I'm so glad that I was a boy before social media and electronic gadgets. Swoppits were the pinnacle of toy soldiers, especially the mounted jousting knights.
❤
The cap badges are from the regiments ,my late Grandfather’Bob Cowell ‘…was in ,…also the ‘military medal ‘for Bravery in the Field which he won …I was lucky that both my Grandfather’s survived WW1
Don’t forget you can stop it on any page …and enlarge it !…some pages are not as sharp as others ….but I only have a basic I phone to take the pictures 😬🤷♂️👀….if you are a collector of Heralds and Britains plastics …I highly recommend you ,try to get hold of a copy ….mine is starting to look a bit shabby …because of use ….cheers Don 🙏
This is a tribute to peter Cole’s superb line drawings from his Book the history of Heralds & Britains plastic figures including the Animals …between the years 1953- 1999 …none of Britains vehicles are included…this book is unfortunately out of print and even 2nd hand copies worth a small fortune are very hard to come by and is regarded by collectors as the “Bible “…of Heralds & Britains plastic soldiers etc…also a big Thank you To the late Roy Selwyn Smith and his team of sculptors and workers for Heralds & Britains ….for me the best toys of my childhood 🙏🇬🇧
Slight conversion….Rollup in the corner of his mouth …after watching “they shall not grow old “the Peter Jackson Documentary…where he colourised the old B/W film footage of WW1….
“The Poppies of Flanders’s Fields 1914”….painted to look like he’d just come from the trenches ,walking across a field at Flanders ….May They all “Rest In Peace”.
Wow, Currently i have some of these figures in my collection and my grandson loves playing with them. Thank you for all the Good memories, RIP.
I’ve since found out that it was felix’s girlfriend kitty that I had repaired and painted up as Felix 🤷♂️👀…I wondered why it was undercoated in white ….oh !well it’s just a paint job …and looks a whole lot better than it did …for a 100 year old model cat 🐈⬛
Currently putting together a set of knights and knaves for a youngster, as they are under 7 years old it'll be 1:32, there is nothing of this quality available today, all I could find for the knights were some rather Asiatic chaps with unlikely looking weapons, for the civies I was able to use some sci-fi figures with modifications.

Hi what does promo -sm
This felix was probably painted white with yellow eyes 👀 by its former owner many years ago …I’ve painted back to its original look …made by pixy Kew in the 1920’s hollow cast …the base was replaced by a melted down un repairable lead soldier from around the same period …the rest was re sculpted with super glue and epoxy resin …
Well done, evocative and superb diorama!
I remember these here in the uk, i remember the cowboys and the civil war soldiers had little neckerchiefs that got lost all the time.
My brother has the knights versions had them for over 60years
Any yellow blanketed ones very collectible ,cheers !
Don this is absolutely awesome! Outstanding sir!!
Thank you Duncan 👍🏻
I had the Herlad figures and am fortunate to still have all the Swoppets I got in the 60's. The knights are the best toy soldiers ever made.
Agreed…made by the late great Roy Selwyn Smith ….who in turn got a lot of his ideas from Richard Courtenay ….if you can get hold of Peter Greenhill’s book “Heraldic Miniature Knights “…you will see how he was influenced….great book !
This is scratch built 35mm scale … inspired by the great Andreas kit which is slightly larger 54mm and a white metal kit … there is still more to do but waiting for the hotter weather to work on it out side
Thank you for this. It brought back so many happy memories of Swoppets from when I was about 10 years old in the late 1950s. I would travel by bus to Hamleys in Beckenham High Street on a Saturday to spend my pocket money on a Knight, foot soldier, cowboy etc. I was enchanted by the removable swords, pistols, daggers, etc. I was so lucky to grow up during a time of seismic changes in popular music and fashion and to have such wonderful toys, a wonderful period.
My dad bought my first cowboy swoppets , when I was in hospital having my appendix out …I was 8 …so it would of been 1962 ". I took advantage of my situation, to ask for some …having seen some first round my late cousins house …like you it was instant love for these little characters….the inventer Roy Selwyn Smith May he rest in peace ….made a lot kids very happy …great memories 🙏🫶
@@donwilsmore3945 When I was about 15 years old I decided I was too old for toys so I gave to my nephew my toy Winchester lever action rifle, cowboy pistols and holster, Triang railway, Swoppets and other toy soldiers. I also bought the Winchester rifle at Hamleys in Beckenham. I think it cost something like thirty shillings (£1.50). It took me ages to save up to buy it. In the end I borrowed some money from my mum as an adnvance on my pocket money as I couldn't wait any longer to buy it. It was amazing true to life model, not like some which bore no resemblance to the real thing. It was quite fragile so I was extra careful with it but my adult brother in law broke the part that cocked the hammer and ejected the plastic cartridge. I am tempted now to buy some Swoppets as they are so iconic but I'm not sure what I would do with them🙂
@@Elbowendj …I have a large collection of toy and model soldiers .. a lifetime’s hobby, mostly in display cabinets… the swoppets are very collectible.. 👍🏻👀
I added your video to my playlist of crusaders and swoppets. So, it will reach more people.
Thank you for doing that …❤
This is a great informative material, I don't know why it doesn't have more views. But here is your first like and I am going to share your video with the collector community. I liked the edition and thank you for this content. Greetings.
Thanks for your comments ✋🏼5️⃣🙏
You can't beat the early Britains figures ! I got some Swoppet cowboys for Christmas when I was a kid, and a set of Herald Civil War Union Infantry ! Thanks for showing your video.
First time I saw any heralds and swoppets was at my late cousins house…he had them all layed out on his living room carpet …it was instant ❤….which has lasted throughout my life ..Cheers 🙏
So I bought a 2nd hand model of a French Carabinier 1805 on line …but with no ‘orse ‘…so I found a suitable bare ‘ orse ‘…but with no saddle …this is my second attempt…the other will be kept for another project…I’d built it on the wrong ‘orse’…too thin !…I do love a problem…the main parts of the saddle were built with a mixture of epoxy putties ,but the vandyke edging ( wolves Teeth)was cut out of thin lead strip which had an adhesive backing but I still dabbed some glue to make sure it stayed in place .
This wagon is based on the great ‘Andrea Miniatures US Calvary supply wagon but in a slightly smaller scale of 1/35…which in turn was based on the John Ford westerns ..Apache, she wears a yellow Ribbon, and Rio grande …starring John Wayne …I scratch built it with lolly sticks , coffee stirrers, different types of modelling putties…cane from the garden to make the hoops for the wagons cover …+ some wheels and frame work from an incomplete Phoenix miniatures coach …bought off of e bay for about £10 …which actually made me realise I would be working in 1/35 scale for a robust Calvary wagon …this is part 1
Quicksilver was in a sorry state …lead rot had set in ,his paint work was all but gone ..plus he’d been repaired before with a piece of wood supporting his neck to his body…and even after I’d almost finished I had to re-pin one of his legs ..even so he was fun to work on and restore to his former glory…a very hard to find toy from the 1950’s …to seal him I undercoat with a mix of enamel paint and gloss varnish…to stop the lead rot …always Handle lead with care and wear a mask 😷 and wash your hands …any rubbing down I do on a garden table in the open air …once he’s sealed he can be over painted in paints of your choice …for him I used more enamels
Brilliant tiny diorama . Excellent paint job with these 2 confederates infantrymen . The ground details look great as well . Glad to discover your work . Subscribed .
Many thanks !
@@donwilsmore3945 You are welcome .
I saw you put RIP on a Dave Welsh animation video. Did he pass away?
Yes ...I’m afraid so Tony ,his funeral was last week
These swoppets were designed and made for Britain’s by the late great Roy Selwyn Smith ....the brightness of the rare yellow blanket is possibly because he with two other rare yellow blanketed horses were lost in a cellar and only came to light when the cellar was cleared out recently...two of the rare yellow ones went to a collector in Austria...the other is in this video...found in Worcestershire
Polperro ....The Warren ...& Daisy Cottage ..October 2019
Stayed in Daisy Cottage in June 2012 and had to leave well before our hol was due to end because it was extremely damp inside! It doesn't look any different seven years on!
Rob Dee ...These old cottages are built into the cliff ...and I think damp is just part of it ...having said that the new owners have just done it up ...not sure if they were able to do anything about the Damp though ...that was our 3rd visit to this same cottage....possibly our last so it was good to keep a record of it .
Absolutely lovely - what a good advert for Daisy Cottage and Polperro x
Thanks Luke !
Don great cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps!
