The 10 meter high frequency (HF) ham radio band when the solar flux is up can energize the atmosphere like it's on fire! You can easily make radio contacts around the world from your backyard with a simple wire dipole antenna and just a few watts of power. But at times the 10 meter amateur radio band can be a dud. In this video, on this day, I could hear lots of signals from around the globe: G...

Sometimes in amateur radio contesting it can be all or nothing, especially when your are in Hunt & Pounce Mode. Atmospheric conditions with the ionosphere can be challenging at times. In this case I was only using 50 watts of power into an end-fed half wave antenna for the 40, 20, 15 & 10 meter bands. How did i do? Don't forget to like, subscribe, and hit the bell icon to stay updated on my lat...

You win some. You loose some. Lots of signals and radio pileups to try and bust through. I just wasn't making it through to complete the contacts on this day. The atmosphere wasn't smiling down on me. I was using a 50 watt end fed half wave antenna and that was probably not helping either. Amateur Radio CQ WW Contest HF DX contacts

Texas has been booming on my radio. I’m in NC & Europe comes in in the morning hrs. In the afternoon I get stations from SouthAmerica.
I haven’t been on HF since the CQ Worldwide Contest. Hope to get on during the holiday at some point. Thanks for the comment and Happy Thanksgiving!
Heard you in Colorado the other day 5-8 👍
Awesome! Thanks for the signal report!! 73!
Technician trainee checking in. Best regards. Godspeed 73
Good luck! Keep training! 73!
Let's go talk on GMRS frequencies!
I don’t have a license or gear yet.
Great video! de W2CSI
Thank you. My channel is a work in progress. Thanks the comment and for watching!
I am so annoyed right now, I have to replace the UHF/VHF final in my 991a and the solder is not cooperating with my many soldering irons hot air or standard. I have had my 991a for a while and love it better than my DX 10…. I still have half power from it so I guess I will limp for a little while….
Unless your signal is 59 contesters ignore you - it's the only explanation I have for what I hear on contest days LOL. 73 M7BLC
That may happen with some ops. But I’ve broken into some pileups where I’ve had to repeat parts of my callsign a couple of times to complete the contact. In my experience most of them have been very patient with me or have apologized b/c they just couldn’t hear me 100% and I appreciate it immensely when they try to pull me out and don’t let it bother me and just move on so I’m not taking up valuable time for others.
I heard you on the air the other day. Cheers from Canada. Ve1 bno.
I’m sure I heard you as well. I often wonder what I sound like at different spots around the world. I mean, I know I’m heard because I make contacts! 😆That’s kind the reason I started my channel to give others a chance to hear themselves. Thanks again for the comment.
You was struggling with 50, imagine me with 20 on the g90 and random wire. My vertical seems to do Better
I’m slowly building up my (used) Ham Stick collection.
Nice group of contacts! 15 is one of my favorite bands to hunt for DX. 73 de N2VQD
Mine too and I don’t get on it enough. I need to send more time on it. 👍🏼
It's crazy how open 10m has been. I've DX'd all over the world w/ a Super Stick staked out in the back yard! Can't wait to get some real antennas up. Hopefully it'll stay this good until I do!
I hope it will as well. Any style antenna should work. Mine is a 50 watt end fed half wave. Planning on upgrading to a 100W end fed at some point. End feds are great for portable ops! Thanks for the comment!
10 meters will be wide open for at least a year or more and consistent for 2 or 3 years. After 3 years or so dx will be less common. Even at the bottom of the solar cycle there will still be openings for skip.
10m has been on absolute 🔥
Yes it has! Lots of activity during the CQ WW DX SSB contest the weekend before Halloween! 77 contacts for me on that one!
I went through that once, I once tried for half an hour to work a station in New Zealand on CW and finally worked him only to find out later when trying to confirm the contact that he got my call wrong.
Aww man! That Murphy’s Law right there! 😮
Listened to you try to work HG8R for awhile. After about the 4th try, I would have tuned off frequency just a tad high and tried it. If I had no luck, I would have just called him with 5 AMERICA another 3 times. If no luck still, I would have moved up the band working guys and then came back around to try again. Just idea’s, GL.
Thanks for the tips! 👍🏼 I’ve done that before. There are many tricks to try to get the contact that I’ve picked up along the way.
It would be awesome if EVERYBODY knew the differenc e between and how to use the words "lose" and " loose" !!
😆 My bad! I changed the title after I mixed a thumbnails & titles between a couple of videos I uploaded at the same time. Thanks for catching it! 👍🏼
On those bands propagation and time of day often makes a difference. Just one of those days for you. Best de N2VQD
The only reason I clicked your click bait video is because I thought the click bait picture of the YL was actually a ham in the video.
I think I used the wrong thumbnail on the wrong video. A friend brought this to my attention today and I’ll fix it soon.
I have just two quick tips... First this understand these guys have BIG BOOM Antenna so when you get a 5/5 or 5/4 or 5/3 "You give them a 5/1 or a 5/2 so it's hard hearing you.. I don't know your antenna or Power your using as your meter is set on SWR. When calling them back try to be more of Frequency so your 5/1 5/2 will have a better chance of Them hearing you better.. 73 Chris Your Ham Radio Elmer.
I was using an half wave end fed at 50W in this instance. I’m in an HOA so I deploy antennas temporarily. Instead of letting the HOA get me down, I see it as a challenge! 😃 So I try to be stealthy and try different configurations with end feds, dipoles and verticals and do the best I can with what I’ve got. Even after almost 10 years in the hobby, I’m still learning each time I’m on the air. Thanks for the advice! 73!!
My voice is a bit higher pitch than your "average" male voice, and I learned long ago that pitching it up slightly higher cuts through the QRM...
this is another thing that voice training helped me with
I once used an AI-generated female voice during a pileup, but I've since quit all that contest stuff. It's just a waste of time.
Us men are weird creatures. I guess his walkie talkies weren't fun enough had to upgrade to radio towers and huge transmitters. I dont understand the fascination but hey I'm sure it's cool in it's own way.
Communicating with someone from Texas to Washington State, USA without using a cellphone and using a radio and some pieces of wire I made into an antenna is very cool to me! Thanks for watching!😃

Well, you know what they say: “ No matter where you go… there you are.”
#truth Running a pileup on 3 different bands on 2 different rigs with up to 4-5 ops all wanting contacts can get hectic.
@@wa5azqhamradio Heh. 💯
The 10M band can be amazing. At the top of the sunspot cycle I had a weekly sked with VP8KL in the the Falkland Islands from Cyprus as ZC4MO. Never failed.
Yep. Good old 5/9! Yet, you have to send back a bunch of times! What a joke! He's to lazy and/or stupid to send a good report to you. How unfortunate! Sounds more like a glorified good buddy than a ham radio op.! Kd7cjo 73
I’ll just go with: you don’t do much, if any, contesting or you think contesting “clogs up the bands”. So without giving a TED Talk on contesting…Getting the exact exchange needed for a particular contest is more important than a true signal report…everyone that does contesting uses “59” for expediency. Contesting is a challenge to see how many contacts a station can make in a certain amount of time. It’s not a ragchew. Thanks for watching! 😃 I hope the rest of your day goes better!
You gotta watch out for that KD3E guy.
Right?! He pops up out of the ether and sprays his wisdom like flying insect spray! 😆😆😆
Wow. That is awesome. You always work that 2m propagation well.
Thanks! It’s challenging and fun!
Digital Noise Reduction is on and can sound this way. On my FT-991A I do not use it very much only on it's minimum setting. It only seems to work well when you have a signal in there. With just unsquelched radio it sounds very watery is a term I have heard used for the sound. 15 meters is way under used in my opinion. Keep learning that is part of the fun of Ham Radio.
I’ve been loving 15m! I’m 76/100 towards Mobile DXCC and I’ve had great luck on 15m. Just today, I spoke with Gyorgy in Hungary, HA5JI, on 15m for the 3rd time. Just 50w SSB with the FT-891/ATAS-120A mag mount combo from Pennsylvania. I take a quick spin through 10m because of the sunspot cycle and if it’s dead, go to 15m. Tnx de WB3CFN/m
Sorry. For some reason I’m just now seeing your comment. When it’s open, 15m is great! 50W mobile. That’s awesome!! 👏🏼
Wow, what mode are you operating? It certainly is not SSB. It sounds very digitized and narrowband. Virtually impossible to understand the audio. If it *is* SSB, it sounds like your digital processing is really messing up the audio quality. :(
Yes. Thats analog SSB. Not digital. 15 meters was just about the only usable band towards the end of this international contest. So, as the title states, the band was VERY crowded. I haven’t completely figured out how to use all the filters yet, but I’m trying. Thanks for the comment! 👍🏼
Thanks for the interesting video. I like to see what propagation is like from videos and how different transceivers sound.
Thanks for the comment! Thats kind of my thinking for starting my channel. I’m trying to start adding the callsigns of the contacts in the chapters of each video so if people want you to search their call, they can see how they sounded to me. Hopefully I’ll work up the courage to being in front of the camera soon. 😆

I might have to. Do they make a 220 model?
What are you doing in this clip?
Thanks for the question. Do you mean as a whole? It’s ham radio. Or what am I doing with the radio?
That’s a great video. I run a Yaesu FTM-400 in my truck and one of coolest contacts I’ve made on simplex 146.520 was with a Lear Jet pilot at 37,000 feet. I was near Muenster, Texas and he was flying southbound over Lawton, Oklahoma heading to Cleburne, Texas. He made a lot of contacts at that altitude while I rarely catch anything up here in north Texas on simplex. Thanks for sharing your video! K5DEH
Thanks for the comment. Aeronautical contacts are really fun. The 400 is a great radio! I have family up in Denton and are up there often. I haven’t heard much activity on simplex either, but I’m there mainly on weekends & holidays. Maybe we should try & schedule a QSO. We might need some tropospheric ducting to help us. Gainesville is 30 mins from Denton right?
@@wa5azqhamradio That is correct. Gainesville is approximately 30 miles north of Denton on I-35. Have a great day.
There's a lot of activity on 146.52 around Portland, Oregon. We've had QSOs with a couple F-18 pilots out of the Naval Air Station in Washington. This should put a smile on your face when it comes to 146.52 activity. I didn't get the recording started as soon as I wanted as I wasn't prepared for this to happen. ua-cam.com/video/vseRPddt_4A/v-deo.html

It's the Yaesu FTM-400. I love that rig! It’s a dual band FM radio (VHF & UHF) with 2 meters & 70cm. They have stop producing them but you can get them second hand. I have NO IDEA why someone would make this their hobby. The brains and cash required to become a ham are considerable, only to find that the airwaves are filled with old people discussing their most recent doctors appointments. (Jerry on the Northville repeater, I'm talking about you...)
And here I was worried that the lack of a thumbnail would hurt this video's chances of being seen. But you watched and commented. 🤷🏼♂️ Here's to hoping your day gets better!
It great you were able to get contacts on 2 meters and 70 cm simplex.... In our area you can call Simplex for hours... No one wants to play Radio.. Lots of FT8 etc but very little simplex phone. Thanks
Luckily I live near a big metro area with a major interstate running through it. The ham community is very active here as well. Lots of hills helps with elevation to get our signals out further too. Thanks for watching! 73!
