Thriving and Surviving in Nashville: The Artists Journey with Sofie Lynn

Vertical Horizon performed a show at Shaw Air Force Base recently and performing with us that evening was a solo artist named Sofie Lynn. For 90 full minutes she held the crowd in rapture and even in the rain with her own songs, only working in very few covers, and those arranged to fit her truly unique style. Sofie is the definition of a “#Journeyman”, (Journeywoman??!) she is out there crushi...

    Hello. For years, I toured with two pedals ( a chorus and an overdrive, both Boss!), a tuner and a volume pedal. Played stadiums and festivals, no one complained, except, the band I was in, not because of the sound, but because they thought it didn't looked professional, only two pedals! And yes, I had a kick ass amp ! But same story, the band thought it didn't looked professional, just using a combo amp!

    There’s no true right answer but for me it’s always been as few pedals as possible. One thing people rarely talk about with pedals, is we do lose a tiny bit of tone with each pedal added.. and in some cases the actual noise floor.

    this question makes no sense without the information about the musical style you play. traditional jazz players don´t need any pedals, if you do ambient, all this rock´n roll stuff is useless...

    • @TheJourneymanGuitarist
      @TheJourneymanGuitarist 3 дні тому

      As I go through the video, I make it fairly clear that a tuner is the minimal set up, style doesn't play into that. As the video develops, I discuss the styles that I play, and a bit about how each gig required a different set up, and yes, in Porcupine Tree I played a ton of ambient parts and still play some in Vertical Horizon, and for me, doing these gigs for a living, I needed the set ups and even more than demonstrated in the videos.

    Simple question: what kind of pedal mounts do you use? I have seen that you have 2 physical layers of pedals stacked. I’ve been slumming it for decades with cheap solutions. Still have that gigrig v1, so more like your large rig.

I dropped it off at a guitar shop in Nashville and invested another $1K to refurbish neck, pick-ups, hardware + Buzz Feiten Tuning System made all the difference in getting it to stay in tune > OH, AND THE SUSTAIN! Really cool tone with the original mini humbucker in for the neck and EMG HZ 90 in the bridge. I certainly thought about getting one, but I am sitting on a serious amp collection and had just spent a ton of money on a guitar so... wasn't going to happen. I could not justify it. Hell of an amp though!

    In the past 35 years I’ve tried a lot! Big Pedalboard, smaller Boards, Multi FX, Modelers and so on. But when I find myself in a Livesituation back on Stage, the best for me is to keep it silly simple. Guitar, the Controls on the Guitar, a Tuner, Overdrive and Boost. This experience hits me over and over again, every year 😂

    • @TheJourneymanGuitarist
      @TheJourneymanGuitarist 5 днів тому

      Well, I have a soft spot in my heart for both sides of that coin, I am in the position that most of my life has been spent as a user, playing live and recording. There are many pedals, guitars and amps that I would have and collect if I had the means. Most of what I have has a purpose in either a live setting or a recorded setting. I love that collectors collect, I love it if you are playing in your house or at the local pub. So just play, collect, what ever makes all of this work for you... jump in.

      mid 70's Marshall 4x12 in either an isolation box out in the shed or in the drum tracking room across the hall. Both mic'd with a Sennheiser 421 for the guts and a Shure 57 for the rip. I run them into a Vintech Neve style 1073 mic pre, then I go into Pro Tools HD at 96k, buss each mic separately into one recording track, then adjust the volume of each mic to add low end or guts or a little rip to the tone.

    Since ‘06 the brains of my rig has been a piece that both you and Steven Wilson used, the TC Electronic G-System. I’ve tried many other things, but always come back to it. Beautiful internal sounds with the ability to incorporate external pedals, roadworthy cause it’s built like a tank, and full MIDI and relays for external effects and amp channel switching. The only thing on the floor in front of me is the G-System, an expression pedal, and a volume pedal. Incredible flexibility while being tough as nails and quick to setup & tear down for a live gig.

    I remember when you opened for Marillion in Buffalo NY you had an amazing sound that was on fire. Dunno what you were using then but it stayed with me I'll never forget it. I've gone back and forth between modellers and a rather large board I built and ran into a 1x12 Blackstar combo which actually has two clean and two dirty channels by a foot switch. I'm really loving the combination of the natural tube sounds but running an MX5 through the effects loop for all my reverbs, delays, modulations and pitch effects. But watching this has got me interested in exploring the idea of using an overdrive or two before the amp. I have a Boss OD-1, BD-2 and a cheap Behinger Tube Screamer but I'm interested in trying some other stuff and add a boost as well. I'm a big delay freak and like to have a few different flavours. I had a Caitlinbread Adineko which I regret selling but I've been wanting a Carbon Copy for a little while and every video I see people using it I'm always impressed.

    • @TheJourneymanGuitarist
      @TheJourneymanGuitarist 5 днів тому

      Sounds like you have it dialed in, it's a path really, but constantly searching is the way. I would say try a few gain pedal in front of that Blackstar, it's made to take the hit from the pedals and overdrive the front end, same thing I do with my amps.... on the Marillion tour, if it was 2016, I was using my Marshalls with the GigRig G2 and a variety of the pedals that were just in the video... same board, I just swap things in and out as I need them. The core for me would've been the Klon, the King of Tone, and the Diamond Memory Lane and an old Phase 90... There are so many amazing Klon Clones out there, that would be great in front of the Blackstar. I also love the PRS Horsemeat...

    Alex needs to get on tour ASAP. Playing live is what he is born to do…..The pedal market is so over saturated it’s become nauseating. How many variations can they do on 50-60 basic circuit designs? We all need to get out of our bedrooms and start making bands again. Rock is so up the ass of nostalgia now it’s eating itself. Guitarists are just watching fucking pedal videos and arguing over minute differences you cannot even hear in a mix! Almost every album everybody worships from the 70s/80s and 90s are Boss/Roland, MXR and EH! Mix that with Rack units from Lexicon/AMS/TC/Roland/Eventide etc….And the other companies just copied it. Now it’s all just a bunch of guys changing the graphic designs and look pushing out a million versions of the same shit-and it’s a disease at this point.
