Day 39 | Poor Planning | Arizona Trail 2024 SOBO Thru Hike
Переглядів 6647 годин тому
November 26. I took some time to check out the facilities around Manning Camp in the daylight. I probably spent more time talking wth hikers today than any other day on trail, including one person who’d passed us back in the Mazatzals. Once I was back to hiking, it was time to figure out how to deal with the logistics challenge of getting to Colossal Cave, where my next pair of shoes was waiting.

November 25. It was a relatively late start out of Molino Basin Campground and I immediately lost another 45 minutes taking pictures of flowers along the wrong trail. After that it was relatively social day, with lots of other hikers (3) on the trail. I abandoned my plans of camping at the park boundary, due to a lack of suitable campsites and pushed on to Manning Camp. Thankfully the comments ...

November 24. This was the big downhill day from Mount Lemmon to Molino Basin Campground. Plenty of incredible terrain which feels unique to this section of trail. There was just enough cloud cover to make the hiking comfortable. I took a short detour to Hutch’s Pool.

November 23. The plan was an early start to maximize time at Mount Lemmon. The climb was steeper than I remembered, and by the time I reached the top I’d decided to book a cabin at Mount Lemmon hotel which is not cheap and a bit of a process if you are trying to do it at the last minute, but absolutely worth it if you are able to take advantage. The cabins are fantastic and incredibly convenien...

November 22. We remembered the section between Kearny and Oracle from last spring as beautiful but without much variation and this time of year it was dry, dusty, and with almost no shade. I found myself dreaming of hitching into Oracle for a Dr. Pepper. As it turned out, I was dropped off near the great Mexican place we’d discovered in the spring. It was a very welcome break! Three huge glasse...

November 21. This was a day of mostly easy hiking, desert views, jumping cholla, and bees... everywhere bees! Nowhere to sit and relax without relentless buzzing. An unexpected touch of trail magic brightened the day.

November 20. Easy start to the day after a quiet zero in Kearny. Perfect weather to start this section to Mount Lemmon. There was one mini-adventure when I missed an intersection off the power line road and ended up walking an extra .6 or .8 miles. I decided to bushwhack back to the trail which (as usual) ended up not being a timesaver. Ended the day early when I passed a fantastic campsite and...

November 18 and 19. It was a “snooze the alarm” kind of morning after the coyotes kept me up, especially once I decided that I would probably zero in Kearny. Along the way I saw a bunch of “longhorn” cattle and could see a passing train. The picnic table by the water spigot is a welcome addition from when we were here in the spring. Dr. Pizza (if you know you know) was out of town but I lucked ...

November 17. This was a "thinking about water" kind of day as the sources were more unpredictable than usual, though it all worked out. It's also one of the most incredible sections of trail with 360 degree views for much of the day. It is interesting to hike it in the other direction, as we'd hiked this section NOBO last spring (links below). I only saw a few trail users of the human variety, ...

November 16. Slept in this morning. This was the most social hiking day so far, as the trail passed through a popular backpacking area. There was plenty of water with a few unique setups, but it looks like there's a long water carry coming up at the end of the day.

November 14. We had set the alarm for 4am and woke to howling coyotes. We were hiking by 5am again under fading stars followed by spectacular sunrise colours. We stopped to chat with fellow AZT hiker Wizard by Webber Creek TH before entering the burn zone from the recent West Fire. This portion of trail had only recently reopened and it is clear how much work went into making that happen! There...

November 13. We left our rental car at Pine TH and got a shuttle back north to make up the section we’d skipped on the way down. No one had signed the log book in a few days. The snow had melted and it was a sunny morning. There was a lot of open forest and quasi-road walking which made for easy miles for much of the day. We saw a few groups of elk, but didn’t capture them on camera. We didn’t ...

November 10-12. Today’s destination is Roosevelt Lake where Maple was planning to finish her section. We started the morning early (which is becoming a habit on “town” days) and were rewarded with the absolute best sunrise views of the trip and trail magic in the form of cold drinks at Mills Ridge Trailhead courtesy of Trail Angels Scott & Becky. Pistol Hill, I ride my Mt. Bike out there
@@JodyM2 That was a very cool section of the trail.
Looks like another beautiful camp site and much better water here. How did you enjoy doing this entire trail in the fall? Would you suggest a fall or spring season to do the AZT if you had the chance to do it again?
@@ColbyontheTrail I really enjoyed the entire trail, but… suggesting a direction is pretty subjective and complicated. I may try making a video about my opinions on that. What I can say for sure is, if I had the flexibility to start in the spring or fall I would absolutely choose the spring! From what I’ve been told a lot of trail clearing happens in the winter so the trail was far more overgrown in the fall. I don’t think I experienced any pricklies on the trail itself during the spring. There is much less daylight in the fall compared to the spring and the days are getting shorter instead of longer as you hike. There are a few other things but they may have been influenced by my personal hike rather than seasonal norms. If I could only hike the trail in the fall I would still hike it, the trail is incredible.
@@shufflinansufferin I'd love to hear a video about your thoughts on NOBO vs SOBO. But obviously doing the trail is amazing in and of itself. On my bucket list for sure!
I just found your channel this morning and have been enjoying your AZT series so far! Back in August, some friends and I cycled from Jacob Lake to the North Rim CG and stayed in the same spot you camped at. Unfortunately I came down with COVID on day 3 of our trip and had to hitch a ride back to Jacob Lake and wait for my friends. Still, it's awfully nice to see some familiar views! I hope to do some more AZT section hiking and/or riding this year, so your series will help with some inspiration. 🙂
@@paddyredbeard Thanks! That’s a miserable way to end a trip. Hopefully you get to complete your sections.
Did you use microspikes at some point on this trail?
@@sj1684 Nope… but we had to skip past Mica on this section hike because it was hit with two back to back snowstorms as we were approaching. Depending on your start date you might want them for Miller on day one or two.
Great videos and congrats on your wonderful adventure!!! Planning 2start first week of March 2025 :)
@@sj1684 Thanks, it’s been a blast. Have a great trip, it’s an amazing trail.
That water looks NASTY! Here's to hoping you had some better water in the future.
I believe this was the second worst water of the trip for me. At Twin Tanks I mixed in gatorade powder and it tasted like purple manure.
@@shufflinansufferin Woof, purple manure...hopefully the rest of the trail has been kind. Looking forward to seeing more!
I noticed your packs are new how do you like them compared to the HMG? I have had my HMG for 2 years now and I am looking at the Kakwa thinking maybe it would be better for heavier water carries. Your channel is now one of my favorites for preparing for my trip to AZ next March.
Thanks! I've used a HMG for 7 or 8 years and switched to the Durston this spring. I definitely prefer the Durston. My only issue with it is the mesh pocket is very small and has taken some getting used to.
Wish we had trails like this in AUS 😮
I know the feeling... Wish we had trails like this in Canada.
Awesome 🙌
Great reception at the saddle
Rocks for 3 miles ahead
Warn winter is good but so cold is scary. 🥹🥹🥹
I was just at mount Lemmon this weekend. Beautiful place.
It's an incredible section of trail!
Lots of ankle benders on the trail. Skip the big cookie. Jacob lake has the best cookies
I’ve been to both places and didn’t have a cookie at either one… on the list for next time!
Welcome to Oracle!! Yes, we are having a warm winter. Sorry!
The heat made my ice cold horchata that much better!
Not sponsored by Dr Pepper. 😂
I'm trying...
Get Mexican food. Good food there in Oracle
I think we ate there 2 or 3 times in the spring...
I left my tramily in the mad-as-hell mountains. Wanting to go faster and farther. Miss those peeps.
What a day hiking into Roosevelt lake. Very warm and I was just wanting to get there. Frustrated and tired that day I came across a Gila monster and it was all worth it again.
If you just sit very still right before dusk in that area you'll get a decent picture of a rabbit/hare whatever they are. Think I have a couple from this last springtime.
Love you Gary
Not looking forward to the Gila River section again.
That campsite and sunset are stunning. This has been a fun series to watch!
Thanks! That ended up being a fantastic campsite.
Watch out for 💩 about thirty yards to the right of your camp.
I sat under that wildlife tank for two hours and enjoyed lunch in the shade.
@@heartattackhiker3527 that’s a pretty good idea
It's not that bad I get to come down it 😊
You're trying to make me skip Payson
@@heartattackhiker3527 Jake’s Corner definitely adds some options. It worked out fantastic for us.

Going South in the mad-as-hell mountains, nice
Watch out for them Cholla Cactus
@@rya7642 first time I got nailed by one in the dark… thought I got bit by a snake
Do you put your GG sleeping mat under your tent?
During the day it's in the top of my pack and at night it's under my sleeping pad (inside the tent). It keeps my Thermarest quieter, offers a little protection from rocks, and prevents it from sliding around the tent.
@@shufflinansufferin I just thought I saw the mat under your tent when you were taking it down in this video. Must have been a groundsheet
@ yup… it was a ground sheet from an old Hubba Hubba.
In AZ you learn real quick not to camp by the only water source in the desert 🤣.
I try to never camp by water and in Arizona the desert oasis seems to be the hoppin' night spot for the rowdy wildlife. I think the only time we camped right by water on this trip was at Bright Angel campground.
@ The Superstitions have a few springs and if you camp by them during the dry season you will have cougars and bears tripping over your guy lines 🤣😂🤣.
@@Colby168 haha… that would make for an exciting sleep
Great video. I love hiking in Arizona. ❤❤❤❤
Thanks, me too!
That was a good water source. I think I may have camped at the same place as you?
@@heartattackhiker3527 That was a fantastic campsite.
I live in Pine, hiked this section in the video. The West Fire became a large managed burn which the community appreciated to provide additional protection
Enjoying your trip videos for AZT and TRT! What is the name of that cup you used to gather water from difficult sources?
@@johnbaranowski6840 Thanks! It’s a HydraPak SpeedCup. Super handy and lightweight.

I am really enjoying your AZT videos. How many days do think it will take in total? I am planning on doing the AZT next spring, SOBO as well.

Did you have to reserve the hotel in advance?
@@Dora_walking I think we booked our room a couple days before we got there.
Stunning views
Seems like you learned a lot about cold weather and snow walking, slush in trail runners gives you very wet feet, a ZOLEO would give you a weather forecast via satellite, hope you had neoprene socks and toe warmers! If not…next time, I am enjoying your vlog
@@Dora_walking yup, pretty wet feet… not a real fan of neoprene socks, so just my regular socks. We had the weather forecast but we got jammed up with camping in that valley so it was much cooler than the forecast.
