When I was a kid, they used to end the laser show with Elvis singing "Glory Glory Halleluah" while the lasers animate the carving and make the generals ride off the mountain. Until recently, the Grand Wizard of the KKK owned most of the town of Stone Mountain and the mountain itself. When I was a kid, we used to sneak into the park after midnight and climb up the trail drunk. The timeshare scam is completely typical, it's always been for sale. It's packed in the summer, you went at the right time of year to see how much of a tourist trap it is.
