    Sheesh I need to work out. I can't lift my kayak like that without struggling

  • @jayhome2715
    @jayhome2715 3 роки тому

    May I also recommend some 25lb dumbbells....you really need to work out a little. Or bought a lighter kayak. Most importantly the Hullavator is only rated for 75lbs MAX Capacity. You just loaded up an 85 lb kayak. If that kayak was decked out with some stuff like a motor it could easily be 100 lbs. The Yakima showdown lift assist mount is 80lb MAX Capacity. Ultimately you purchased an extremely heavy kayak......I'm dying to know if it ever broke or if it just took it like a champ? It is 10 years after the fact.....

    One question. According to the specs on the Hulltivator it is limited to 34 KG (75 lbs) and my 2019 Outback is 47 KG (103 lbs). Yours appears to be a 2018 or before Outback but still must be over the 34KG. Any trouble with the lifting system at that weight?

    Why do you remove the pins before loading and unloading. I never have to do that.

    • @robthorpe1591
      @robthorpe1591 3 роки тому

      My Hullavator has a key lock. This might be an older model that had pins to lock int in the raised position. Having watched this again I don’t think he’s removing the pins that secure the cradle to the frame.

    Any reason why you don't lift either bow or stern first on to the rack and then pivot up to the other? I'm sure the chiropractors don't mind the extra business though.

    For what they charge for that thing you would be better off taking HGH and being able to lift your yak on the roof unassisted. If I'm going to pay that much I expect not to have to do that much phyiscal lifting.

    DON'T WASTE YOUR $1000.00 PLUS ON THIS GIMMICK. First of all unless you assembled many of them, it will take 4-5 hours to install the unit for the first time. The wings must be over extended for an Outback to fit. Even with proper extension of the cross bar, I put three small nicks on my brand new 4Runner. You need strong grip and knees to pull on handle and lift at the same time. Only good for small light kayaks.

    Just curious are you still using the Hullavator for your Outback, have you had any problems with it? It's only rated to lift 75 lbs but the dry weight of the Outback is 81 pounds. I'm about to have one installed on my car and I have an Outback as well.

      Scott Smith ... I have the same question. Our Hobie Outback is 5lbs over the maximum weight recommendation. (We have the Thule J-Hooks though, not the Hullavator but same weight allowance) Have any issues? TIA.

    • @nolidge1016
      @nolidge1016 6 років тому

      It is safe to transport in the J hooks, HOWEVER, it is going to be driving a sail boat, lol. It will catch a lot of wind. Think about getting the kayak saddles. My friend transports his hobie outback using the hullavator on his Subaru forester no problem. I just bought one to transport my Ascend FS12T.

      Kori McFly THANKS FOR THE REPLY!! Figured so and we do long drives so I think we’ll be laying it flat on the rails. We also have an SUP so just wondered if we could carry both at once, kayak in the J-Hooks and the SUP flat. Guess not, especially for long hauls.

    I think I am going to go with the Rhino Rack T-Loader seems to me you still have to lift the whole weight of the kayak to even get it on there where as the T-Loader your lifting half the weight from what I understand.

    I'm much smaller and shorter than him though younger but I can testify that these system really works I can load/unload and secure my kayak in less than 10 mins. With roller system it took me at least half an hour plus some balancing effort and a few scratches to my yak and van. The bonuses are you don't have to climb the roof of your vehicle to tie your kayak and you can take it off easily for storage. I have the Pro 898 version.

  • @MrMoises27
    @MrMoises27 7 років тому

    nice design, but I think it could work better if somehow the arms that hold the kayak could get closer to the ground so you won't need to pick up or lift it all the way up, your back will thank you. Great job.

    How wide is that Outback? I have a jackson big rig (2014) and wonder if it fits? Its winter here and i have allready bought the Hullavator.... cant test it since the boat is in a boathouse snowed down 1,5 hours away from me. If this fits, i guess the Jackson Big Rig does too. I have also checked the mesurement on both boat and rack and by the paper it shouldt work....

    How much does your fuel consumption increase by having the kayak and Hullavator installed? It looks like there is a fair amount of wind resistance, even without the kayak..

  • @mg-7047
    @mg-7047 9 років тому

    Looks to be a top notch elevator system, albeit at a high price. From the view of your property, and choices of auto, and kayak, I'm sure that's not a problem. Be careful with your lifting technique or you'll damage your back. Try to bend your knees, not your back, and not rest all the weight of the boat on one knee or side. Safe boating and thanks for the vid!

    I'm curious - most videos I see have people loading their kayaks so they rest on the roof rack in the right-side-up position. I've always loaded my boat so the hull is up. Seems more aerodynamic and no surprises if you're driving in rain. Am I missing something?

    • @Kolon999
      @Kolon999 9 років тому

      Rob Gilgan I don't think you are missing anything. In addition to aerodynamics, I see the issues of rainwater collection and strength of hull where the load bears. . I carry my surf ski inverted. I also managed to fold in one of it's sides carrying it on J-racks when the wind forces put a load on the side of the hull rather than the gunwales. Live and learn...

    • @tureencahill
      @tureencahill 9 років тому

      Kolon999 I always tie my kayak spray deck side up as there are more anchor points to lash the straps under/ over. So under serious, braking the thing doesn't become airborne and missile through some ones rear windscreen.

    Absolutely correct! Lift half of kayaks weight higher on top of car = lifting all kayak half the way, same work but easier on back if u lift front of kayak up on the roof! And look how high the boat is lying on car top! i'd say BS!

  • @IHeretic5000

    Coming from a job that requires lifting heavy objects, I'm confident in saying loading with a wheeleez cart and pivoting the kayaks weight around is easier and safer on your back.
