Switching Lanes – Beyond the Jersey with UNC Swim & Dive's Greer Pattison
“I was months away from signing to swim for North Carolina, and one day I woke up and that reality was stripped from me immediately.”
In June 2020, Greer Pattison, a junior on the UNC Swim and Dive team, was one of the 0.00001% of people to be diagnosed with Guillain-Barré. As a rare, autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack the nerves, Guillain-Barré is difficult to catch and extremely challenging to recover from.
After many hospital visits, misdiagnoses, and intense procedures, Greer was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré. This diagnosis changed not only her life, but also her outlook on it. In “Switching Lanes,” she speaks about the ways this experience reframed her mindset around gratitude, being an athlete, and perseverance.
It is an incredibly powerful piece, and we are so honored to help Greer share it.
Greer, we are cheering you on always!

Ironically, this has been a major problem with student athletes in the US who are one and done. Most often they can't cope handling all that money and fame. While it may be different for men and women pro contracts, the message is still the same. Most top athletes in the US are either married at a young age or party. I am glad these women are both international players and starters in their respective clubs.
