    I have a 45-watt transmitter in a similar rack project box out in the garage from when I was about 13 when a buddy and I were running a Pirate station for our town as we had one school, The population was around 6k and in the middle of nowhere so we had one station. It was run by old gray-haired conservatives and played nothing but easy listening crap, so we made our own station, I was upgrading to my Tech HAM license then so it was a great learning project to parallel my ham radio builds as my parents would not buy me radios I had to build my RX TX station. We ran that for two years until I moved when 16, and they ran it for another year before getting shut down, I was able to retrieve the FM transmitter and have had it since, I always hoped one of my nephews would grow to show interest in radio so I could pass it on but they never did, It has an internal exciter and a two-stage preamp and was PLL controlled, with the PSU being external, and I recall the transmitted getting very hot after the 6 hours it ran every afternoon evening sometimes longer in the summer when school was out, and would itself heat the garage in the winter. Seeing that brought back some fond and not-so-fond memories. LOL

      I haven't lived in that area for a very long time so not I've been in there for ages, so I could be wrong but it looks a lot like the "Lad in the Lane", Erdington, and yes it's a very old pub, about 600 years old, Grade 2 listed, closed only a couple of years ago I think. edit: looks like I'm right 22.20 it's written "Lad in the Lane" on an electrical panel.

    I doubt it is a breakers yard as it looks like stock to be restored. Also I would say they are relaying the track at the start of the video. There are around 1000 miles of railways in preservation now thanks to the determination of so many volunteers.

    That transmitter is not old, it's from the mid 2010's, it's around 10 years old or even newer, the 15 watt amplier is a RD15hvf1, theese modules are still available from the guy who sold this amp and the 1 watt PLL fm exciter, he's based in Athens Greece and still selling them on ebay. The amp as not perished it's probably been set to limit the output power to half the output power. Definately not from back in the day!!!

    That brings back memories of using a stereo encoder made from a 4053 and 4060 IC fed in to a simple PLL circuit, in to a 1watt amplifier board, then a 20W Philips PA module from a Pye Westminster that was fed in to a PYE A200 linear amp, the old PMR Band M1 which was ex gas board on 106MHz and ideal for putting out 70Watts, it used to take 13Amps at 13.8v so run off a car battery. That all went to a home made slim jim antenna measuring just over 2m tall on a pole. Due to lack of experience and forgetting to put adequate RF filtering after the PLL, it wiped out most of 88-108MHz for 5 miles but was heard over 40miles away! Good times. I always wanted to try Medium Wave but only managed 2Watts!

  • @voiceofjeff
    @voiceofjeff 10 місяців тому

    Hey there. I worked in radio for 45 years in the USA and actually owned three stations. What you have looks like an "FM exciter", a liw powered transmitter that generates a "composite FM" signal that's designed to be used with an HPA (high powered amp) that can amplify the wattage to a level necessary for a commercial FM station. Good idea to not use it on the air, but I did enjoy your test. I also enjoyed your narration; you have a pleasing voice! Be well!

    • @TonyLing
      @TonyLing 10 місяців тому

      What do you mean 'composite FM'? It has no MPX. It is baseband in, and mono TX. It can be considered both a 5W transmitter or a 5W exciter.

    • @voiceofjeff
      @voiceofjeff 5 місяців тому

      Hey Tony. Composite FM is basically a stereo signal with left & right channels with stereo information. If you have a small mono only FM transmitter, feed a 19,000Hz audio tone into it. Watch the stereo light on your radio light up! This transmitter seems to have a "multiplex" (stereo) generator built in..

    I did enjoy that mate. It takes me way back to just beyond my "High School" days, when me mate (A professional radio -station engineer) was quite into the same thing. His house bedroom was virtually a working FM radio station. He used to take me on Friday night drives down Main Street of our little city (which had ONLY 4 "REAL" radio stations). Because of our isolated location. Everybody was constantly engaged in "Station -Hunting" as they paused before the "RED" light. It was extremely gratifying to us when they discovered "OUR" station playing a 1960's format (Complete with P.S.A.'s and commercials. In addition to the R.F. equipment he also had a professional "Insta-Cart" system that gave it that "Professional Sound". I think it was 30 Watts he was pushing and I devised a "Touch-Tone" control decoder for it so It could be hastily shut -off from either the car, or from ANY Land -Line telephone. I'm guessing... but I believe "YOURS" was built (OVER THERE). Reason being is the frequency you displayed on the "Baofeng" At 106.4 Mhz (I believe). Well it's a little known fact BUT... For some reason, all radio station frequencies (On Your Side Of the Pond) have frequencies that end in "EVEN NUMBERS" (2-4-6-8), to the right of the decimal. And "OURS" end in "ODD NUMBERS" (1-3-5-7)! Weird HUH ? Hi-Hi... Not so weird. I'm sure they did that "On Purpose" Right! Take care mate, your lots of FUN. Great presentation. Jeff 8:44
