Photographing Football under Floodlights & Foggy Conditions. Unexpected Results | Sport Photography
Greetings everyone, welcome to tonight's exciting game under the floodlights at the AIM community stadium. I'm equipped with my trusty gear, the Canon 1DX Mark II and the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 Mark II lens.
Tonight's game was made even more difficult with constant rolling fog on and off, reducing the visibility of the game for both the football officials as well as me the photographer, surprisingly, the fog actually helped, and I wasn't expecting that.
During gameplay, I'll be utilizing Auto ISO with an aperture of f/2.8 and a shutter speed ranging from 1/1000 to 1/12000 of a second to capture the fast-paced action. But, when the game slows down, I can quickly switch to f/4, 1/250th of a second using the settings recall function on my 1DX Mark II. This is perfect for capturing detailed images of managers, referees, and players.
For those far-off shots towards the goal line or away team dugout, I'll be using the Canon 7D Mark II with the Canon 300mm f/2.8 Mark II lens mounted on a monopod. The settings for this setup will be Auto ISO, f/2.8, and a shutter speed ranging from 1/800 to 1/1000 of a second.
The second half was much like the first, with Pershore Town continuing to dominate and keep up the pressure for the full 45 minutes. As expected, the conditions worsened with a thickening fog rolling in from the nearby river and fields, causing disruptions for the match officials.
Thankfully, the officials allowed the game to continue, and I managed to capture one of my favorite goals to date - a powerful header from 9 yards out that sealed the victory for Pershore.
What's interesting is that the fog acted like a natural softbox and reflected a lot of the floodlight back down onto the pitch and players, resulting in both cameras having more light to work with. This simplified the backgrounds and helped enhance the photos I captured.
Let me know what you think! Thank you for watching, and don't forget to leave your favorite image in the comments below. I can't wait to hear from you, and I'll see you at the next game.

In todays video I discuss trading in the Canon 400mm 5.6 L lens for a Canon 300mm 2.8 IS L USM II lens for its better low light performance and increased sharpness after using the the Tamron 150-600mm G2 as the comparison and justification to do so. With the shorter days and winter months not far behind photographing football at night will become more of a challenge and will push my Canon 1DXII...

Football photography is a relatively new genre of photography for me. I saw a social media post about my local football team, Pershore Town Football Club at the beginning of the year and I had a light bulb moment, why not see if I could pop down and photograph the next football match. 1 game photographing football at night led on to me photographing several more football matches and although mi...
