Billy talks at length about music and show business and has some strong opinions about rock and roll, women playing drums and saxophones and people clapping on one and three. He was also a Dodgers baseball fan and mentions some of the Minnesota Twins as his friends at th...

By request I'm posting part 2 of the interview Leigh did with Billy Eckstine. The sound quality is pretty bad and it gets cut short but there are some interesting comments and a tirade about the state of Top 40 music.

Leigh has a nice conversation with Junior Cook when Junior was playing at the Artists' Quarter in Minneapolis. Leigh reminisces about meeting Junior at the Palm Cafe in NYC and Junior talks about getting started in his career and playing with Dizzy Gillespie before he went with Horace Silver. Junior also tells Leigh about how he got a gig teaching at Berklee College in Boston.

Leigh took his microphone to a place called the Bronco Bar in the Minneapolis suburb Chanhassen on April 22 1976 and talked to members of the band. There's a review by Michael Anthony of the gig in the Minneapolis Tribune of April 24th.
Excellent discussion.
Interesting to hear that he wasn’t too keen on billie holidays singing. The recordings they made together are so wonderful
Red was a Treasure! May his magnificent Spirit 🙏 rest peacefully knowing how beloved he was. His friend and admirer always..Vaughn 🎺
One of the most thoughtful interviews with any musician that I've ever heard. Thanks much!
I loved Leigh’s broadcasts and even crossed paths a time or too. I grew up on Lake Minnetonka and later, Hopkins and even Loring Park. I was there in the audience to hear Benny Carter in St Paul and then Tal Farlow in Mpls, and so was Leigh with terrific interviews we can still hear today ! Love Leigh!
I listened to jazzbeaux as a kid in San Francisco. When i moved to Minneapolis in the early 1980's i got turned on to Leigh Kamman who reminded me somewhat of jazzbeaux, although a Midwest version of him. He did a show on Saturday nights in Minnesota (?) and played good music. That's how i learned about the wolverines, through listening to Leigh. Ill thank my late friend Paul Emond of Minneapolis who turned me on to him. I would try to explain jazzbeaux to my friend, but my description never landed. One had to have heard him back in the day. Now I'm hearing the two of them having a conversation now knowing they knew each other and were friends. Everything comes around doesn't it?
Another good one with BE. Great thanks.
Amazing document! Thank you so much! The unsung Hero. If there is a player that you can hear honestity and humbleness in every note, that is Charlie Rouse
Make America great again. The greatest guitarist of all time yet woke rolling stone magazine puts Joni Mitchell number 9 on the best guitarist of all time list. What a fucking joke. Joe pass should have been there at least. Listen to the eloquence and humility on display here, that is all gone now, we’re stuck with classless musicians with snobby entitlement and trust funds that payed for their fancy degrees in “jazz studies” yet they all do 3 years playing in bars then quit and start making crappy electronic music
👍🏾👍🏾
Thanks for this Brad. Keep it up!
Where's he play now
Great to hear B speak
This is great. Where’s part 2?
It's worse sound quality but I'll put it up in a few days.
Thankyou it’s very interesting.
What a Gem I remember attending a series of lectures held at the old Guthrie Theater were these two gentlemen talked for an hour or two. Fascinating
Unfortunate that they cut him off while he was talking

Recommended reading:"3 Shades of Blue" by James Kaplan. This book chronicles the entire life and career of three key figures from the Kind of Blue album:Miles Davis,John Coltrane, and Bill Evans.
I read it a month ago. Pretty good book - a lot of details I was unaware of although I've been into them for 50 years.
What a treat to have Leigh Kamman back in my life for a few minutes. This takes me back to some cozy winter nights long ago.
The wit in Pepper's answers mirror that of his playing. This was truly a great find!
I miss listening to the Jazz Image….😢
Love this so much! Thanks for posting. Chris seems like the coolest hang!
Thank you for posting these. They bring back core memories from my childhood listening with my dad in our living room.
Leigh Kamman's Jazz Image was my education in jazz every Saturday night starting in college.
Great to hear Junior!
He was so sincere and articulate
What a treasure.
This was recorded between sets at the old Dakota in St Paul. Emily invited me to be present since I had the good fortune to accompany her at a clinic earlier that day. Such a delight to hear this today! So brilliant yet down to earth!
So great hearing from Junior, such a incredible talent
Thank you! So awesome to be able to hear Junior Cook in his own words and voice. I am completing the first biography of Cook’s life and career. This info and insight into his life is priceless!
It's my great pleasure to preserve these important conversations Leigh Kamman created with the masters on the internet. If you haven't heard it, I put another interview with Junior from 1988 on our channel some years ago. Check it out.
Will this be put out in book format, I would love to check it out
Beautiful voices of love!
OMG, hearing that rotary dial brings back many memories, from trying to call into radio contests, to buying my first phone from Bell.
Jazz Central just sent me a link to this page...and I subscribed! Leigh's daughter, Kate, runs THE LEIGH KAMMAN LEGACY PROJECT, and introduced me to him back in 1971 !! Being a newbie to Minnesota, I had NO IDEA who he was...MUCH to my own detriment. THANK-YOU Kate, for providing us with such great insight to a great broadcaster & jazz aficionado ! His historical interviews truly withstand the test of time... pax- Gregg Kubera/Hyperopic
That pic is post 1987
Thanks - I know. I can't match dates of the conversations with the images. I just use what I can find on the net along with archival photos of Leigh Kamman.
@@TheLeighKammanLegacyProject still great interview Brian was featured on Rich At the Top which got a lot of watches in PBS
Thanks for the video
The warmth of Thad's personality matched that of the sound of his horn.A delightful interview.
Jackie McLean 1960 pt 1 - this implies a pt 2 exists. Is that so?
Based on the typical "thank you" type endings on most of the interviews - but not on this one - it seemed that there must be a part 2. But it has not surfaced and now that I've finished digitizing all of the 7" reels n the archive like the one this was on I don't think part 2 exists. Thanks for listening.
Bobby left us way too early. I love this guy. He liked my songs...and his were in another world. Boy could he swing...and move his fingers? Great guy gone to early. RIP Brother...
This is Leigh at his best!
This is fantastic! Such an amazing musician and person. Thank you for posting this!
