      If you mean that some of the info is a bit outdated at this point, that’s because this video was filmed, edited, and released before any official press on the album went live Tuesday morning. There are a few gaps in hindsight but most still rings true.

    I discovered Jason relatively recently, I think 2017. Immediately searched out all his songs, both from Drive By Truckers days and then from Sirens in the ditch up until the Nashville Sound LP, and I am notified when he releases new material. I was very disappointed that he and Amanda couldn’t work things out. She helped him get sober and many of my favorite Isbell songs are about her and their daughter. Amanda Shires is an unbelievable fiddle player and harmonized well on many songs. The band still sounds great but not as great as when she was in it. Amanda laid her feelings bare on her terrific album, Take it like a Man. I’m disappointed that Jason hasn’t shown any feelings so far while she has obviously been struggling. I hope the new record will provide some insights into what his feelings are because since I came in late she and daughter Mercy were big reasons I cared so much about his music.

      I normally try not to get too invested in an artist’s personal life because I think it can make it more difficult to be objective about the music etc, however I’m struggling with the same thing. Isbell’s family life and relationship with Amanda was a cornerstone of his story for years and supported in interviews/press around his records, and now in the wake of the divorce it all rings a little hollow. I suspect he’ll talk a bit more about it around this record, but we won’t see it til we see it. If you haven’t seen it, the Isbell documentary “Running with our Eyes Closed” on MAX is worth a watch. In hindsight, it was a preview of what was coming.

      @ I saw that. I’ve probably not missed anything of his since I found out who he was. My wife and adult daughter both came around when Reunions was released. They got me to following both he and Amanda on IG and he just doesn’t put up anything except concert dates while Amanda is obviously having a hard time. I mostly feel bad for Mercy. It’s usually hardest on bright kids and she is that.

      I’ll say as a songwriter, it’s really helpful to have someone pushing you to do more/be better at your craft. Sounds like that’s what they did for each other for a decade. There was an article a while back where Isbell basically said he wouldn’t have finished writing “The Nashville Sound” if Amanda hadn’t told him to get off the couch and write.

    It's a bit like saying a band "sold out." It's like, did you want them to be touring in a van at small gigs forever? No one can live very long that way. I don't think of Pearl Jam or Green Day or Dave Matthews Band as selling out. They've been very successful but still true to their roots if you look back or were with them from the start. Some artist choose to stay small time, but you can't blame them for their success, especially if they have the same values running through their music, or "until they became political." R.E.M., Green Day, Pearl Jam, DMB, Jason Isbell, and more have always been "political." A lot of different kinds of artists are. Doesn't make their art less than. 😊

    • @redmoonrecordings
      @redmoonrecordings 8 днів тому

      100% agree! I get that it’s fun being around for an artist’s early successes, but it drives me crazy when people complain about their favorite underground artist “making it” instead of rooting for them.

    7:52 how do you know it’s a low point for him personally? I’ve watched pretty much every interview with him there is (several times) and have never gotten that from him. If you’ve got a source I’d love to check it out. -Not to try and prove you wrong but because I’m generally interested in the man and the artist. Sound & Fury is my favorite album of his for sure. Though I’ve loved them all for 10+ years now. Thanks for the video partner.

    • @redmoonrecordings
      @redmoonrecordings Місяць тому

      Honestly, I appreciate you checking me on this, because Sturgill did so few interviews around the Sound & Fury album that it’s hard to get a clear picture. His early 2020 interview with Uproxx is the best source I could find for how he was feeling at the time, talking about how the record was a response to burnout and how his success affected him personally. He shares in the interview how he no longer connects with the “angry, bitter” person he was when he wrote the record, and how it took reconnecting with his family for him to finally be at peace again. It’s an interesting piece that gives a good picture into his mind and how he felt about the record and that point in his life once he had a little distance from it. Beyond that, the material on Sound & Fury points to a lot of Sturgill’s inner thoughts and trust issues during this period, which suggests that the pressure of his success was really getting to him.

    Something to look into is the SNL performance of Call to Arms and who the subject was at that moment in time vs his closing performance of Call to Arms in ACL 2024. He did it purposefully and the subject has stayed the same, but the shroud looks different. I believe that it was right after Dick Cheney announced who he was supporting as well.

    Love this. Sturgill is a real human being and what a human being does as they live their life is evolve. I love him because each album is a different life stage. But through it all he weaves in hard truths, optimism and encouragement to plant your feet on your path and walk it the best you can with as much love and kindness for everyone you meet and greet and cheat along the way because we do it all. His honesty in what an actual human being is, not the idealized version we all play like we are, is so refreshing and let's you look at yourself and others with more grace and love then I had before I listened to Sturgill. He also understands that not all humans are human beings (Sound and Fury) and there are predators out there and we need discernment. It's a hard industry to stay human in.

    I don’t think I can put words together to describe how excited I am for April now. I was legitimately 17 the last time I saw those 4 guys together on a stage. They are the reason I started writing songs myself and getting out to play. becoming friends with them over the last 14 years has been awesome, it makes my heart happy to know those guys don’t hate each other anymore
