How fast is diffusion across an axon?
The time taken for a molecule to diffuse depends on the distance it has to diffuse. Over very short distances (micrometers), diffusion occurs rapidly, supporting processes in many cells. For axons, which are much larger,
how long does this diffusion take? Is this fast enough to support molecular processes in axons or are other mechanisms needed? Watch here to find out.

Do we need as much food in the next decades as all food produced since the agricultural revolution?
Переглядів 1511 годин тому
The agricultural revolution occurred some 10,000 years ago. Since then, the population of humanity has grown massively. One of the challenges facing humanity today is to ensure reliable food production for the global population of 8 billion people and counting in the face of climate change and other environmental challenges. To put this critical issue into perspective, watch here to see how the...
What is the speed of climate change?
Переглядів 711 годин тому
The Earth is warming at a rate that is faster than almost all other periods in Earth's history. But have you ever thought about what the rate of climate change means in terms of distance moved over time? How quickly do you have to move on average to stay at the same temperature as Earth warms? What are the implications of this for plants and trees which are not very mobile? Watch here to gain a...
What is the maximum height you can climb with the energy from a snack bar?
Переглядів 1411 годин тому
Planning your next climbing trip up a big mountain? How much energy do you need to power yourself as you climb and how many snack bars should you pack for your trip? Watch here to understand how to derive from basic principles the maximum height that you can climb with the energy from a snack bar. (We take no responsibility if you don't pack enough! We recommend packing more than needed anyway ...
How quickly do molecules diffuse across a bacterial cell?
Переглядів 212 годин тому
Diffusion is a key way molecules move around inside cells, enabling metabolic reactions, signalling processes and so on. Because passive diffusion occurs in a random manner, is it slow for a molecule to reach its required location? How does it compare to other steps in signalling cascades for example and does it limit the rate of such processes? Watch here to find out how to simply derive the r...
How many mutations accumulate in a given bacteria cell during an overnight culture?
Переглядів 1012 годин тому
When growing bacteria overnight, the bacteria will replicate their DNA many times over as they grow and divide. Throughout this time, mutations occur due to the imperfect nature of DNA replication. How quickly do such mutations accumulate and is a bacterial cell that you put in at the start of the overnight culture likely to be different at the end? Comparing the error rate of DNA replication t...
How many ants are there in the world?
Переглядів 412 годин тому
Ants are small and everywhere, how can you check whether someone is right or not when they tell you how many ants there are in the world, given the seeming difficulty in measuring this? Watch here to find out how to perform simple sanity checks to validate numbers you hear on day-to-day basis.
What is heavier messenger RNA or the protein it codes for?
Переглядів 812 годин тому
Messenger RNA serves as the blueprint or template for producing proteins in cells. Blueprints are typically much smaller than the structure they represent (e.g. buildings, bridges etc.) at the human scale. Is the same true for cells? Do we need to adjust our intuition when going down to the micro-scale?
How many atoms are in the human body?
Переглядів 512 годин тому
Have you ever thought about how many atoms are inside your body? This seemingly challenging question can be broken down and answered in a simple way. Watch here to find out here.
How quick is transcription of DNA compared to translation of RNA?
Переглядів 612 годин тому
Transcription of DNA into RNA and its subsequent translation into protein are fundamental biological processes that enable cellular function, growth, and development. The speed of transcription and translation governs the rate at which cellular processes can therefore happen. How fast are transcription and translation and is one substantially quicker than another?
What is the total volume of bacteria at the end of an overnight cell culture?
Переглядів 1513 годин тому
When growing bacterial cells overnight for experiments, the bacterial cells divide many times over. What is the final volume of bacterial in the overnight culture and how can you simply calculate this?
What is the concentration of a single molecule inside a bacterial cell?
Переглядів 613 годин тому
Have you ever wondered what the cellular concentration of a molecule means? In this video, we derive a simple rule of thumb to translate between concentration and the absolute number of molecules for a bacterial cell.

I happen to have participated in Prof Ron Milo's Course 'Cell biology by numbers' at the Weizmann institute several years ago. I think it brings a different perspective to biology which really 'lands' high school biology studies and academic studies as well. These numbers are documented on a website bionumbers.hms.harvard.edu/search.aspx take a look

Where does a cell store immaterial behavioral instinct programs? Do all of an animal's cells have the same instincts stored? Can learned habits become instincts? Can instincts be reprogrammed? Does the cell have a brain? Do plant cells contain behavior instincts, ex. Venus Flytrap?
