be of service 😁
Great vid, is there an easy way to bypass the whole GT-1 as well?
Yes! Turn the tuner on by pressing up and down simultaneously then use dial 3 to change output to BYPASS. Note though this is a universal setting and not saveable by patch.
@@garyjohnstonemusic thanks for replying, I've just got the GT-1 after 27 years of using stomp boxes and I'm struggling massively! I still want my Orange Rockerverb 50 amp sounds but my fx in one place, but setting the Gt-1 up to do this I'm finding complicated, I've purchased an Fs-6 switch so hopefully can work it out!
Nice mate
Thanks a lot! 🤘
Great video Gary! Can you assign the CTL1 button to be boost and delay in the one button? Also, tremolo and chorus in one button?
Yes you can! I'm actually planning on explaining that on my next in-depth tutorial. It's possible to make some pedals (CTL1, EXP1 plus other external pedals) perform up to 6 functions simultaneously using the assign functions in the MEM EDIT menu. It's pretty crazy that you can even assign a second function to the onboard EXP1, although it's very tricky to also use it as a wah within the same patch, because if you press it fully it will keep the wah effect on but turn on or off whatever else you've assigned to it. Quite complicated but all will be revealed when I get some free time!
Thanks for the good video Gary. I love my GT-1 too, just struggling with a couple points if you can give any hints: When I try to use a heavy lead tone for a strong riff where I need volume high, the signal coming out of the GT-1 is clipped before I can do anything on the mixer. The only way I can remediate this is to lower the patch level, effect level or gain, all of which compromises the volume I need. Am I missing something? Would connecting a DI box between the GT-1 and the mixer help? The other issue is: I could not find a way to turn on "trail" for the delay/reverb effects, resulting in rough transitions between patches in the middle of a song. I guess this is a limitation on this model? Thanks again.
Hello again sir! I haven't experienced any clipping tbh but I don't use big volume jumps. A rule of thumb I follow is master output level at 120 and every patch level at 100. If it's going into the red on your desk with the loudest sound I reckon you're best to decrease the input gain or trim on the desk then work backwards from that. The trail issue is as you said may be a limitation of this model, I'll have to check that out. Sorry I couldn't be more help on this one!
I have been using the GT-1 since 2017 in plus-minus 50 gigs (blues band and guitar duo) and numerous rehearsals. Besides the tones and ease of use, the unique selling point was the battery usage. I finally switched to the HX Stomp due to the fact that the GT-1 is missing the traditional stomp switches. The plastic switches were never my favourite. Nevertheless thumbs up for the Boss GT-1. The GT-1 is still in use by our singer who plays guitar during the gig on a few songs without the need for preset switching.
@@ronyschouterden7686 Thanks for the comment. Great that your singer is getting use out of the GT1. If you want to use it as a box unit you can check out my other vids. Hope they're of use to you 🙏 👍
Hi Gary, thanks for the videos on the Boss GT1, I was looking for something to play with and found a music shop selling it new for £175, I know it’s not a latest thing, but after watching you, I know it’s gonna be all I need. You’re a great guitarist, thanks again🎸
Thanks a lot! If you have any Q's drop me a comment on one of the GT1 videos. Best of luck with it!
This is really useful. Thanks. I wonder why digital chains go the right and physical ones to the left. Also, any hints on how to avoid volume variations when switching patches when playing live?
I wondered that aswell tbh but once you start customising you can have it either way which is great. Volume variations are just trial and error, you need to cycle through them and set everything to be level. You could use a DB meter to get it in the ball park. Either way, this is really what you'd have to do if you were using various physical amps anyway so I say just find a way to hook it up and rock out at gig levels then try and set the master on each patch to be similar.
Thanks. That was pretty useful! I was about to throw the GT-1 out the window. This video has saved the pedal board. A great tone and a great playing. Best regards from Spain.
Glad you decided to stick with it! Hopefully you'll get more use out of it now. Any questions let me know!

Thank you sir, I'm glad the video was of use to you! Will put your suggestion in the list of ideas for future videos, although I'm not much of a shredder so don't expect any double tapping or sweep picking in the demo 😂
Love it. I have a Katana MK2 for when I need an amp and a GT1 for if I'm going into a PA, and it's fab. Great video
Brilliant Paul thanks for the comment. The Katana's are astounding but my Blues Junior gets jealous whenever I even look at another amp 😂 Although I have been known to use the awesome amps sims when streaming or DI to PA in emergencies. Very handy to have.
Brilliant video, I now have a stomp box setup and it definitely seems a more intuitive way to use the GT-1 than the normal way i.e. having two switches set to bank increase/decrease. I wonder though, how do you get the GT-1 to sound good without enabling any effects? I use a Roland JC-22 with a vintage Tiesco Audition amp via FX Loop Out/Instrument In and I want to use that combo as my clean tone as it's superb as it is, but no matter how I try to preserve it, it just doesn't sound as good when going through through the GT-1 as it does when going straight into the front of my JC-22. Fwiw, the Audition is an old amp that was made between 1970-73 and voiced to the amp sounds of the day, probably why it sounds so good. You can see it here in this video by Dave Simpson: ua-cam.com/video/UInkjbRKKR8/v-deo.html I hope this makes sense. The wee Audition amp, which I picked up in a charity shop here in Glasgow, has transformed my guitar playing experience completely and now, as a two-amp combo, none of the clean tones on the GT-1 sounds anywhere near as good. But the problem is, I would like to use my GT-1 to add a bit of OD and delay, depending on what I'm playing without decimating the JC-22+Audition combo.. I'd really appreciate your help on this, cheers, DJ EDIT: I guess I also mean using effects as well. Anything that will preserve the combined sound of my two-amp combo.
Hello sir! Thanks for the comment/query. Tbh, in my experience, with all effects turned off I didn't notice much degradation of tone, but I rarely play super clean the way you probably are with your setup. I always like a bit of grit even on my "cleanest" sound. There are always going to be pros and cons to such a small and low priced unit. I think the GT1 is aimed at people who want an easier load in at the expense of tonal sacrifice. I have a 70s VC30 and a full stomp box board which I rarely use at gigs since I got this which I put through a Blues Junior. Sounds like you might wanna stick with an analog pedalboard with modular effects going via the effects loop as this will almost always be preferable for players like yourself who are looking for crystal clear tone. The GT1 is not True Bypass so you're not going to get 100% transparency on the way in. The closest way to that I've found is to have the master vol on the GT1 at 120 and all patches at 100, or engage the tuner and set to bypass, but then you can't use the FX obvs. You could use just the mod effects via the effects loop. Judging by your tonal/practical goals it sounds like maybe this one isn't for you. I hope you find the right rig for your needs. The pursuit of tone is never ending eh 😂
@@garyjohnstonemusic Cheers Gary, that's a quality reply :)
I bought a Boss RC-600 a few weeks ago and I'm still trying to figure it out. That said, the one feature I wrongly assumed it had was the ability to sequence tracks so that you could programme a sequence and then viola, you'd have a song cued up, with all the different parts lined up to play automatically in the right order. Boss might well add this feature in a future update but as it is, it doesn't have the main feature I wanted it to have. I should have done my research! Anyway, thanks for the Boss GT-1 vids, they've been great:) DJ
😂😂 aww G only you mate 😂. Also maybe don't sit at the speaker 😂. #originalsalways (Genuinefface btw) 😂
Oh if only we could make a living from playing our own tunes. Tbh we'd probably get bored of them rapid aswell 🤣 More live streaming coming up tho
so if you gig with the gt1 do bring an amp or run straight to a mixing board? which amp do your run with it?
Either blues junior with a V30 or HK tubemeister. If I have to run it through the PA, the amp sims do the job for the types of gigs most working musicians do. Helix and Kemper are still the best amp SIM guys out there imo but I guarantee, to get 90% of the way there, and if you're happy to use your time instead of your money, the GT1 will get you there. Happy tinkering dude 😎
A lot of these can be done WAYYY easier with the Boss Tone Studio on your PC. Saves a lot of time too.

Had mine for four years. Still finding great sounds after much knob twiddling. I have spent many thousands on gear over the years, but this little cracker is all you will need . I use it in front of a boss katana 100 and is a perfect match plus one trip from the car to the stage. Brilliant !
Great to hear we're on the same page man. Most of the negative comments I get about these vids are from people who are expecting way too much from a tiny $200 floor unit. Like yeh, it works for 90% of practical bar gig applications but Mayer probably wouldn't be seen dead with it 😂
Great video. Thank you!
You're very welcome 😁
I got mine in 2018 & can’t believe how great it is. I use it to record with 99% of the time & my tone-snob friends all think I’m miking my amps. I’d buy it again.
This is amazing! I love confusing the tone snobs with the GT1. Although I am a tone snob, so I continuously confuse myself with why I keep using it 🤷
VERY HELPFUL
Thank you glad it was useful 😁
I cant figure out how to change patches from external footswitch. How did you do that?
Follow the steps in the video. It's all about changing the assigns from the UP/DOWN buttons to the CTL2/3 which are the external buttons.
Does setting it up like this affect the controls for looping?
You can still engage the looper by pressing middle and right buttons together, the only problem is you then can't use the right button for whatever effect it was assigned to because it then becomes the record/stop/dub button 👍
I've been using my GT1 for over a year now and I keep finding amazing (useable) new sounds. Personally, I find life easier when I edit it using Tone Studio, although it's certainly a good idea to know your way around the actual unit for live settings if thing go pear-shaped.
Absolutely! I wanted to focus the vids on using the unit standalone to show how to tweak in on the fly. Obviously we can sit and set for hours on the software but when you get to a gig and your amp is running hot and your drive ain't cutting, you need to know how to edit on site. Hope it's still working for you 👍
I've had a bunch of these different modelers. The GT -1 punches WAY above its weight. I have HX stuff, never had Fractal or Kemper though. GT-1 is a great unit especially for the price point. Small and fits in a gig bag, can run on batteries, it's hard to go wrong. And a lot of features Boss has had for years that many don't know like Acoustic simulation, Hum to single imitation, Single to Hum imitation, it's pretty crazy. No hate from me.
Brilliant that you've had such a great experience with this unit Scott. I think some folk on this channel are forgetting I'm not selling anything. I just love this unit after years of looking for something just like it. Any Q's let me know but if you're used to HX this should be a walk in the park 👍
@@garyjohnstonemusic Thanks, Gary. That's the one thing with Boss stuff, their interface could be a little better. The better part is there's so much great gear to play through these days.
@@Scott__C ha I think the term for the GT1 is "what interface?" 😂 Can always plug into the software but gig wise it's about right for the price point imo. They focused on the sounds instead of the buttons and screens knowing that players who wanted it would get the right use out of it. I do miss my Helix tho.
Preach bro! I used to use that single to hum effect then I discovered Thomann does a double electric backpack gig bag for £40 (at least to UK) so now I can take a Strat and LP on my back in one trip! 😎
Gary - thanks a million, your videos are the most useful and helpful I've found. I bought the GT-1 several years ago, couldn't make it do what I wanted, and put it aside and let it gather dust. Now, with your help, it has replaced my pedalboard - smaller, lighter, simpler, more options. Well done.
@@davemorrison-amurderofcrow287 Thanks Dave. I initially thought I would use the GT1 for certain smaller gigs or particular situations, but it does so much so well that I'd now be lost without it.
Dude wields it like a Light Saber, and totally appropriate for this tool. 🤙
😂💡🗡️
Tool as in me obvs 😄
Received my GT-1 - what an awesome device. Very similar to my GP-10 (without the synth of course) The footswitch mode described here by Gary works a treat. Only thing to note is there does not appear to be a way to use the Assign feature on the up/down pedals. This is a shame, as on the GP-10 I could assign multiple things to one footswitch. E.g. Overdrive + Delay. On the GT-1 The Up/Down pedals can be assigned to just a single function - e.g. Overdrive only, with no other Assigns (unless I'm missing something). Shame. It still works for me. I’m happy. But thought I’d mention it.
I haven't tried that so didn't notice it. I think you can assign CT1,CT2 + CT3 to do multiple functions. It is weird that up and down can't be used in the same way but as I say to myself every time I find something I wish I could do with this "what do we expect for £150" 😂 Happy jamming bro 👍
@@garyjohnstonemusic Too right Gary. After spending sh** loads on Kempers, Tonemaster Pro, guitar synths etc etc this is the best bang for buck music grear I’ve even bought. Keep up the great videos mate!
Best video - all questions answered 🎉
Hello Gary, thanks for the video! Do you think this is possible with a Moore ge 150?
Sorry man never used one of those. Best of luck 🤞
ok, I have added all the functionality here. Thanks bro. Is there an easy way to match the outputs per patch, so that there is not a drastic volume boost/loss in the patches during the changes, that I am using, currently 5 patches.
I have the GT-1. Mine doesn’t sound like that!😮l😂 Are you running that through your tube amp? Fantastic job!
Thank you sir. I believe this was the twin sim in the gt1 with the TS8 pedal sim. I went off that and now use the BD2 cos Boss emulate their own stuff way better than anything else, but for rock, the Rat SIM is pretty bang on. Watch that tone/cut knob though. Like the pedal it's brutally sensitive.
I think these devices are so capable of sculpting 'personalised' tone, they are in their own right as good as a customised amp or boutique rig, theres no shortage of available obviously tweaked tones being demoed for sale only, I'm not much of a fan of the concept personally, but if there was some way I could freely avail my tones I might be interested in doing so, I think the newer capture units might be able to capture my tones and rig as I hear it slaying in any room or venue etc. I'm not willing to avail my actual tweaks per say but it might be fun to freely share perhaps my end results for them to also enjoy.
What a great looking comment. We really wish you would avail your tweaks. Maybe one day 🤞
@@garyjohnstonemusic I'm using a custom rig to play my GT-1 via, the reason my tweaks themselves won't really replicate via even another GT-1 is I'm also in-chain with a couple of original Boss FA-1 magic boxes in for the speakers end result...yeah I know I'm a bit spoiled etc, but it really is the holy grail afterall.
@@garyjohnstonemusic I think it might be wiser for me to contact Boss/Roland and offer them the gift if they'd like to insert it into their newer I.R. 2 as maybe an update in the software?
@@LIKEFUNK Good idea. I have no idea what you're talking about 👍
@@garyjohnstonemusic In the latest products like Tonex etc etc, the amps and pedals and cabs etc are only digital recordings of the to drool over types, -they are A.I. audio snapshots is all.
Good Morning again. Thanks for your replies to my crazy ideas. I have another q for you. I love my Gt1. I use a program called stagetraxx 3 for my backing tracks, and guitar on stage. My next project is to understand how to control the gt1 using stagetraxx 3 and I know thats a different thing, but I wanted to see if it can be controlled via midi for this purpose. So im hearing I can have stagetraxx 3 change soundbanks without using a foot controller. It would be so cool if it could just change the patches, like from clean to distortion, without having to stomp on switches all the time. Think I can do that with the gt1?
I hear that this has no midi capabilities, so wont work
I swore off anything digital for 20 years after the 505. I held on to my busted old green russian Big Muff like my life depended on it because of that dogshit Zoom pedal. Everyone tells me "just get a Quad Cortex, dude" or "did you lose your helix or something?" But I'd rather have 1 modest multi-effects pedal and save the rest of my money for individual pedals.
Thanks for the video… explain a lot.. 🙏🙏
Thanks bro glad it was useful to you!
Sorry if you've already answered this, but can I use the effects already on the unit in stomp box mode? Example: would I be able to put Metal Dragon on the down button and Natural Clean on the up?
Yes you could do this. Just assign the relevant effect to the UP / DOWN buttons as per the tutorial. Thanks 👍
how do you "just plug it in" without an amp, considering there is no built-in DI box?
What a lovely looking question 🤔 This video may help ua-cam.com/video/QUQ-w33V5Io/v-deo.htmlsi=gnCIpDaAbLf9QCHh
