Xena was really just a springboard for a lot of young Kiwi actors trying to get noticed on a syndicated American show. Its cultural impact was far greater outside New Zealand than in it. Danielle Cormack (Ephiny) in 2019 was extremely embarrassed when asked about it and said she was terrible. Today you can still buy Lord of the Rings merch in NZ but Xena has vanished. There's a Xena street named where it used to be filmed, and that's it. I honestly think that Lucy Lawless is the only Kiwi actor who looks back on Xena with pride as a cultural icon, because almost no other actors benefited from it except to pad a resume.

@@AtenRa If that is true, then that is really unfortunate. On the one hand, I can totally understand, as it was campy in a way, but they should be proud that the show meant so much to so many people from around the world. It really pains me though, because those 2 shows are primarily the only 2 shows that the world remember the late Kevin Tod Smith for. That man was just oozing with talent. He could act, dance, and boy could he sing! It's really sad, because I really feel like he was about to break out and become a star on a global scale. His loss really reminds me of the late Andy Whitfield as well. Both men were such incredible talents that were taken far too soon. And both men ironically, worked closely with Lucy Lawless. May they both RIP.

@@Zero8880 I"m sure they'd be happy for people inspired by Xena, but a job's still a job. Rob Tapert made the most of New Zealand as a cheap filming location, but it hasn't put many local actors on the map. Many of Xena's recurring Kiwi actors who landed American shows post-Xena are largely confined to more Tapert/Raimi productions. The vast majority stayed on local New Zealand shows and theatre, which has always had a prominent role in New Zealand over TV. Kevin Smith had talent but was also typecast as campy villains in movie/TV not much different from Ares, but he had more robust roles in theatre. You can spot many Xena actors in the LOTR trilogy, but I'd say that Karl is the only one who truly made it big since Eomer is such a prominent and heroic role. If a Xena actor had landed as coveted a role as a Hobbit or Aragorn or Arwen, I'm sure they'd be much bigger today too.

@@AtenRa Anthony Starr is making a name for himself now as well. Manu Bennet as well. Not quite on the level of Karl yet, I agree. But yeah. I did spot several Xena/Herc alumni in the LOTR trilogy. In the Hobbit trilogy as well.

I have that impression as well. Many actors don't like to be remembered by only "one" role , in fact that's their worst nightmare I believe. But would he embarrassed by having played on xena ? Why?
