Akiya Kominka Life
Japan
Приєднався 21 вер 2021
#Renovating a former #akiya (empty house) Edo Period #kominka in Hiroshima prefecture, #Japan. Bought on Christmas morning, 2021. A serious health issue paused my work and caused me to think deeply about how I was leading my life. Plans to modernize the kitchen and amenities, and then rent it out as a holiday home. From there, I plan to get another, and another, and so on. For now, I just want to focus on being the best I can be, mentally and in my heart. Along with that, I'll keep renovating, growing, sharing, and making my dreams come true.

Obon Experience in Onomichi, Hiroshima 2024 お盆尾道広島
The first time I've had the opportunity to take part in Obon festivities and activities since coming to Japan years ago. The video has minimal edits somyou can really get the feel for not only the dance, food, and fun in the community, but also the taiko drumming at the shrine the next day -- where I actually got to have a try, myself!
Thank you to my neighbor and special friend Mibu San for inviting me, preparing me some food, and recording me at the shrine. It was a hot day, ne? But it was great fun.
Please enjoy this experience!

About Obon:
Taiko Obon drumming is a traditional Japanese performance closely associated with the Obon festival, a time for honoring ancestors' spirits. The drumming serves as both a musical and spiritual centerpiece, often accompanying Bon Odori (Obon dances) performed to welcome and celebrate the returning spirits of loved ones.
The taiko rhythms vary by region but typically feature dynamic, synchronized beats that create an energetic atmosphere. The drummers’ movements, including stepping and choreographed gestures, enhance the performance's visual and emotional impact. Beyond entertainment, taiko Obon drumming embodies themes of gratitude, remembrance, and community connection.

"1,000" Cherry Blossom Trees! 🌸 Senbonzakura

A day island trip to a little known place in Mihara with tons of Sakura! Known as "Senbonzakura," or a thousand cherry blossom trees, this place was a perfect visit for Sakura viewing and picnicking with my good friend And kanji sensei, Noriko San! It's located on a small island in Mihara, Hiroshima, and guess what I didn't see? Overcrowded areas of tourists or foreigners! It was a much more au...

Landslide & Mountain Water Runoff Repair Progress by Local Government Near My #akiya
Переглядів 2814 місяці тому
Today was Marine Day in Japan, a national holiday, so I was off from school. I needed to get mail from my #akiya #kominka in Toyosaka, plus I wanted to see the progress of the local government's #landreform around and on my property, so I visited the house and walked around to survey the area. What I found was great! Please consider donating to help me cover my cancer medication and treatments,...

Heavy Rains Have Shattered My Shed, Made Me Feel the Cold Hand of Death While Taking a Hot Shower 🚿
It's a special experience to be able to take part in, rather than just attend, a festival
You're shaved... I like it..
Haha....thanks. I actually had a date the day before this drama. The staff here say I look young. I guess it's just the inside that's aging and too quickly!
You're a trooper, Brandon! So sorry I missed this! Sending pozzies your way!
Thanks so much, Andy. Sorry I haven't been as interactive recently. Been a bit challenging between this, work, and school. Definitely keep trying my best -- you do the same!
I love how this editing kinda makes it look like you RAN to catch it but were too late XD
Oh no!!
And no idea when clean up can begin!
Got up at 4:30 just to be able to catch the right combo of trains, buses, and taxis to get there. Over 3 hours.
Amazing!😍 It looks really good!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I can't wait to get back to Japan in the Spring!
Love a good train ride. Kochi!
I miss the trains!
I don't actually get to ride them as often, being in a small area for studies. It was so much more fun in Tokyo, but even Hiroshima city has the cool streetcars!
@@akiyajapan That's right! And some of them survived the A-bomb!
Very nice
Hi Brandon, Id like to offer a different opinion. (Im not an expert) The house has been standing for over 100 years, its likely fine to sleep in. (Far safer than a 50 year old tile roof house). The local government will never tell you the house is 'safe' cause if they do then they are liable. You could ask a older local builder for a second opinion. I own a similar house down in Saga Prefecture. They are works of art.
Hey Andrew, thanks for the comments and encouragement. What you said reminds me of something I was told that some elderly Japanese say: "the old wooden Japanese houses stand through earthquakes while the newer buildings collapse." More than a few of the older generation have expressed this belief. I also get what you said about the tile roof houses. Those are unbelievably heavy!
@@akiyajapan No worries Brandon. The facts will always show the way.
I'm happy you're alive, Brandon. Thank you for sharing this
Thank you so much. I had. A good report during my hospital visit today so I'll share it soon. 💕
Wishing you all the best. 🌸
Thank you so much. Life's not easy, just do what we can, ne?
Missed it again! 😔 All I have to say is that I agree with you 100% in regards to dating...although I never dated in Japan, as Chie and I were engaged when we went to Japan. Someday I'll share some stories with you.
I sure look forward to that. I enjoy hearing your voice in the videos so much, I would love a face-to-face visit. 😆 Hope all is well, bro.
@@akiyajapan thanks Brandon. Chie and I are aiming to Japan for February, providing I'm all good to go. The treatments are done, but I feel like crap... I'm hoping to see improvements in a couple of weeks! Always have you in my thoughts!
Feeling quite devastated having missed the live feed.... I was all set up, and fell asleep. My energy levels just aren't there anymore. I watched the whole video, but it's not the same not being live. 😞 Thrilled to see that you look/feel a lot better. You're looking good. I want to say more, but I'll save that for an email. Take care!
You were missed, Andy! However, I will say that I know 100% what it's like to need the rest more than anything else. I'm glad you were able to sleep. Thanks for coming back to check it out and I look forward to hearing from you! You take care, too!
I'll do my best, Brandon!
It's tough and sometimes so tempting just to lie down and give up. Gotta keep hoping there's a sunrise coming.
@@akiyajapan I hear you! Hang in there buddy!
Wow beautiful green. That is way out there though. Glad you could make it back
hmmm.... interesting
There's a bear in there, and a boar as well. People are scared, and have stories to tell. Aussies will recognize that tune. It seems to fit the forest around your kominca. Good to see the place again. Stay well. We will chat again soon.
Yes, definitely! I'm interested in seeing them but at the same time glad I don't! 😂 Looking forward to chatting. Hope you and your family are doing well.
Full video premiering soon, ne?

Good luck with the test, Brandon!
Arigatou, Andy!!
9:03 to 9:12 is my favourite part 🌧
Mine is the crows. I don't know why so many people seem to not like them but I think they are quite interesting animals. Like hearing them in the background sometimes. :)
@@akiyajapan Darn, I missed that part 😂
Nice rainy day. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for stopping by ❤
Hi Brandon ! Which one of the platforms that you listed to support you are the best for you (I don’t want to send you money via a lmao that takes a huge cut and leaves you with nothing.) I want to help and share a little bit. I’m not rich and I don’t have a lot and struggle as well, but it’s important to help each other. Please stay strong and I will pray for you ❤
Chie and I worked at a school in a small town. This one office lady would rip on my wife, even if she wrung out the kitchen cloth incorrectly. Most of it was pretty silly. Someone phoned the school that I worked at because she saw me standing on the train platform, eating a melon pan. It's bad etituette, especially if you are a teacher. No one told me that. I had no idea. Of course, I never did that again 😁
LoL! That sounds almost communist! 😂 Reporting people for nonsense like that...god. I don't always agree with and follow every supposed etiquette law here. I use my own common sense judgement in the situation to determine if it really matters or not. For example, if I'm walking down the sidewalk and munching on a bag of mixed nuts, I'm okay with that. I don't care what anyone else thinks about it and it's not hurting or directly offending anyone, plus I see some locals doing it as well. However, you won't see me munching away on the local train or bus. Drinks are a different matter... If Japanese can take beer on the train, then I'm just fine to bring my Starbucks coffee on board. 😂
@@akiyajapan I wish we had the train etiquette like they do in Japan. People are bloody rude here, especially when it comes to cell phones, and sitting in senior/physically challenged reserved seating when they shouldn't be.
i think this applies to any country, not only japan...
Exactly my point in the video! It's about who the person as an individual is, not about the particular culture.
Wish you luck to overcome all the health related issues. Fifteen years ago or so my father had barely same problem, then surgery and hard recovery. Now he’s still doing well. Sure you’ll do your best and then be able to fully enjoy the life. Ganbatte ne!!
Alne, thank you. I had quite the important meeting today with my primary doctor and counselor. He didn't pull any punches about my treatment, in cost or side or effects. I'll be doing an update video about it soon, but I definitely appreciate all the positive encouragement I get.
Enjoyed the update on your kominka and the tour up behind it! Thank you!
Thanks Andy! I'm so happy there was such a great payoff at the end, after all the technical issues!!
Aye, cancer sucks. You need rest. Do you have your akiya, free and clear? Would you have to leave Japan, if your student visa gets revoked? Is there other kinds of visa for which you may be eligible? Can you work or go to school remotely?
Hey Rubies, thanks for watching me live and for the questions. I finally got to my hotel room in Hiroshima so I'll take a moment to rest and answer your questions. My akiya is "free and clear," as in I don't owe any payments on it or anything. I fully own both the land and the house, as well as the other five buildings. Anyone who has a visa/residency revoked or canceled will be given a certain amount of time to leave Japan. That includes a student visa. There are other visas but each one has its own requirements, so it's not "easy" to simply renew, change, or get another visa. For example, if I were physically capable, then I could get another visa to teach, but it would require a full-time job offer. There is some type of special, short-term remote work visa for foreigners now, but I don't believe I do any work that would qualify for it. Also, remote or online learning doesn't meet the requirements for a student visa in Japan. We actually have to attend in-person, full-time classes. Hope that answers your questions!
@@akiyajapan Thank you for answering my question. Allow me to make a suggestion? If you're a photographer, that might be perfect for remote work. And you're a U.S. citizen. If I were you, I'd be looking for photography focused on tourism and sales targeted to a Western audience.
I've already been posting photos online to sell as stock footage but I've made nothing. Also, local photography jobs are easy for Japanese to get.
The only way to deal with people like her is just not to take their words personally at all. Consider their words to be just a static going from the radio, tuned to free channel. You know who you are and you know your stuff, that's all you need to be firm in your mind, why should you care about her words?.. Taking offense from people like her people just makes no sense.
It's not about being "offended," it's about being verbally abused. I can handle people who are just unintentionally, accidentally offensive and apologetic, but to accept someone who yells at me, constantly criticizes me, and calls me names -- especially a boss or someone I have to be around often -- would be nothing short of insane. This was verbal abuse, pure and simple -- not simply "taking offense." The real way to deal with abusers is to walk away.
@@akiyajapan yes, that's right thing. you can't change other people, if they treat your badly, there is no reason to stay
🙏 God bless you, bro. Good to see you.
Thank you 🙏😊
I appreciate the honesty, hopefully you can find a loan and get the means to get that surgery you need. You can't do anything until you can draw a line under the health stuff. Have you tried selling your akiya/land? It's doing nothing and everything else should come second to your treatment.
I wouldn't mind selling it if it were possible and substantial enough to help. However, it's unlikely that I'd be able to find a buyer willing to pay enough for me to justify selling. Also, it does hold my stuff, so it's still useful.
sorry you had to go through this... unfortunate, I hope things get better, glad you could get this off your chest
I appreciate it, thank you. No place is perfect, even though some people try to make them out to be sometimes. I take it as just another detour to the right place. Hopefully I'll arrive soon. 😊
Bringing your story to light might help work on fixing or plugging holes in our society. Keep everyone aware of what you are dealing with 😊
Thank you. Well, if anything I post could ever do something like that, then I'd be honored. This life isn't easy but there's no reason why we can't and shouldn't make it better for each other. 💕
Brandon, I really appreciate your honesty and openness. I feel sorry for your former boss. She probably doesn't realise how damaged a person she is, and the effect it has on those around her. She should NOT be a boss. My first boss in Japan was very much like her. That's a story I'll share with you one day. Take care!
I hope we can sit down and chat about it one day, Andy. 😊
Scratch under the surface of the Japanese reputation and you find a country that has similar problems to most other places. Whether that be economics, social or just the 'different' individual people who find their own ways to deal with the world they live in. You seem to have crossed paths with one of those individuals. Keep moving forward and don't spend too much time looking back, you're not going that way. I'm treading water at the moment myself. I'm facing the right direction I want to go in, just not making any headway at this time. Stay focused. Keep moving,
You're wise to realize the difference between what's instinct and what's fear. Stay the course...yes, it's difficult, but at least when we meet our ends, we'll have retained our purpose.
Brandon, ほんとにかわいいそです! You have a heavy karma. But, you can still win in life. I watched your video twice. Because I too have the remnants of prostate cancer. I say remnants because I had a prostatectomy in 1996 and I needed to undergo chemo 2 years ago… my PSA elevated. Meaning, some of those cancer critters were hiding during surgery. Two years ago I was diagnosed to have stage 4 kidney disease (also a spot on my pancreas) but I was told by the doctor to drink tons of water and I will get through this. My diabetes is under control, I am anemic but that too is under control. I had blood clots in my left leg and my heart. I will be taking the blood thinner Eliquis for a few years. If you remember, I married in Tokyo when I was quite young. My wife and I were married for 55 years and cancer took her from me in 2014. Before we married (1959) she introduced me to Buddhism and after all these years, I am a practicing Buddhist. I chant twice daily and I will include you in my prayers. But, more importantly, I would like for you go to a Soka Gakkai district discussion meeting in Hiroshima. I guarantee you will not be disappointed if you speak with someone who speaks English. In April, I started my 86 journey around the sun and I plan many more. I also plan to go back to Japan this year. I haven’t been back since the pandemic. がんばれ a mi amigo. No snakes please 😊
Hebi ga kowai desu ka? Don't worry, I don't like them, either 😂 Thank you for your message and encouragement. Unsure why I didn't see and reply to it. Sounds like you have been through the ringer yourself. Life can be rough, ne? I'm about to do an update video about my house renovation by the city and my own new treatment which starts in a couple of days. There's a lot I'd like to tell you now but I hope you can see it in my video later, since it's too much to post here. In short, I've come to view my life long problems with this same kidney as a sort of core area in my body that's been taking on all of my trauma and negativity in life -- and maybe even past lives, who knows? Now, my gut tells me to have it taken out. The medicine I'm starting is supposed to prep me for that surgery. Thank you for your prayers -- seriously. I always welcome them, from everyone. I also will remember you and your situation. I definitely respect what you've endured.
