I started watching the movie when I was 16 (on CBS for the first time) and some of us imitated Chris MacNeill's histrionics each time she heard even worse news about Regan, or about Burke being dead outside the house. We thought she was hilarious at that age. Now 60, I've been seeing the film in quite a different light, different perspective, and I'd ask myself how I'd handle a situation such as that with which Chris MacNeill found herself having to cope. Linda's right about the pain she put in her voice. Ellen Burstyn was a highly effective actress and she brought real pathos to the character and the story and because of her we'd really come to care about Regan. One of the most recent times I watched the Exorcist, I didn't get scared, I didn't have any fun with it, I almost had tears in my eyes thinking about what that poor woman went through with her only daughter having been wrapped up in something far beyond her control. "That thing upstairs is not my daughter". That could be said about a young girl who is in an abusive relationship, or is a crack addict, or suffering from something just as awful, if not worse.

I don't like William friedkin he abused his workers,and acted like a dictator,so what if the French connection and the exorcist were good films the outcome is no excuse for being an asshole.
