I think Ariana has a better 5th octave head voice overall, and she goes straight to the note, but as they go higher Mariah really start to shine, her tone and control up there is really good, it's her league.

Butterfly just sounds like thinner raspy emotions to me. I know it's only 6 years, but to be fair her tone changed a lot in those years.

Not only does a song like this allow Mariah to take her time and dig in tone/timbre wise, but it will also keep up with her changing tone (clear, raspy, husky, breathy). It really is a masterpiece that would’ve complemented her vocal changes through the decades.
