It's all well and good to teach them how to make a bed, but stealing from clients is rampant and these people need to be given a very strict talking to about ethics. How many hours is devoted to ethics and laws in your classes? About 90% of the aids I've had over the past 3 years have come in late, left early, and want to pick and choose their job duties, have lied, stay glued to their phone and are not paying attention during a shift, and had an attitude. Two of them helped themselves to my debit card without permission (the last of which made harassing calls to my house after I reported it to the agency), I have had one alcoholic who was grouchy and hung over each day and fell asleep on the job, and one who was violating HIPPA regulations by posting client's pictures on her Facebook page including taking selfies in every room of my home, called men on dating sites while on the clock, and stole food out of my refrigerator. Most of these people had other sources of income besides what they made from the agency so they made about 3 times what my income is on my disability check. Stealing from an elderly and/or disabled person not only is a felony in the state of Georgia, but morally it's about the lowest thing one could do in this position. It would really help if they were heavily pre-screened before they were even accepted into a certification program, as some are not fit emotionally for this kind of work. They should be required to take a psych exam geared toward looking at their work ethic, ability to empathize, maturity, and their sense of right and wrong. Those who show poor judgment, lack of impulse control, or antisocial/sociopathic and/or narcissistic tendencies should be considered unfit for the field and not accepted into training, much less licensing. We have a serious problem nationwide with aids who abuse, neglect, or exploit their clients and something serious needs to be done to correct this problem. Medicaid does not seem to care that they are paying people for substandard performance; they notate it and then it sits in a file, so the industry really needs to clean up this mess. I have a background in patient advocacy, so I know abuse when I see it, but many clients might not even report it or realize it until it get's dangerous. For every client or family member who reports a violation, you can bet there are 10 more who don't (or can't due to their level of disability or because of intimidation and lack of back-up).
