Max Reger - Weihnachten - Op. 145, No. 3
In celebration of being halfway to Christmas, I thought I'd post this video from the Curtis organ studio concert last January. This piece is about Christmas and uses 3 chorales as the melodies. Es kommt ein Schiff, geladen, followed by Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her and finally Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht. This piece is also from a set of seven pieces that were not only deeply inspired by Lutheran Chorales but also WW1. Weihnachten in particular was written only 6 months after the famous Christmas truce of 1914. So, it is very likely that this event inspired this piece when considering how most of the piece is quite dark in nature. But through the climax of the piece, we hear Silent Night which of course was sung by troops on both sides on the first Christmas eve of WW1.

Max Reger - Te Deum, Op. 59 No. 12
Переглядів 6297 місяців тому
Te Deum by Max Reger is from a set of 12 pieces for organ. These were written when Reger was Catholic and shortly after the piece was written, he was excommunicated for marrying a protestant. The piece is also an earlier work of Reger's, written just one year after his famous fantasy on Wie Schon and Straf Mich Nicht. This recording is from a live performance at The Curtis Institute of Music in...
J. S. Bach, Trio Sonata No. 1
Переглядів 819Рік тому
Some of the hardest repertoire for organ are the 6 trio sonatas by J.S. Bach. I learned the 1st sonata a few months ago, and got a great opportunity to record it on the beautiful 1987 Schudi organ in the crypt church at the National Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC. This trio sonata changed me as an organist and really made me grow as a musician. The trio sonatas were orig...
Prelude and Fugue in A minor, BWV 543

This piece is one that I think will never leave my fingers. I learned the piece a year ago and it has always remained in my muscle memory. The fugue is famous for its crazy pedal entrances which I think are a lot of fun. Something else less obvious about the fugue is that the subject is written against the meter. A lot of the important notes are on off beats. Bach actually liked to do this from...
Prelude and Fugue in C minor, BWV 546

Before I go back to Baylor for another semester, I thought I'd make one last set of trips to record in Washington DC. This time on what I think is the best organ in town, the 1987 Schudi organ in the crypt of the National Shrine of the Immaculate conception. Hard to compare the organ to others in DC as it is very different, but the organs clarity in what seems like an echo chamber, beautiful vo...

Stars and Stripes forever, but I’m not a theater organist and just fake it

Happy 4th!!! This was recorded on the evening of the 4th so it’s coming out on the 5th. This was after the theater organ concert for the AGO convention in Seattle. Afterwards they let us play around. This is only my second time at a theater organ so I was completely lost and guessed what the generals did but in the spirit of America, I gave it my best for some fun. This organ is a 4 manual, 21 ...
Finale, Rachel Laurin

Although it may not seem like it, this has been the hardest piece I've learned to date. I had to be forced to like it at school, and eventually it worked. So now that I like this piece I will say, this is some of the leading organ repertoire of the 21st century. This piece is standalone, it's not a finale to a symphony or suite, it's supposed to be used at the end of a mass, service, recital et...
Elegie, Augustin Barie

This short but beautiful piece was written by a relatively unknown composer Augustin Barie. He was blind and studied under Louis Vierne before going to the Paris Conservatory to study under Guilmant. Barie also had very large hands. You'll know this right away if you watch the first chord of this piece as it contains a 10th in the left hand as well as several other intervals larger than an octa...

This video is the second half (last for movements) of Nicolas Clerambault's Suite du Premier Ton. This is a French Baroque piece that I enjoyed a lot. This was recorded on the Letourneau organ in the organ studio at Baylor. (Which also has a nice cromorne for this type of music)

A revisit. It is a powerful piece of music. Nothing like the French symphonic works for power and intricasy. Nice to see you without music. Too many of the new generation are too lazy to put the music in the head. They rather play notes from paper. You are good, Andy. You play well, very well.

A truly fine performance, Andy - thank you for uploading! As a Brit, I have (for several years now) been a weekly viewer of Mass from The Basilica of The National Shrine in Washington DC. Apart from the three resident organists (Dr Peter, Benjamin and Andrew) - who are all, obviously, excellent - I came across an amazing organ postlude on 13 February 2022 (of the Allegro from Widor's 6th Organ Symphony) by a completely unknown organist. After sending an email to the Associate Director of Music, I learned that the performer in question was Adam Chlebek (a then student at Oberlin). I just wondered if your paths had ever crossed? He was scheduled to give an organ recital in the Upper Church at 6.00 p.m. this evening - were you able to be there? All best wishes, Tony (UK,)

Very very good. But be carefull with the tempo. Many organists play Bach's works very very fast and hereby looses the transparency of his works.

As you rightly intimate, Andy, the unique group of six Trio Sonatas presents the most technically demanding, esoterically ecstatic and dazzlingly radiant of all the music JSB wrote for the organ. Commentators are universally agreed in praising the variety of their moods, their poetic nuances, their dynamic energy, their elegance and their richness. The first recording I heard of yours some time ago on UA-cam was a performance of the Widor Toccata, and I thought then that you would be a most interesting young organist to follow and watch mature and blossom into a very fine musician. And this upload is a clear pointer as to how far you have journeyed in such a relatively short time! I can now sense more readily your emotional connection with the music you play and your artistry is now well within the range of awesome! I'm sure you worked very hard on mastering every element needed to make for a perfect performance here - which I don't believe is always about flawless, mechanical playing, but about when you make tangible the genius that underpins the score. To think that Bach could write music like this - so much more than just an 'exercise' for his son for certain, even if that was the primary motivation. When you recognise that a piece of music has brought about a change in you and helped you sense your own growth as a musician, then you are on the right road and you will be able to access all the possible destinations that lie ahead. What a gift to possess, treasure and nurture! I hope to live long enough to enjoy many of those destinations with you: B R A V O !
