Love an afternoon tea! I’ve been to a few tea rooms now and it’s always been so much fun + very tasty! I wish more people my age (late 20s) would be down to go, because I get a lot of funny looks when I say I like to have a tea party. 😅 I think they automatically picture that I’m crashing some little kid’s event.

Hi Marie, Thank you for sharing such a heartfelt insight into what choosing to cut contact with a parent or parents feels like- I made a decision to distance myself from both of my parents and I agonized for years about the relationship I wish I had with them. They’ll never be a part of the journey I’m on now to get into SLP grad school, my graduation, or the life milestones of buying a house or getting married. It took mourning and letting go of those expectations for me to move on. Although I knew it was the best decision for my life, it was still so difficult. I’m glad that part of life is learning there’s a community of chosen family that can and will be there for us, and those bonds might be more important than blood.

My district is similar, where we almost always recommend TouchChat and that is what our staff is used to! I think considering the student’s adult models plays a huge role in our recommendations

Omg so many thoughts with the AAC decision making section! I started in peds outpatient and had a very similar mindset that I had to find the “best” device for the child and now I work in the schools and I see that getting buy in and more modeling from the classroom staff is such an important part of implementation and the student’s success with the device. I took a course from the AAC Coach that talks about doing a Specific Language System first approach where you trial one primary language system first (I.e. TouchChat, proloquo2go) that most students in your school use and then if that system works then you use it but if it doesn’t seem the best, then you trial other options. Just another way to look at it. But I love hearing about your perspective, it’s such a niche but important part of the AAC process that I feel like not everyone talks about.

The way you talked about the conference bubble reminds me of the feeling of leaving church camp. It was nice. I am a substitute preschool teacher (sub for leads and assistants). I would like to learn more about assisting students whose primary language isn’t English or are non-verbal for whatever reason.

Slpa here! I often times get torn between our scope of practice regarding behavior. Is it my duty to assist in regulating problematic behavior in and out of the classroom with the students on my caseload? Are we required to interpret communicative intent behind those various behaviors?
