No weeps? An ounce of prevention. Everything is top notch.
There is a perforate pipe behind the wall and an outlet drain at the lowest point. On this particular wall it's on the left side. It occurs at the 10:40 mark. Thanks for watching!!
@@rolling_hills_landscapes gotcha. I missed that.
Hi, what was it chiefly designed for? Can it be used to simply find level such as a level deck or foundation? Thank you
It would be a great tool to check level on a deck or foundation. The beauty of the zip level is you don't need a direct line of sight like you would with a typical rotary construction laser or transit. I don't know exactly what it was originally designed for, but it replaces a very cumbersome water level (clear tubing filled with water) for architects and engineers and estimators. I hope this helps! If not reach back out, thanks!
Hi, thank you for getting back to me. Is there any difference between a zip level and a smart one do you know?@rolling_hills_landscapes
@@danthechippie4439 The Zip Level has to be factory calibrated every 3 years. The Smart level doesn't. Also if you tear the line of the Zip level it needs to be sent back to the factory. The Smart Level is designed to be fixed in the field. We only own a Zip Level and love it, but we have not tried the Smart Level. Something else to consider is Moasure. It is cheaper than both and does some really cool things like mapping but takes longer to do measurements. We recently purchased it and Amanda uses the zip level and the Moasure. Hope this helps! If you need any more clarity or would like to see a video on it, let us know. Thanks!
Hi. I'd love to see a video on it, thank you
@@danthechippie4439 We'll have to give it a try!
Good work
Thank you!!
Extra time worked
If we charged by the hour on this job, I could retire.
Tommy running down the side and appearing on the other was great!!
new subscriber…what is the white stuff?
Welcome aboard!! It is Masons Lime. You could also use type S mortar. The purpose is to dry out wet soils as well as increase the bearing capacity.
@@rolling_hills_landscapes ah….thanx!

Looking good there, John!
Thanks! Great to hear from you and I hope you all are doing wonderful!!
lol there is an other heidelberg in the states as well
Where is it located? I'm only familiar with the one outside of Pittsburgh, PA.
@rolling_hills_landscapes Heidelberg is in germany
@@bigbud4729 That one I was aware of. I thought you mentioned there was a second Heidelberg in the states and I couldn't find it. I'm now thinking that you were referring to Germany in the first place.
I don't see a license plate on that motor vehicle...unregistered, uninspected, no insurance card...Sometimes lots of summonses are written to operators of construction equipment/forklifts when they leave the jobsite/warehouse and drive on the road. Even know of a backhoe operator who got himself arrested for DWI..driving it on the road.
In this instance the street was a part of the job site and it was the only location where the machine was on the street. What do you recommend?
@@rolling_hills_landscapes Register the vehicle.
@@rolling_hills_landscapes Or you you could trailer the vehicle to the site instead of driving it to the site. The street is part of the jobsite but not the part of the street you were dtiving the vehicle. That part is the problem. Having the vehicle in use while at a site which happens to be a road is different to driving it to that site. What if you were in an accident while driving to the site? Are you going to claim that the other vehicle was on your construction site while they were driving on the road legally? Ask your insurance rep. If he says you're good go for it & risk the summonses. Or ask a state trooper (or a layer) if I am correct. Better to know before rather than later.
@@shoofly529 We're all for covering our bases. This was a machine that we rented from our local Bobcat dealer who holds a certificate of insurance from our agent. They did drop it off at the job site and it was only on the street for that purpose. We have a full time lapse of the wall construction on our page that might help with context.
@@shoofly529 It's not ours, it was a rental.
Oh, super. This is what I wanted to see. The first camera position was not showing the details this nicely. Another beautiful job completed. 😻
It was a tough job to get a good camera angle for sure. Glad to have you back!
what's coming? a tsunami?
Not far from it! We actually received a rainfall that day that smashed our old Pittsburgh total. It was a mess!
Probably don’t put the caption behind the UI next time 👍🏿
I prefer using a chisel but this looks pretty good!
Thanks! I would love to see how it's done with a chisel!
Looks very nice I’m sure the home owner thinks the same. Good job.
Thank you! Yes they loved it!
Unfortunately the video doesn't show the most important bit that most people skimp on, the preparation before laying the pavers.
Couldn't agree more!! This was all of the footage we had for this particular project. We have a full line of Time Lapse videos that are unedited to show all of the work we put into the excavation and mainly base compaction. We are just starting out with UA-cam and hope to provide some interesting and informative videos! I hope you'll check us out in the future!
Nice work! Would’ve been nice to see how the transition from driveway to garage was handled for water runoff if the bricks raise the height higher.
Thanks! That's a good point. We had limited footage of this particular project so I couldn't get very in depth. It was one of my favorites though!

You need snow tracks, they are a thinner softer rubber, the tracks you have here are hard and a large flat pad for better wear in dirt and rock. You can also buy snow studs that just screw into the track pads. Try that and you will throw rocks at your wheels 👍
That would for sure work! We don't plow anymore so it's not worth it for us. I was just cleaning my street since the city forgets about us.
Looks like a,, rookie operator,,dont know what there do,n In Snow!!!!!
Either that or 2,000 hours experience 😂
We have a wheeled skidsteer that we use to push sniw with on top of wverything else it does. Super fun but not the best tool for the job, when we mix compost the polymer from the solids gets wet and slippery and its even harder to keep traction than ice. You can slip and slide around on a dry summer day just from having that shit on your tires
What would you recommend as the best tool for the job? What do the polymers do? I have never tried mixing compost.
@@rolling_hills_landscapes for us a snow plow would be better. Ours is primarily used for mixing. We take sludge from treated waste water and we press the liquids out. It almost looks like crushed brownies if its dry enough. In order to keep the solids seperate from the water. We use a liquid polymer that holds everything together. When we mix our solids with woodash it makes grade A compost. But since its not completely dry it will seep out moisture while its in our drying beds (theyre at an angle so water collects imadvertanetly). When we go to mix the woodash and compost sometimes you can get sucked in and since the polymer is sooo slippery you just end up spinning. Weve looked into tracks but to clean and maintain them would be way more work for us.
@@coolergappney1943 Thanks for that thorough explaination! Is this POC (Processed Organic Compost)? We used to use that for top dressing our new lawn installations and it was magnificient. Way better than mushroom manure! However not a fan when we were spreading it and the wind would blow it back into my face 🤢. Can't find anyone that sells it around Pittsburgh anymore.
Rubber tracks on ice. You need grousers.
Have you tried them? We had metal over the tire tracks and I hated them, mostly because they kept getting hung up on the boom arms when going in reverse.
@@rolling_hills_landscapes I'm thinking of two things. Studs on snowmobile tracks and grousers on dozer tracks. Years ago my dad had grousers welded to his dozer tracks to eliminate slipping sideways in snow and ice. He was a logger.
@@justsittinhere72 If there's no concern with marking up the paved surface, studs are amazing! They cut through ice like nothing else. I would just be careful that if someone is plowing a shopping center they could end up getting in trouble for leaving stud marks, especially where the machine is turning. I'm sure your dad could come up with some pretty cool stuff!
@@rolling_hills_landscapes Wasn't thinking about paved surfaces. I would never use them there. I was thinking about up in the hills.
Should I sell my idea to Phil Bahler? I'm thinking the Quick-E-Picket!
Did you enjoy the video? We had a unique setup on this job where the rear facing dash camera captured most of the excavation and wanted to share it!
Why
To keep your base from migrating into your subsoil. It helps bridge weak spots in the soil as well.
A great crew and a great boss, what makes a winning team. Thumbs up for Angelo and thumbs up for sharing this video.
The biggest business struggle I face is self promotion. It makes me feel uneasy to even post a video like this, but I now realize that this is what we need to do to grow our business so we can help more people! Thank you for your continued support! -John
As long as they don't watch out for me.

You guys do great work
Thank you! It's always nice when industry people recognize the effort put in to the job!
My goodness this is just coming out beyond fantastic. This is also the first time I can get a better glimpse of the beautiful wall section. And those pavers show even better from this camera angle. Seeing your work, I find myself inspired and fancying to have built something similar for my property (which could definitely benefit from it). But with over 2500 miles away, I guess I am a bit outside your service area.
Have truck, will travel haha! Thank you so much for your kind words and for your continued support, it is very motivational!
This is coming out not only beautiful, it might even outlast the Pyramids of Giza. Wonderful work!
Ha ha! That's the plan--make our projects outlast us. Thanks for noticing the detail and effort that goes into our projects.
Fantastic build. How did you guys finish out the upper part of that landscape?
Thanks so much! Sorry, we didn't include that part. We'll have to get an image of the finished product. After the fabric was laid on top of the backfill/drainage stone behind the wall, we brought in new topsoil and graded to match the existing slope.
The love and dedication to your craft really shows. It is rare to see work that is performed with this much attention to detail. Your other videos show how straight and pretty this wall is. I hope you can take some time showing how beautiful it has become in the end (I find many similar type videos on UA-cam end up rather short presenting their end result).
Thank you so much! So glad that it shines through as we strive to build walls that outlast us. We've been posting the full videos start to finish, but haven't thought about a final walk through and description of our finished work. Might have to get started on that!
There seems to be now mortar. So how are the stones held together, to be strong enough to hold the lateral pressure? Or is the fill behind the stones concrete? Probably my fault, but I can't really see if from the video.
You are correct-there is no mortar! Segmental retaining walls (SRWs) like Versa Lok do not need mortar. Versa Lok specifically has pins that help to hold courses together. Immediately behind the wall is #57 limestone for drainage and then the remaining fill is 2A limestone. Every 3-4 courses of block has a layer of geogrid for reinforcement--this is for walls that have a surcharge (holding vehicular traffic, steep slope, or just taller than what the block can withstand without reinforcement). The stone behind the wall need to be compacted every 6", so with that time to compact, the amount of stone and the grid layers, this process is time consuming, but necessary for a wall like this. Appreciate your curiosity!
@@rolling_hills_landscapes Many thanks for your patience and your great explanation. This is a very interesting process for me. I will definitely follow. (I am just a home owner, but love watching and learning this sort of stuff)

Looks good linder
whats the name of the blocks used please
Versa-Lok www.versa-lok.com/ The actual manufacturer was R.I. Lampus near Pittsburgh, Pa.
I hate putting in the stones cause you level it one way and leveling it. That way throws off the back-and-forth level and once you fix that level, the side to side is off. And if you don’t have it level by the time you get to the correct height and you hammer it down too much, you have to pick it up throw some rocks under it and start all over. I hate it.
Definitely the most frustrating point of the project! When dealing with a particularly frustrating block, sometimes a quick trip to the water cooler and back seems to help for some reason.
Looking to buy a E42 do u recommend it for the money?
Absolutely! We used an E35 for many years and only rented larger machines when the job called for it and I can't believe the power difference between an E35 and a E42. The reach is way more. This is just a rental, but I will strongly consider E42 when we purchase.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Ya, be careful you don't dig up Ivan Ooz
Certainly hope not!
I feel like it took a while.
There was 30,000 sq. ft. of pavers laid in only one week. This simply couldn't be done by hand.
Man I wasted two summers putting my paver patios down (most of that time was earth moving and fixing the drainage).
Earth moving by hand is a tough endeavor.
wow, put em out of work...I can see why the boss purchased it, I gotta go to the truck to get my tape.
This was just a demo. We are a bit away from getting one of these just yet.
You do know the difference between a grinder and a cutting wheel right
Good point! There is a difference for sure!
