Taken towards the end of the season. A female dungeness but besides that, only a few red rock crabs. No keepers today, but awesome footage of flounder, bullhead, and more. It really became attack of the bottomfish!

You used the right bait. Herring. But they will eat just about anything available in the Sound. Next time fillet them out, cover the fillets with cold fresh water. Then add one teaspoon of cider vinegar, per pound of fillets. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours in this solution. I prefer an overnight soak, but 4 hours is the minimum soak time. When ready to cook, drain the water/vinegar solution, and either run the fillets under cold tap water, or soak them again in cold tap water. Do this at least twice, dumping the cold water, then replacing it again. This'll remove any vinegar flavor from the fillets. Drain the fillets, or pat them down with paper towels. Dogfish can be cooked just about any way you please, but I like to prepare them with a home made batter and deep fry them like cod fillets. In fact, Dogfish compares very favorably with codfish. In the U.K. ,the Atlantic version of Dogfish have been prepared as fish 'n chips, since at LEAST WWII

In the U.K. Dogfish are marketed as 'rock salmon , huss, or flake'. Treated right, doesn't matter what you call them, they are worthy tablefare. Old Salt...

Not 'mud shark'. Spiny Dogfish. If you are going to target them, use steel leaders. Been catching and eating them since the 1960's, as incidental catch when targeting salmon on Puget's Sound. They chew right through monofilament, as you found out, so I always keep special Dogfish rigs aboard, when on the Sound, and if I'm trolling or mooching with cut plugs, I switch over to the steel leader rigs when the Dogfish show up. They are considered 'bottomfish' by WDFW, and count toward your bottomfish daily limit. And need'nt be concerned about sustainability. They are superabundant in certain locations, especially in the Summer months. Underutilized resource.
