We are a family of five who sold it all to see the world. We hit the road in 2019, touring the fifty states in our RV. When are you heading back to the boat. Shouldn’t you be in the Bahamas by now?
We will head to Charleston in the first week of January and plan to be in Panama by mid-February.
Let us know if you have any other questions for us. We'll make sure to answer them in a future video! :)
Would you recommend a outremer 45 for a sailing couple with no kids? Anything specific you’d add to the build if you could from standard?
Without a doubt, I would, and if it fits the budget, I'd recommend the new 42. Outremer has been fantastic to work with when minor issues arose. The 45 is an incredible, ideal boat for a couple.
@ 52 would allow more toys to be added to the journey that’s forsure. We plan to go to the shipyard next year to meet the team. We are flying back to states now and catching up on all your videos since you set out to the Bahamas. Just watched the 42nd birthday video. So happy belated birthday to you. :)
Your on what we call the Zetara level of cruising. Most of us could never realistically sustain that level of cost. We sail on a lot smaller budget and our boat cost a lot less. I agree what ever your budget double it. I hate the what does it cost question because it different for everyone and every budget.
I'm curious, what would you estimate as the yearly budget? It's a tricky question to answer since everyone’s circumstances are so different.
@ we have friends that travel on $24k year. We did that for the first year after spending $80k on our boat and about $60k on a refit including a new dingy and outboard which was 4 years ago. We only haul out if we have to but our haul outs are between $500-$1000 depending on the yard. This year we have to replace our water maker (5k) and next year we are hauling out to repaint the bottom and I want to do some engine work so next years budget will be a little higher but we are also learning to do a lot of the work ourselves as marine rates are way to expensive. But we also live full time on our boat. there isn’t a house in another state to go back to so we don’t put our boat on the hard. Our engine doesn’t use a lot of fuel when motoring and we try and sail everywhere. Our insurance for the states and the Bahamas is only $3000. But we want to go further eventually so we are preparing for that and the survey that they will want.
Last night, I spoke with friends on another boat who also have kids, and they're experiencing similar challenges. They mentioned that whatever you estimate for the budget, best to double it, as it tends to cost more than expected. 😅 We should, and could, tackle more work on our boats ourselves to save a significant amount of money.
First! Thanks for taking the time the time to answer some of these questions. I was a little surprised by the annual cost but you are traveling with your whole family. If it were just you and your wife, what would you estimate cost would be, 1/2?
You are so welcome!
Fake
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
GreAt music and always great videos.
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
"if i got pass by someone ellse,i need to buy that boat" :))🤩💪🤜👏
Great video, but glad my wife is a nurse. Let’s hope she can talk me through anything I need to do!
Always good to learn! Thanks for watching 😊
Oh My Gosh Matt. The overalls 😂😂😂
😊 I'm planning to auction off the ones I'm wearing. What will your starting bid be?
Ah that explains why you clocked so many miles
Atheist living in Europe here. I do like your choice of boat though.
It's hard to have such good judgment on a boat and be an atheist at the same time!😊 Thanks for hanging out with us!
@@flandersfamilytoday It's all about science (physics) and engineering. 😊Thanks for sharing what it's like to own an Outremer 5X.
@@angela1984a😅 oh come on and a little bit of faith!! Outremer definitely has done it right, pretty incredible company.
Rocking the overalls 👊 If people sail far south to end in Grenada we would recommend stopping in Pirate's Bay, Tobago. Small fisherman's village with very few cruisers. Feels like what the Caribbean might have been 20-30 years ago. Hoping we get to cross path again this season. On our side we will chill in the Caribbean. 👋
First, bold wardrobe choice. Not everyone can pull off those overalls! Second, Galapagos is at the top of my bucket list. Third, loved the church visits! Makes me excited to travel the world and visit different wards and branches! Great video and I appreciate the time you take to edit them, they are super engaging. I just don’t know how I’m supposed to make it the next 5 years before I can do it full time myself! If you had a 5 year time line before you were sailing full time, what would you be focusing on at this point? (outside of getting finances in order)
I think the 5x is the perfect amount of boat vs comfort. To the point where the performance adds to the comfort and safety margin underway. If you ever get to do a video on a normal cat, I would be very intersted in your remarks. We all know the comfort is amazing, home like even. But how bad is it at sea? I would love to see you with a half furled genoa going upwind. I think you would be shocked.
I've only sailed my Hobie Cat since getting our boat, and I must say, there's really no comparison out there. The 5X is perfect in so many ways! But if you're looking for the next best thing, I'd recommend the 55. While you might not get the same performance, it offers great comfort along with impressive performance. Truly a joy to sail! ⛵️
@@flandersfamilytoday Yes the 55 and 52 are amazing boats. Yet the 5x is more boat and I like that. I also like the aluminium monohuls by KM yachts like bestevaer. Perfect for the North. Choices. Anyway, take a gopro and have sail on a production cat for 3 hours. I would watch that for sure
Was the boat set up on 220v or 110v? I’ve heard one issue with buying in Croatia is the electrical can be problematic for Americans.
Thanks so much for following us! We really appreciate it. Our boat runs on 220v. Initially, we considered switching it, but after about a year, we just got used to it. Plenty of Americans have 220v boats, too!
Just followed you guys and you seem like such a genuine and nice family. I’m hoping to retire in 5 years and get a sailboat and live your content! Also, how difficult do you find it getting to church each week?
Thank you so much for watching and hanging out with us! We appreciate your kind words. Attending church has been a huge priority for us; apart from the Bahamas, it’s actually been quite easy to do and truly the best part of our travels. Feel free to reach out to us on Instagram if you have any questions. We're happy to help!
As a sailing racer, If someone I don’t know comes asking to borrow my boat, that a no.
There's a big difference between sailors and racers. We've found the sailing community to be incredibly welcoming and generous. Many people own boats that just sit idle, and they'd be thrilled to have someone clean them up and use them. It's all about connecting with the right people. What kind of boat are you racing, and where at? I wish so bad we got into racing before we started sailing around the world.
@@flandersfamilytoday I race on the solent in different boats, but we have an rs800. if you want to get into racing, I would recommend convincing a friend to let you on during a race and as you learn do more. its a constant learning process, I have been racing since I was 8, still learning heaps
How many hours/miles do you have now ?
I’m not 100% positive but somewhere right around 15,000. 🙃 crazy to think it’s been that many.
@@flandersfamilytoday 15,000 nautical miles , wow that’s like double what we have done in 3 years sailing back and forth for NC to florida to Bahamas
Great tips for anyone looking to get into sailing or cruising! Happy sailing guys!
Thanks so much!😊
Great video with great info. You are the best!
Your to kind! Thanks for hanging out with us.
Spinsheet used to do a crew list for people available to crew. Racing is a great way to start.
Certainly! It's incredible how accessible boating is. For someone like me from Utah, it seemed impossible, but now in the sailing world, I see how simple it really is.
Love what you're doing! Hope to be out on the ocean repping Utah one day too. West Coast Multihulls in San Diego do ASA instruction and charters in California and Mexico, highly recommend.
Thanks for the recommendation and thanks for watching! 😄
Annual insurance is 10 % of the boat value? Also 100k on a million dollar boat?
10% of value?! That’s outrageous, essentially they are hedging that you will total your boat within a decade? Do you know how those rates would compare for buyers with more offshore and passage making experience?
@@jaysonbowerman115 😂 You're absolutely right, we pay around 1.3% of our boat's value. I meant to say that you should expect to spend about 10% of the boat's value annually for basic upkeep. My mistake!
@@flandersfamilytoday- Hahaa! Yeah, that’s way more in-line with everything I’ve heard from other sources. It’ll be an interesting question how much rates will go up after this season though….at what point will it become almost impossible to insure a home in Florida?
Always nice to see your videos. I hope we meet again soon on the water. We will be going to Panama.
@@jaysonbowerman115 mine went up from about 22,000 to 30,000. We renew here in a couple of weeks.
Mistake @ 6:02 - I meant to say that you should expect to spend about 10% of the boat's value annually for basic upkeep. We pay somewhere around 1.3% of our boat's value for insurance! We hope you find this video helpful. If you'd like us to go in depth on any topic let us know - we'd love to hear from you! :)
Tell me how a certain sail can make you go faster than the wind
That’s not a question for me, my jaw drops every time, it’s pretty amazing! I think more than anything it’s the actual vessel that can make that happen rather than the sails.
Are you getting north sails to repair them ? We had our spinnaker repaired by them and they was so much cheaper than anyone else. The after sales support is amazing
Yes, we had North Sails take care of everything. There after sales is incredible.
@@flandersfamilytoday we are thinking about new sails next season. I won’t consider anyone else because of the after sales
Great info! Please post other things you thought you needed but really didn’t 😊
I've been pondering your comment, and so far, only the icemaker comes to mind. I'll keep giving it some thought. Thank you so much for joining us on our journey!
Stop producing even more dogs into the world, please! I know your dog is adorable but there are millions of homeless dogs around the world. Give them a chance instead!❤
Hi, I think that ruby getting a puppy is so cool, one time when me and her where on a trip she told me about how much she wanted a dog.
We are dog lovers and we have had dogs right up till we came on the boat. Personally I wouldn’t have a dog or a cat on a boat. We had a cat for a while and he couldn’t adjust, once we found him a new home he was way happier. For dogs , I used to train pointers and have a dog in my life since I was 7. It’s a lot of work 3 times a day you have to go ashore no matter what the weather. We have buddy boated with people who have had dogs and they have also said that they wouldn’t do it again and wouldn’t get another. But that’s our choice , if it works for you and the animal that’s awesome !
Totally agree, we’ve met so many happy dogs on boats, but I think for me and my house we just can’t make it happen.
Hi, I am watching your videos. Honestly speaking your video quality is really good but your video SEO optimization is very poor. For this reason you have not got proper engagement 1. SEO Score is 46.5 out of 100. 2. Description too short - Don't use SEO friendly video tags, Channel tags and title 3. Videos have not been Shared on Social Media Platform 4. Don't add End Screen You should add proper video tags, Rank tags, Channel tags, SEO friendly title, SEO friendly description for getting better engagement.
Thank you tons for your feedback!

It could be worse… Floating container🫣 I’ve been haunted by that story.
Thank you for your inspirational message about cell phones. We’re at that stage where we are working towards our goal and day dreaming a lot on UA-cam.
That’s awesome! Set a goal and make it happen. Thanks for hanging out with us!
I love following your adventures. So true on your advice. Seems like there is this trend to sell everything and buy a boat. That carpe diem attitude sounds great, but what do you do when you get older and need to return to land life and have nothing to your name but a depreciating boat? I had a meeting with my accountant and financial advisor last week. I’m about 2 years out Before I can leave hard work behind and play. Then I will Need to buy your boat. Keep it clean for me.
To sum it up, there's no easy path to success. We've been fortunate to reach this point after 15 years of hard work. Some people sell everything and live their best lives without any assets, but that seems too stressful for me. Keep following your dreams!
😂😂👍
🤔 KIDS they are also awesome.
