How to sow Green Manure and which varieties to choose
**Five Green Manures**
One of the most attractive green manures is **Phacelia**. Not only is it highly decorative, but it also attracts pollinators and helps weed control in your garden. Phacelia should be sown at the beginning of the growing season.
For acidic and poor soils, **Buckwheat** is an excellent choice. This fast-growing plant can thrive where other crops might struggle, making it a versatile addition to your garden.
The most well-known green manure is **Mustard**. It can be sown throughout the year, except during the heart of winter. Mustard is ideal for sowing between main crops or at the end of the growing season.
**Vetch** is another lovely option. Like other legumes, vetch has the unique ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen into the soil, enriching it significantly. This makes it a valuable addition to any crop rotation plan.
Another leguminous option is **Clover**. Clover seeds are very tiny, so they should be sown using a seed drill for an even distribution.
**How to Sow Clover**
In this section, Hubert demonstrates the process of sowing clover to enrich the vegetable garden soil over the winter months, following the cultivation of nutrient-exhausting crops like cucurbits.
1. **Prepare the Ground**:
Start by preparing the soil. This involves removing any debris and breaking up the soil to create a fine tilth.
2. **Broadcast Sowing**:
Sow the clover seeds by broadcasting them evenly over the soil surface. Remember the old saying: "Who sows finely, reaps thickly." This implies that a well-distributed sowing will result in a dense and healthy crop.
3. **Rake the Soil**:
Lightly rake the soil to cover the seeds. Pass the rake over the soil first in one direction and then in the opposite direction to ensure even coverage.
4. **Firm the Soil**:
After raking, compress the soil slightly either by foot or using the back of a rake. This helps the seeds make good contact with the soil.
5. **Allow for Germination**:
Leave the seeds undisturbed to germinate. For optimal success, clover should always be sown in warmed soil. If done right, the clover will grow robustly.
In the spring, you have two options. You can either turn the clover into the soil to enrich it for new crops or leave it to grow longer. By leaving the clover, you allow the parcel to rest and potentially use the clover as fodder for livestock.
Unlike clover, mustard should be sown in the autumn. It grows quickly but will die off and decompose over the winter months, enriching the soil in preparation for spring planting.
Each variety of green manure offers unique benefits, from soil conditioning and weed suppression to nitrogen fixation and providing forage. By understanding how to sow each type properly and choosing the right variety for your specific needs, you can significantly improve your garden's health and productivity. Whether you opt for the decorative phacelia, the versatile buckwheat, the well-known mustard, the nitrogen-fixing vetch, or the enriching clover, green manures are a valuable addition to any sustainable gardening practice.
