Knitting | Increasing Purl Stitches using the (M1P),( M1RP) , & (M1LP) ,
In this video, you will learn how to perform a purl stitch increase call the M1P (Make 1 Purl). All increase stitches lean off to a direction which helps create shape and a "specific" look to your knitted piece, so when a pattern calls for you to M1P, we show you how to determine if you need to make that M1P as a M1RP (Make 1 Right Leaning Purl) or a M1LP (Make 1 Left Leaning Purl).
Here's a little cheat sheet that you can write down so you don't have to refer to the video while you're knitting your project:
M1RP: pick ladder up from BACK TO FRONT & THEN PURL THROUGH FRONT.
M1LP: pick ladder up from FRONT TO BACK & THEN PURL THROUGH BACK.
If you need to learn how to increase stitches on the KNIT side of your work, check out our video on How To Increase Knit Stitches using the M1, M1R (Make 1 Right) and the M1L (Make 1 Left).

Love this! Surprised I was able to get it on the first try. 😁
So helpful! Thank you!
Is this the same for and collar in 2x1?
Amazing! I had watched so many videos of this technique and was beginning to think I was stupid and/or yarn-dyslexic! Your method of explanation has made it suddenly so do-able! Thank you.
I love the details and repeats for practicing. I am downloading this video for future use. THANK YOU!!! This is one of the best tutorials.
This video is the best! I used it on toe up socks and it's wonderful. I worked it right along with you! Thank you so much for a wonderful tutorial.
It took me several tries, but this was the perfect technique. I cannot thank you enough. Best wishes. ❤
I stan a cinematic knitter. I can’t believe I’ve found my people. 🥹
I've just watched several videos about this technique and this is the only one that made sense to me. Thanks for such clear instructions!
Thank you so much for this video ❤
With this one, I realized that I have to "turn" my purls first so the first "leg" of the purls comes in front. Then I can follow up the instructions on the video. Otherwise is a mess. This depends on the way you knit the purls).
Yea, that's amazing. Your clarity and verbal directions are a win. Thanks soo much.
Too complicated for me
Thank you so much!! Your video is very helpful to understand how this is done. Thanks again
Thank you soo much. I had to watch this over and over to understand, but your instructions are amazing! A lovely voice, calm nature... thanks again!
Thanks, this was fantastic
Thank you soooo much for this clear, concise tutorial. This is exactly what I needed to do the sleeve cuffs on my sweater!!!
PLEASE never delete this video. This is the simplest, most digestible explanation I’ve seen for this bind off method. I used this method to do a 2x2 bind off on a sweater hem to match a 2x2 tubular cast on neckline and it worked very well! All it took was a little experimenting with my bind off tension and I was able to get an edge that gave a very nice ‘rolled over’ effect.
This was such a clear explanation of the bind-off... and thanks for the "pattern" or sequence - this helped so much! I've watched multiple videos on the 2x2 tubular bind off, and this was by far the clearest example! Continue with your helpful content! Thanks!
Such a helpful tutorial, thank you so much. So easy to follow. Im delighted with my results. And the on-screen written instruction is a brilliant idea 😊
So glad it was helpful!
As with all the. comments below, I totally agree. I was so confused by the other tutorials and finally I found you, a treasure!! Your tutorial was excellent! You were repetitious and the instructions on the screen were so helpful. You were concise, your words were clear and audible. Thank you.
You are so welcome! So happy I was able to create a video that helps you understand this technique, it's such a beautiful bind-off method!
is this also called long tail tubular bind of?
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I was wondering if you have any tips for when the bind off doesn't start with a Knit Knit Purl Purl, but instead starts with the second knit stitch or even purl stitch.
Hmmm... great question! Since you would be jumping into the bind-off sequence half way through by starting with the Purl stitches, you would have to thing about how those purl stitches need to be "worked" before you bind them off. Test on a smaller piece of work first, and remember every stitch needs to be worked knitwise and purled before it is bound off.
The Best! Thank you. Having done Norwegian purls leaving my purls “backwards” on the needle as I did the ribbing, using this/your method to bind off was especially easy. Again, thank you!
So great to hear!
Very clear thank you
Glad you liked the video!
So clearly explained…thanks!
Great to hear! Thank you! :)
Your explication is clear and the result is beautiful. Yarn is clear enough to show thé process, thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for the feedback!
I can't like this video enough! You saved my sanity with your clear instructions. Thank you!
And I can't like your comment enough! Thank you! Thrilled you found it helpful!
This looks quite messy. I watched a bunch of different tutorials for this and the final result of the process is by far the worst in this one. You can't see the consistent V pattern in this one at all.
Thanks for watching! I appreciate your feedback. I'll work on improving the clarity of the V pattern in future videos by choosing a less bulky sample yarn. Thanks again for your input!
I don’t agree
I think it’s just the yarn used in the tutorial because my bind off looks fine.
Thank you for this tutorial! I wanted to do this bind off so bad and this was the only video I understood from the start 😊 The sequence in the screen was really helpful!
So happy this helped you understand this beautiful bind-off technique!
After watching many tutorials this was the one that helped me understand.
Thrilled to hear this! Thank you!
Same for me!
Thank you for this - I finally understand how to do this!
Yay! That is so great to hear!
Great tutorial, thank you!
Thank you for your feedback! :)
I was going to finally learn how to do it, then I saw how troublesome it was, to finally tell myself "your technique works just fine". This is a great tutorial though. Hats off to you
So happy you found the video helpful! :)
I am a new knitter keen to knit a hat but I have been struggling and cursing with stitches, measurements and wool weights on my learning curve of circular needling...This has shine a light into the dark cloud of despair. Working on a table helps. Thanks.
I'm so happy you found the video helpful!
There is no need to have to push the right hand needle with the left index finger to complete the stitch if you use the right needle as a tool and not a glorified stitch holder. After wrapping the yarn, use the right needle to "scoop" the new stitch off the left needle so you don't have to push with your left finger tip.
This is a lovely way to cast on but I really struggled, I undid the cast on 3 times before I finally got it right 🤦🏼♀️ the set up row I found easier to complete, thank you for your instructions 😊👍🏻
It does get easier the more you do it.... but it is a cast-on style that still requires a fair bit of attention. I need to undo mine every now and then as well! :)
Great tutorial. Nice & slow so that I can understand and see well. Can I use this for my seed stitch project? Thank you!!!
Yes, absolutely It would look great! :)
@@projectweekend9121 Thank you. My cowl is done :-)
Another great how to video! 😊
So glad you liked it! :)
Hi :D New Subscriber and absolutely love your yarn. Can you please share what you are using in this video, thank you. I've recently learned how to knit and enjoying it so much.
Welcome! So happy you're here! I am using a yarn called LOLL. It is a bulky yarn that I developed with a Peruvian Fair Trade Certified mill and is a blend of 35% Superfine Alpaca and 65% Highland Wool. It is so naturally soft (not chemically softened!) and such a joy to knit with. You can see all the colors it comes in on my site projectweekendshop.com as well as the patterns and kits I offer. The needles are Lykke brand needles, which I sell on the site as well. Hope this helps, please let me know if you have any other questions! :)
@@projectweekend9121 Wow! Wonderful - thank you so much I will enjoy visiting your site an perusing your stock. I’m so glad it’s as beautiful to work with as it looks! 💕
Very helpful, thank you 😊
You're most welcome!😊
Thank you for this video! I am just learning to knit and was struggling with holding the yarn to get tension. I can't even explain how I was doing it but it was only 'sort of' working and certainly got hand fatigue. The second method you show here feels so much better! I will be practising using this method from now on as it really feels so much more comfortable.
You are so welcome! And, so happy you found it helpful!
Very well explained and clearly demonstrated thank you 😊
Glad it was helpful!
What size is this circular needle?
Hi! This is a size 7mm needle on a 16" circular cable.
Love your work and aesthetics! Where do you get your tools from?? Needles (flat and circular), markers, and yarn?? They look so natural, would love to use some!
I'm so happy you enjoyed the video! The needles are from Lykke (both flat and circular), and the stitch markers are included in my kits. The yarn is called LOLL and it is a yarn I designed with a Fair Trade Certified mill in Peru. It's a blend of Superfine Alpaca and Highland Wool. It's incredibly soft and such a joy to knit with. You can see all of these products on my site projectweekendshop.com. Happy to answer any more questions if you have some! :)

Needles are way to short to knit English style. Please don't push the point.
Easy peasy lemon squeezy ! I have seen so many videos where people are doing the strangest things with their fingers just to make a slip knot. Finally, someone teaching it the simple / straightforward way. Thanks for taking the time to post this video for everyone 👍🏼 💐
So happy you found the video to be helpful!
Hi, I'm a total beginner to knitting. I've got a kit which is slippers with pom-poms. Just realised I have to make the stitches with 2 strands of yarn, so here I am. I'm using merino wool on 10mm needles. I rolled my skein into cakes so I have both ends of the yarn and am now casting on 🤗 Can I please ask why you are using needles that are actually attached to each other, + what are they called ?!? Also, is there a name for knitting with 2 strands together ? 👍🏼💐
Hi! That's so great you're diving into the world of knitting! Sounds like a fun project you're working on. The needles in the video are called circular knitting needles. They work just the same as straight needles when you knit flat items, but you have the option to also knit items in-the-round with them so you don't have to seam up edges together. I'm starting to use them for all of my knitting projects as they have a shorter profile which is great for storing and for packing along for travelling. Knitting with 2 strands of yarn at the same time is also called Double Stranded Knitting.
I notice you are teaching pushing the point-which is not good- beginners will have sore fingers- avoid pushing the point with pads of fingers.
