6 Strategies to Overcoming Sewing Burnout (Sewing Rut)
Have you ever sat at your sewing machine completely and utterly uninspired? Have you lost your motivation to sew? Is your sew-jo missing? You're not alone, I loose my sewing motivation more than I would care to admit.
What is your #1 tip to combating sewing burnout?
I often procrastinate on projects so bad that in order to meet a deadline I have to sew for too many hours straight for too many days in a row which causes some severe quilting burnout.

I'm 72yrs old, born in Gatesville, TX., and I remember many times when my grandmother and mom had quilting bees. Some of the quilts looked like patch work, but many had a design. They drank coffee, tea, lemonade, and ate snacks while they chatted and sewed. The comforters were sure nice on those cold Texas nights, and with no central air and heat they were appreciated. My last two quilts were stolen from my car in 1971, and it broke my heart. I like quilting bees because on those days' we kids got some extra snacks. When I first moved to Florida, I read they had quilting bee classes at the University of Jacksonville, and I liked the idea of keeping the craft alive. Great way to get together, have fun, and make have a product. They made the quilts for themselves, and rotated the order, and some for charity. I've taken up too much time now. Just sharing.

I also keep my batting that is 5 inches or less however I use it for my string quilts. I use the batting with fabric on the back to make the string quilts then piece together to start a rag quilt. That way I also use up every bit of my leftover scrap fabric. I also keep all of my fabric that is 1 1/2 inches or more. I have a drawer for 1 1/2 inch strips of fabric and a box for my 1 1/2 inch squares. That way they're ready to use when I need them. Also do for other sizes of leftover fabric.

ive been corcheting most of my life but i recently got over a few boxes with diffrent fabrics, ill like to start sewing but right now im trying to reserch a little and since englidh isnt my first langues im struggeling, would anyone explain a few things for me ? i dont think if i wanna try quilting just yet but a few projects ive been looking at tells me i need to get batting 1. what is batting is it "just" the fabric in between? 2. as mentioned in the video can it be just anyting to give structure or is there some type of rule i have to follow? 3. at the moment i have fabric siccors and imbroidery thread, an old sewing macheen and some pins, what do i need to buy what is the "you cant live without" becaus internet tells me i need tons of stuff and i cant buy all of that, so what is the most important 4. ive come over a few bags of old unwanted clothes would i be looked down upon if i cut them apart and use that fabric too? or do i need to only use the fabrics from the stores ? 5. for non wearable things like bags and bookmarks, can i use diffrent types of fabrics or does it need to be all poliester or all cotton ?

I'm going to try to answer all your questions: 1) batting is the layer between the top and backing, it adds a layer for warmth and can be purchased batting, or I have also used a thin cheap blanket too. You'll want to take in account shrinkage of the material and durability but it doesn't have to be specific 'batting' from a fabric shop. Also, people in hot climates will not even use a batting layer so quilts can be used even when it's too hot. 3) You'll also want a rotary cutter, rotary mat and a ruler for cutting accurately. But if you are making a quilt out of squares and are accurate with scissors then that can wait. You'll also need thread for the sewing machine, I typically use 40 or 50 weight cotton thread. Remember that 100+ years ago they didn't have all the things that we have now, and although some things make quilting easier and faster it is not 100% necessary. 4) You can most definitely use any material that is durable to last through washing and using. But for your first quilt, I would not recommend any fabric that stretches. They are very hard to work with and typically needs a stabilizer. So stick with wovens until ready to move to other types of material. 5) Fabric interfacing, fusible interfacing, or products with similar names will help a lot if using stretch material. I like to experiment with fabrics, and sometimes it just doesn't work out, but sometimes it does. Please let me know if you need any more help! and happy quilting 🥰

I have seen fabrics for sale for less than in the quilt stores and you hold them up and you can see through them. Those I would consider to be of a lower quality. To me a tighter weave wouldn’t wear out as quickly as a looser weave. I try to stay away from the see-through fabric. Thank you for your post.

Last Spring I made 4 - larger than twin smaller than queen - quilt tops which I realized I could not quilt on my sewing machine even though it has a BSR - just too large to handle at my age. So I needed to send them out to a long arm quilter and they ended up averaging $140.00 each! So needless to say I became disheartened, though they were appreciated by the recipients, the cost of making them bothered me. Hundreds of dollars and time spent. I have a couple dresser drawers worth of fabric in my “Stash” not a closet to wall full like some and though I have a great regular machine and a nice set-up I’m just in a slump. I’m considering that maybe if I make some smaller lap size quilts, that I might be able to complete them myself. I also did recently go through the quilting books I have to only keep those that I felt I’d use the patterns out of. So hoping tidying /re-organizing/decluttering may help me get out of this slump. I have a supportive husband and find my worst critic is myself. He said it’s ok to take a break, but it’s been a year now which should be long enough. Sorry I don’t have any results yet to share on how to get out of the “slump” but I’m working on it and these are a few steps I’ve taken. Thank you for your post and I pray you have an answer to your hand pain so you can get relief. ❤

My problem is I don’t know what to do with my finished quilts. I’ve given many away as gifts to everyone I can think of. I’ve made 80 blocks for Quilts of Valor and I’ve sewn 3 quilts with some of those blocks. I’ve got a stack of quilt tops to quilt so I told myself no more sewing until you reduce that pile. I’m only allowed to sew FQS Mystery Quilt which is one block per month. It’s so bad I went through my entire scrap bin, cut and organized by color. I just need a purpose other than finding more space for my quilts. I’m always looking for someone to give a quilt to but not everyone appreciates a quilt. My hands look like yours; long fingers, my hands are very flexible. I hope you resolve your hand pain problem.

Was working on a complicated top a couple years ago. Tiny pieces, points and seams not lining up. I got very frustrated and just stepped out of my sewing room. To get myself motivated to sew again, I grabbed a jelly roll and made a "jellyroll race" top. Fast, easy and it turned out great (it's one of my favorite quilts now). That's all it took to shake me out of my funk. Finished my "complicated" top (Lake House by Zelda Lawrence-Curran) and its ready to be quilted.

I don’t sew professionally and have a full time job. I have more ideas than time. That alone causes a sense of pressure to get in my sewing room and burnout. I would spend time in my sewing room everyday if only to practice a technique for 30 minutes. I’ve taken the pressure off to enjoy the summer weather and spend as much time as possible with my two year old and newborn grandkids. I do keep my sewing room tidy and clean bc it’s pleasing to return to. Taking the pressure off is a liberation that later results in creativity. Good to see you, Kayla. I hope the issues with your hands are easily resolved.

A little off topic. Choosing a gluten free diet helped my hand pain measurably. Please consider trying it for three weeks to see if it offers a little relief. I also quit nightshades. Best wishes on a reliable diagnosis.

One great way to start sewing again is to have muslin squares ready. I just sit down and sew prints to muslin 2", 2-1/2", 3", 3-1/2", 4", whatever for 10 or 15 minutes. It really helps me sort out what I want to work on next and pretty soon I have a cool checkerboard quilt.
