2024 BC Forest Discovery Centre Christmas Express: Hillcrest Shay #1 Return to Steam!
Hillcrest Shay #1 spent 25 years out of service following her last operation season in 1998. After an 8 year restoration completed by staff and volunteers of the BC Forest Discovery Centre, the Shay returned to service in time for the 2024 operation season. The locomotive truly stretched her legs during the 2024 Christmas Express, with 18 days of operation over three and a half weeks to close out her first season back in service. Enjoy!

1915 Class B 35 ton Climax locomotive
Переглядів 1,1 тис.2 роки тому
This locomotive ended operation working in the Mesachie Lake area in 1968. It was restored to operation by museum staff and volunteers for RailFair 91 in Sacramento California, and continued to operate on special occasions until 1996. Although a more primitive design, it’s interesting to note this Climax has a cross compound air compressor, as this was not common on locomotives this size. This ...

This Shay is an example of the most advanced Shay designs prior to the Willamette locomotive and the Pacific Coast Shay . Features to this locomotive include a cast girder frame, casted trucks, superheater tubes, and enclosed steel cab. Original this locomotive worked for Mayo Lumber Company in the Paldi area-just East of Lake Cowichan. In from 1993-1995, it was restored for operation on the Ke...

Would love for someone to fully restore this climax to operation since railfair 91
That's Right
I lived in Langford for 7 years and would always see this Museum whenever we would go up-island, never did go into it though. Moved away fairly recently as well but I guess I'll have to take a trip back one summer to take a look-see again. Good stuff!
Definitely come for a visit on a summer weekend and you can ride behind the Shay in person!
Very nicely done. I love all the sounds, especially the whistle when it was light-engine.
Thank you Mike, I thought it sounded great as well.
She's absolutely gorgeous, I can only imagine the immense pride and joy the people who restored her must've felt seeing her steam and hearing her whistle for the first time in three years
@@soundwavesuperior7522 thanks. Not a rebuild, just an extensive inspection.
Nicely done.
A good repair BUTT I would have heated it in a gas forge low red temp and used Nickle Bronze . thanks
Hopefully #25 will not be gone too long! Is the Shay build still happening?
Yes. It is hoped it will be back in service sometime this year
@@steam_maniac7553 awesome.
The very same locomotive that starred in The Journey of Natty Gann (1985), pulling a freight train.... ahhh childhood memories 🙂 a beautiful engine indeed 🚂 Thankyou for positing this 😊 Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks for the comment. I’ve been told this locomotive has been in many movies throughout the years
what steam whistle did the locomotive have at railfan?
Nathan 5 chime whistle was used for Railfair 91.
Gosh I hope they can bring it back. I understand the significance of the Shay, but Sampson was my childhood friend back in the '70's.
Thank you for sharing your experiences with the engine. The locomotive has been very popular with everyone who’s experienced it.
Is the engine going out of service for a rebuild or retirement?
Yes it is in need of a rebuild
Gotcha thx
A lovely and fitting tribute to a much loved steam locomotive. Thanks for all of your work on this, both the locomotive and the video.
Great video thanks for it. Make another one this year!
Hi Tom! Thank you so much for the positive feedback. I may put up a short video this year but it won’t this extensive. If you want some great Christmas footage this year, be sure to go check out LowLightMike’s UA-cam channel below! He has much better recording devices at his arsenal than I do and produces exceptional work. youtube.com/@LowLightMike?feature=shared
Wow sweet deal you have being on the crew. I believe I bought the instructions to build #25 out of lego. Any word on when the shay will be running again?
@@tomtwiss8506 I can’t say for sure when the Shay will be done. It’s getting close, but in typical steam locomotive rebuild fashion, it will be done when it’s done. Hopefully sometime in 2024.
Hi Tom. I take back my words. New video up!
is that fir the shay ?
It came off the Shay
Really
That is a sweet sound.
That’s what it’s all about!
Thanks for this, great to see.
Very cool, thank you for sharing!

This is a great audio recording. I know she's converted to oil, but I don't understand what happened under the grates at 7:02

@@steam_maniac7553 ah, that's fun, she definitely sounded the part
Wow, that is some nice scenery that the 3716 runs through, especially that final scene. Bravo !
Thanks for this video. Do you know when the #9 will likely be pulled outside for the 2023 display season?
Probably about June is my guess. When it's warm and dry

This isn't B-Roll Leftovers at all. This video is the real-deal main feature. Wow, I'm still smiling big as I watch this excellence.
9 months later, and I'm still loving this.
This video is so excellent. What a pleasure to watch and enjoy. I appreciate the amount of time you've given to showing the various angles, allowing the viewer to really get immersed in the rhythm of the sound and movement.
Great video - I hear the whistle near the hospital - So nice to hear it back this Dec- Thanks
The steam whistle sure carries-sound from a bygone era
Hey Nolan, I finally watched it. Well done, good sir :)
That locomotive looks similar to Jeddo Coal Co. #85, except it has a tender and different track gauge.
If it weren't for this engine I don't think the turnout would be much at all.
It's my understanding that this locomotive last operated under its own power back in the early 90's. Looks like it's been pretty well cared for. WHO would know exactly what it would take to restore this beautiful specimen back to operating condition?? I'm getting involved with funding for worthwhile restoration projects. As a lifelong rail enthusiast, any contact info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Hi Tom. I’m sorry it took me so long to look at this message. Thanks for your interest.
This locomotive is on the grounds of the BC Forest Discovery Centre on Vancouver Island. They run a steam railway and you can always donate at bcforestdiscoverycentre.com
Glad to see she sleeps indoors!
Location? Somewhere in Canada....
Would prefer it be under its own power. Gorgeous!!!
Thanks for this, Nolan.
There's more coming. I'm going to try and post some of the behind the scenes stuff that people don't normally see to give them a better understanding of these machines.
