    Did not realize the maple horns had such smooth sound across the entire range. Marvelous performance and performers, too; but the sound is startling at the top. Almost makes me want to start over as an oboist / Cor Anglais. Thank you.

    I am loving the increasing use of Maple for making English Horns - it adds such a warmth to the sound, and we're not wasting rare tropical trees to make them

    This would be REALLY interesting (and probably beneficial to your company) if you were to re-master this with an English spoke overlay, or enable verbal translation, which is a recent option on UA-cam. I studied German to O-level, but the technical nature of this video makes it hard to follow. I'm sure the English speaking rest of the world would be grateful. Please let me know if you can do this and I would be happy to share the video across my social media channels. 👍👍

    Bravo. Se gli Oboisti non si offendessero direi che Il Corno Inglese è il più bel strumento ad ancia . Suono vellutato, misterioso, sublime, nobile. Bravo ma brava anche la pianista che non ha azzannato la tastiera del Piano. BRAVO!

    Remarkable instrument - I wish you still made saxophones - I have two, a knackered tenor and an alto worthy of restoration.

    I struggle to realise I have stumbled upon this video!!! I have a Gebrüder Mönnig "Exquisito" alto saxophone and a Gebrüder Mönnig "Exquisito" tenor saxophone. Sadly the tenor is not worthy of restoration but the alto most certainly is :-)

    Nice performance! Very interesting variation of English horn. More like "alto oboe" instead of the traditional sound. I noticed a low Bb extension in the closeup. You would have to stand or sit in a high chair, or the bell would touch the floor? :-)

    “Ach du lieber, mein schatz”! What a GORGEOUS INSTRUMENT!!! Wonderful sound! Looks like the wood is a great favorite of mine - “CURLY MAPLE”!! My two most beautiful custom made black powder muzzle loading rifles are in Curly Maple. The .58 Hawken Curly Maple is moderate in curl. My .54 John Philip Beck flintlock is in “TIGER CURL”, or on the “WILD SIDE”! A “knockout”!!! The music Rixson Thomas played here was a very poor choice - NO REAL MELODY like the famous incredibly beautiful Wagner “Tristan und Isolde” English Horn solo! I also love how Jose Antonio Masmano plays too. I guess I’ll never really know what really makes the English Horn, or COR ANGLAIS, SOUND the way it does! That mello haunting sound pierces right into my heart - it’s ADDICTING!!!

    “Ach du Lieber, mein schatz”!!! Yust started to watch this video, BUT where are the “English captions”???! This video would mean so much more IF I could understand what is being said! Of course I’ll continue to watch. Solange! “Auf wiedersehen“ und Gesundheit”!

  • @mr.thickey3959

    WOW!!! “Ach du lieber, mein schatz”! What a fantastically mello & haunting sound! How can one not fall in love with it?! It’s “ADDICTING”! So many fine “Cor Anglais” players out there, but Rixon Thomas & Jose Antonio Masmano are probably my favorites, without listening to others in depth! I still need to know WHAT exactly makes this instrument SOUND the way it does! Is it the wood, the “bore” or it’s shape, it’s length, the curved neck??? I’m in love with this thing!!!

    The lady on piano is really feeling it. You can't help but love that rich sound truly lacking in the usual somber nasal quality. The Mönnig Bass Oboe is also made from maple. Would love to hear how it sounds as well.

      @@hansvonhochtann2739 Ich weiss nicht, deshalb ja meine ursprüngliche Frage. Der Oboenspieler spielt sehr schön elegant, beweglich, flexibel und mit schöner Tongebung - wäre wirklich interessant zu wissen wer das ist. Holliger ist es aber mit Sicherheit nicht - ich kenne alle seine Aufnahmen mit dem Marcello Konzert.

      @KFW Ja seine Spielweise ist schön. Ich spiele selber Oboe und es ist immer wieder schön so schöne Töne zu hören. Allerdings würde mich auch der Barockoboenbau interessieren. Davon gibt es jedoch gar kein Filmmaterial.

    Hi Rixon I'm currently at Frank and Meyer in Berlin trying cors. Am trying to decide between a maple wood cor and a Richard Wagner model. I feel the Richard Wagner cor has the edge but the maple wood is appealing in its own way. I believe you own both types of cor. Do you have a preference, or do you apportion different roles to each instrument accordingly? It would be great to have some feedback from you. James

    • @RoyalDanishOboes
      @RoyalDanishOboes 7 років тому

      Hi James, yes, I do play both the Wagner and Del Sol models. They're both magnificent. Personally I use the Maple wood Del Sol mostly as we play many long Operas. But I don't think I could do without the Wagner model either. I'll contact you directly to have a proper nerd discussion on the benefits of both models : )

    • @jamesoboe7826
      @jamesoboe7826 6 років тому

      Hi Rixon, I took away the Richard Wagner model for several weeks to try with my orchestra. I felt it had a rich tone, but found the lowest notes were almost too powerful. We play a fair bit of avant garde music at work, requiring really safe low note response in very quiet dynamics. With perseverance perhaps it would have got there. However, rather like you, I really wanted a maple wood model to help with long rehearsals when one really starts to feel the weight of one's instrument. Frank and Meyer were a wonderful and helpful team, during my visit to their shop in Berlin. I even had the pleasure of bumping into Clara Dent, while at the shop, who was trying one of their oboes. It's a small world at times. James

    Rixon Thomas is my absolute favorite English hornist. His tone and dynamic range are simply extraordinary! He could play a frying pan and make it sound gorgeous. Does anyone know if he uses a German / French / American scrape? The world is so lucky to have him. Now if only composers would get busy composing more for this wonderful instrument.
