Lessons For Leaders With Notre Dame’s Jack Swarbrick & GWU’s Andrew Goodrich
0Notre Dame Vice President and James E. Rohr Director of Athletics Jack Swarbrick sits down with Gardner-Webb Vice President and Director of Athletics Andrew Goodrich at the 2023 NCAA Convention to share the leadership lessons he’s learned from 15 years in the big chair for new and aspiring ADs. Swarbrick reflects on the coaches, educators and early experiences of responsibility that shaped him, discusses his best practices for hiring coaches and selecting “highly motivated and highly talented” team members, talks about the importance of mental downtime and leaving space for the unexpected and recommends one book aspiring leaders must read.
The conversation is indexed below for efficient viewing (click the time stamp to jump to a specific question/topic).
00:00 - Introduction
02:08 - Is there a story from your childhood or early in your career that shaped you and influenced your leadership style today?
03:09 - Did you feel pressure to instill your own philosophy or values on the department when you first took the chair in 2008?
04:37 - How do you balance having a fun work environment with holding teams and individuals responsible for their attitude, efforts and results?
05:54 - What are your best practices for coaching searches? How do you keep it private and how do you evaluate potential coaching candidates?
08:20 - How do you incorporate student-athletes in that process?
09:41 - What was one moment or experience that you had that was especially challenging? What helped you win that day or that moment?
13:14 - What books or podcasts would you recommend for new and aspiring ADs?
16:14 - Success isn't always about what you do - it's sometimes about what you don't do. Are there frequently-made mistakes that ADs make that we should look out for if and when we have the chance to take over an athletic department?
18:33 - How has faith played a role in your leadership philosophy?

She has had great success. It's important to remember that some of her Olympic success was with Geno. Many were disappointed with her loss in the Big Dance this year, but she wasn't alone. So did Stanford, UConn, VT and others. She is one of the best coaches working today.

So schools throughout the country including the SEC pay recruits to become student athletes with NIL/ collectives but Gene Smith isn't willing to do the same to bring in top talent into the football program, Why not??? He talked briefly about the collectives but not why he has a issue with collectives in inducement... that NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED PUBLICLY! PERIOD.

Regarding the "piers" The videos and pic of Snapdragon I've seen showing the "piers" look more like platforms. If I had a say I would of made them look more like a pier. The pillars could of been made to look like wooden post / legs like the PB pier and others for starters along with other small real pier features like pier like railing and other stuff like maybe a small concession stand near it called something like bait shop. Pier / bait shop ... get it. My advise is free of charge to SDSU.

16:15 - "not much turnover" - that is a blessing that no assistant coach has left or got other higher positions at another college. My Villanova men's team, other teams have picked apart our coaching staff over the years and I hate it because I loved that they were apart of the staff. They got hired as head coaches at other colleges. They were so good and I worry every time someone leaves that the team wouldn't be as good, but they still are good and I'm glad.

UMMMM as of today 4-3-22 you might want to reach out to Coach Staley again and see why her and her team thinks it best to diss Americas national anthem ! Fox news online has a huge article of hating on America behavior by her and her team ! Coach Staley when questioned said they are protesting "racial discrimination " ! And that was it ! Sorry but it makes zero sense to hate on America ! There are discrimination laws and team has access to the media almost 24 hours a day and other channels they can use to air grievance's ! Guess I will have to root against this team after all !
