7 Tips To Address Challenges in Your Piano Practice
The best way to make more progress in piano is to improve your practice methods. This video tackles seven different and difficult aspects of practicing piano. My hope is that you'll be able to put at least one of these to use in your own practice, and that it will serve you well: either by accelerating your progress, or by improving how you feel as you continue in piano.
Happy practicing!

I'm so happy i found this out, i was feeling frustrated because of how slow my progress was in sight reading after you pointing out it would take 2-4 years on some of those songs, i felt an insane relief... I'm in my 1-2 year and just picked up sight reading, so i thought i was REALLY behind Now i think I'm just fine... Thank you for this! Really insightful

Merci Tia, these are nice breaks from my piano practice, and the tips help out. I'm preparing a recital piece, Sizilienne by Schumann. It's probably for March, and I sent a recording to my family and to my circle of musician friends. I'm starting every practice with a singing drill on A2, and I've moved up to A3, and even down to E2. It took me 68 years of my life to be able to do that. My family just had a Zoom meeting, and I talked to my 5th sibling (I'm the 6th of 8) and told him that my horrible voice has been blamed on his behavior in church when I was 5 years old. Whenever I sang a false note, he'd laugh and encourage me to continue. My younger brothers would laugh and get in trouble. In Choir classes up to 2nd Secondary, every director told me to move my lips and not make a sound. I tried to get a stage voice at the encouragement of an opera singer friend that was directing student plays in university. In Summer Semester, I signed up for beginning singing. The professor had just had a baby, and the stroller was next to her piano covered in lace, and I walked in. She said that we would start with a 16th century Italian song. I said I don't sing. She looked at me, and said that we would sing a Renaissance song. I said I didn't sing. She then asked me what I sang, tenor, bass, baritone. I said I didn't know since I didn't sing. She plunked (actually, she problably played) some notes in the middle and had me sing them back. Then she moved down, then up, back to the middle, up and down again. She then asked me if it was too late to be re-imbursed. I was devastated. And it was too late. I went back for the second session, and she profusedly apologized. Then she (correctly) told me that my ear sucked, and tried to teach me the rudimentaries, but I wsan't motivated. Until I started the piano 2 1/2 years ago. Even then, I had a lot of trouble. But I used the pitch monitoring software, and used the Rule of the Octave to help train my ear. I also did some EMDR with my Psychologist, and that has helped. I don't know if I will join a choir, but we will sing Christmas songs next week.

Just a comment when you stopped Chopin because of hand pain. When you move your right shoulder, it looks like the rotator cuffs aren't working smoothly. I've got a video for exercises for the low back, shoulders and hands that might help. Title below, but no link since You Tube doesn't like links sometimes. Since you're in Canada, you might ask a local baseball team if they have a soigneur, or trainer that can help out. Baseball and shoulder go hand-in-hand, er, something like that even if it might be a mixed metaphor. The shoulder moves because of muscles, so massaging is the treatment of choice. As a Chiropractor, I learned lots of techniques to manipulate, and there are many osteopaths that also manipulate. NOT recommended. I told my association this, and offered to teach my techniques in Zurich, but I'm blacklisted in the canton since they caused my shoulder problem. Oh My Aching Bach

I consider myself a cobweb-infested early to late beginner. But I can do some technical drills that are more advanced, since I just cruised You Tube for too long and tried different things. I've tried scales at thirds and sixths. Slowly. I don't like speed, but I'm working with my teachers. When I try even two notes the beat, I have a hard time following. They give me a break since I'm an older learner, and I have inner ear problems. Rhythm is associated with the inner ear, so it's a great excuse. I'll make another comment after I've finished the video, since it helps the Al Gore Rhythm. Oh, bonjour Tia, et merci beaucoup.

I've been practicing scales a lot since being a rank beginner. My teacher says I have a good understanding, but now I have to work on my musicality. I'm starting out my practices with hands seperate scales, and only if I have time together. I have a routine for practicing modes, but I don't do them in the C Major Scale order. i will do the major scale, then the Lydian, since it is the only one which uses a sharp, then, Major, Mixolidian, Dorian, Aeolian, Melodic and Harmonic, Phrygian and Locrian. That way I just flatten the 7th, 3rd, 6th, 2nd and then the 5th. There are two other scales to practice, but I don't know the names. One is with the 4th flattened, and then the Tonic flattened. Sheepishly, I am still working my way through two Level One method books: La Methode Rose and John Thompson. This is not the first time I've gone back, but as I said, I need to work on musicality and real basic techniques. My teacher is supportive and is willing to help me learn to feel the music. I've heard you play various pieces, and would love to play at your level. Slow and steady.
