    This video is about language bias not racism, so I find the title misleading. I am a white English-speaking person who moved to Stellenbosch over 20 years ago. Afrikaans was much more dominant when I moved here, and it was a challenge for me as a white English-speaking person. Many of the people who have lived here their whole lives speak Afrikaans as a first language and have had to adapt to the town's changing demographic. If you come here to study or work you should come prepared for the town's demographic. I am not saying there isn't any racism in Stellenbosch, but you have failed to demonstrate it.

    Hi thank you for your 5-month update, your videos are so informative! Is there a reason why you decided to go for microlocs over sisterlocs?

    • @Anyasatu
      @Anyasatu Рік тому

      Sure ☺️ so sisterlocs and Microlocs are the same. The only difference is that sisterlocs: 1. Are very uniform in size (they sometimes even measure the parting)and tend to be smaller than Microlocs 2. Not anyone can do sisterlocs, it is trademarked therefore they have a registry of certified sisterloc loctitians around the world who are qualified to do sisterlocs. 3. My Microlocs are slightly bigger because my hair is fine textured. So if I made them smaller, I was going to risk having locs that would fall off because as locs grow, they tend to get heavier and can break off by the root. But from far, the differences aren’t that distinct to tell them apart.

    • @PeeOrbital
      @PeeOrbital Рік тому

      @@Anyasatu Well that's perfectly fine but I'm not really getting your point. Is it that people should assume that you _cannot_ understand Afrikaans and therefore try to address you in English first? If I were to make such an assumption about you, I would feel quite condescending. In my home town in the Eastern Cape people of all backgrounds speak any number of languages, including Afrikaans, with abandon, and without any such issues attached - at least as far as I'm aware. Perhaps the message of what is being communicated is of greater importance than getting bogged down with the perceived baggage of the language. Frankly, I admire anyone who has bothered to learn as many as four to six languages. Sterkte.

    • @Anyasatu
      @Anyasatu Рік тому

      my point of this video is to make people aware that if they had to study in Stellenbosch, they should expect to be speaken to in Afrikaans even if they don't understand the language. It seems that there is an assumption that everyone can speak Afrikaans which is unfair bc there are so many nationalities that exist in this country. I have received a doctor's report that was written in Afrikaans. I couldn't read it. I was spoken to in Afrikaans numerous times even though I had expressed that I don't fully understand. This was my experience and my reality of it.

    Afrikaans is an inherently important cultural part of Cape Town, you should have learned about the history of this part of SA. Afrikaans is also spoken by the koi, San and namas people its their language and part of their culture. I think its very arrogant to think English is superior, you should actually take the time to learn Afrikaans especially if you going to study in CT or stellenbosch. Try to remember that the Dutch have been in CT and in particular stellenbosch since 1652 long before your ancestors decided to adopt English and move to this part of the country. Stop wining about racism blacks have complet political and security control of the country. Be grateful you have the opportunity and make something of yourself. Again show respect learn Afrikaans and you will see how they respect you!

    • @Anyasatu
      @Anyasatu Рік тому

      Mfondini, your comment proves the ignorance and blindness to the issues we have in this country. Afrikaans IS AS important as the other 11 official languages in South Africa. If you were also aware, you would know that the Western Cape is more diverse in ethnicity - there are a lot of foreigners on this land which means that you need to be ACOMMODATIVE to the diversity. We are a rainbow nation country (which you should know by the way) - so using your logic, I can also speak to you in Xhosa and expect you to understand☺️. My ancestors were on this land way before the white people came to this land. Please go and do your research, learn isiXhosa and stop being narrow-minded.

    • @gerard377
      @gerard377 Рік тому

      @@Anyasatu Your reply in fact proves your ignorance if not your arrogance! Yes Afrikaans is as important as the other 11 languages in our country however Afrikaans has traditionally been spoken in CT, there are a lot of Arab foreigners in France, mostly from Algeria where they also speak French and Arabic should they now all speak Arabic when in France? Learning another SA language (AFRIKAANS) in fact will diversify your mind rather than you trying a debate on diversity with a flawed logic 😊 If I studied in a part of SA where one of the other 11 languages is predominantly spoken, then I would definitely make the effort to learn the language during my degree course why not?! Unless your ancestors are either San, koi or Nama then they definitely where not in CT before the first European settlement and that's just an anthropological, archaeological and historical fact sister! The San and koi and Cape Malay in fact developed Afrikaans in point in fact. I think you just biased against the Afrikaaners who you think are all white. Maybe the racism is about you?

    • @Anyasatu
      @Anyasatu Рік тому

      Xhosa Is traditionally spoken in CT too. So you should also know Xhosa. I partially understand Afrikaans. I doubt that you are able to construct a sentence in Xhosa.

    • @gerard377
      @gerard377 Рік тому

      Correct, however, Afrikaans as a language is predominant by population or the amount of people that speak it in CT and given the history of the language since the late 1600's well its a no brainer sister, just learn the language and if you can speak it then practice it more by speaking it 😊 true I can't speak Xhosa but I do speak English, Afrikaans, Hebrew and French and I doubt you can string a sentence either in Hebrew or French. Be humble sister and enjoy your studies in CT and enjoy Afrikaans as a language.
