John Wesley - The Journeyman Guitarist
United States
Приєднався 21 сер 2009
I am John Wesley, a guitarist and songwriter who has made a career as a professional Musician. On this channel I share insight and lessons learned through my music career journey from the late 70's, into the club scene of the 80's, as I chased the "Big Record Deal" playing 6 nights a week, 4 sets a night, into the 90's touring the world, supporting record deals, until now, as I became a true "Journeyman". Many years as a recording artist with 7 solo studio albums, as a sideman (performing with Vertical Horizon, Porcupine Tree, Big Elf, Fish, Mike Tramp of White Lion, Sister Hazel, Sound of Contact, Steven Wilson solo), and as a studio owner/engineer has taught me many lessons. As I've continued to write, record and perform, "UA-cam University" has helped me learn along the way. Time for me to add to that pool of experience by sharing what I know. There are many paths to a career in music. I hope my insight provides something you can use in your own music career.
This Mark Sampson Era Bad Cat "Hot Cat" AMP Followed Me Home!!!!
There I was minding my own business when this super sexy, Red Sparkle "Hot Cat 30", called me over and...the next thing you know it was living in my house!!! In the early days of my performing with Porcupine Tree, I toured a Red Sparkle Hot Cat 30 all over the world, that was designed and built during the Mark Sampson era. It was an amazing sounding amp and built like a tank.....and gorgeous! Join me 23 years later as I find a Sampson built Hot Cat from the same time period and fall in love with this amazing amp all over again.

What is the importance of this guitar?
It’s the oldest existing Murphy painted “burst”. But there is a deeper story that involves a 40 year friendship and many other friendships and relationships that brought that guitar to life and into my life. The full video in the channel tells those stories.
@TheJourneymanGuitarist Thanks for the reply. I'll check it out.
Was it with or without the neck when they put it under the dumpster? Thanks.
@@MartinNelson-m4f it was a just a body for several years until Tommy Hatcher traded for it and started working on it.
I was playing cricket with my school when I was a kid; they broke the handle of a really nice bat and threw it in the dumpster. I could not bear to see such a beautiful, high dollar bat be thrown aside like that. I rescued it and took it home, hoping to one day have the money to replace the handle. Some years went past and I went to get it fixed. Turns out my brother stole the bat from me while I was several hours away building a career in another town. Not the happy story this Gibson is, but I see similarities. Of course my brother went on to steal over $100k from me and tarnish my name with my family. I haven't spoken to that prick for over 10 years now.
@@michaelking42 wow. What a story. Not the same ending for sure but the same intent. Make something of a discarded item and create something new. Cheers!
@@TheJourneymanGuitarist Yep, make something new alright. Began a pattern of behaviour that took me a long time to decide to just finish any relationship I had with that guy. I'll never talk to him again.
@@michaelking42.. I know exactly how you feel
Tell me the story of this guitar. "It's stolen"
nuh uh it was permanently borrowed
That issue was resolved many years ago and the guitar was issued a Gibson serial number the same as many seconds that came out of the factory in that time period.
I think we've all shoved a body under a dumpster
What a story!
I actually love the grain imperfection between the pots. Makes it even more unique and special. What a great story behind this beautiful labor of love and friendships! -Brent
Hey John, just found your channel. And what a great episode to start with! I love the Bad Cat Hot Cat, and really appreciated the way you and Steve made those Bad Cat's sing. I was fortunate enough to see PT twice in the early 2000's and you guys were amazing live. Great intro on this amp followed by a nice demo. Look forward to seeing and hearing more from you on this channel.
Always been curious about these. Does the big transformer make it stiff to play? That’s been my experience with a lot of large-transformer amps.
The stiffness is more to do with how the power section is designed, not the transformer. This has the tube rectifier option also, so that would not be still it would be saggy if anything. There are other factors but stiffness isnt inherently a characteristic of a big transformer.
Funny how similar our stories are, with the exception of the whole Porcupine Tree gig thing 😅 I had a Sampson-era Hot Cat 30 around 2008 that I had purchased second hand. As things go, I ended up selling it, but that sound stuck with me. Haunted me for years, actually. A couple of weeks ago, I was able to acquire a Sampson-era Hot Cat 30R. So happy to have that sound back. Nothing like it.
Really enjoyed this one. I recently dusted off my black Hot Cat from the same era. I 'm looking at different ways to attenuate or re-amp it because it's so freaking loud. Here is a great demo of this amp ua-cam.com/video/DIiwz--tbmc/v-deo.html.
I think new gear is important for us as guitar players. It inspires us to explore new sounds. Even going back to something we haven't played in a while can give us a new approach to finding a good sound.
You gonna capture it into the Quad Cortex?
I worked for them at that time, excellent amps!!!
You just made my day John. Be blessed :)
I bet the qaud cortex sounds better!!?
I played a BadCat last week and was totally Smoked ... You have to play it to be a believer.. I want a High End BadCat Set Up
Excellent!
Awesome Wes! 👍
"Sparkles" sounds like she could have worked at Mons Venus in the 80s...😊
Might of dated her…. It was the 80s….
I really wondered where the tone for arriving somewhere live came from, absolutely loved it. I prefer the tone from this over the full head cab tone you guys had after 07
Fantastic sounding amp 👏
I know what you mean JW guitars keep following me home it just keeps on happening those darn things won't stop 👏👍🤘
Really great to see this . Was thinking about doing the exact same thing and was going through the same process of looking for a guitar to do so. That Charvel caught my eye too! BTW Afterimage at Bubba Bash '24 was epic.
Excellent!
Nice sunburst!
Thank you!
Wes IS THE MAN! If you don't know his work, you need to spend some time
Thank you !!!

Now!
Great video. I'm in college and I'm saving to buy one of those lerxst loaded pickguards.
Great to see you told this on the series. I remember you telling this long ago over drinks and how emotional it was for you and it was so easy to see how very much it all truly meant to you down to your core
This is the way I discovered
Tremendous way to give back and share the music. Be safe.
Thank you...never enough for our heroes...
Is that Blackwing 602 Box on the rack from Sean Malone?
Well spotted... not that actual box, but I have a couple of 602's from him. I also have a collection of different pencils that he gave me over the years. I thought I would try the new 602's to see if I like them and they are good, not the same as the originals but good. So that box is not from him, but in way, keeps his memory with us...
Awesome guitar. Can we hear it?? Please? 🙏 lol

What immediately struck me was your vocals on Porcupine tree. Incredible harmonies. You are Blessed John. From a 55 year old guitarist who wished he’d sung a lot more.
Thank you so much, greatly appreciated. It took years of work to get there, and it never stops... still working the craft... thanks you again and get singing! Never too late!
Beautiful.
Great story!!! I have the first Custom Shop guitar that Tom built when Gibson gave the keys to the official Custom Shop for the 1993 model year, an R7 Goldtop, which also has aged to perfection. I bought it from a touring guitarist from Mississippi, who convinced himself that an "off the line" Standard would sound just as good and save him a $600 bucks over what he sold me the Goldtop for... Three weeks later he emailed me asking to buy back the guitar for $500 more than I paid, as he was convinced he had made a huge mistake. I turned down the offer, and a subsequent one a little bit higher
Yeah man, Tom worked hard to give all of those guitars something special. It's interesting, because in the video I speak of Russell, he had number three in that same Goldtop series and Kent had number 7! Small world!!!
Dan Erlewine had a video back in the 80's called " Duplicating vintage finishes " , he showed a technique where you spray shellac over the color coat and then spray it with lacquer and then use auto refridgerant to crack the shellac under the lacquer to duplicate an old finish . I had a friend in a guitar repair shop who refinished several old Gibsons that way and you couldn't tell that it was a new finish .
Amazing... I wonder where a few of those guitars are now right???!!!
@@TheJourneymanGuitarist My friend sold a 1967 L5 with the florentine cutaway he refinished to Merle Haggard . Another of the ones he refinished using that technique was a Les Paul that George Gruhn pronounced as an original finish . He was a great guitar repairman and finisher .
Fantastic video. These special guitars are born from special people, no doubt! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Matt!!!!
The Amp looks suspiciously close to a Marshal Silver Jubilee 😂
Hmmm, now that you mention it... IYKYK!!!!
What a Awesome guitar! That’s one folk lore story
Thank you... as that story slowly revealed itself over time, at every turn it was difficult to absorb as even possible... but here it is! again...thank you...
Fantastic instrument. The best guitars are the ones that come with great stories. Not many have a better one than Christine.
Thank you… that is an amazing sentiment. All the best…
What a great story! Thx guys!
Thank you…
1983 they did reissue type with flame tops..very desirable these days..I had one awesome.. way before officially doing reissues
You are correct… it was an amazing series…. I have one that I used as my main guitar in the late 90s and early 2000s. Still have it. Love that guitar.
That was awesome!!!! I was a junior in High School when The movie Christine came out..... Love this story!!!!
Great movie right? Great name for a great guitar from a great movie!
Thats a BURST!
Yeah man… in person… it’s fairly insane. Thank you!
I really love these guitars, this one in particular have two volumes two tones, and just when you think it can’t get any better they added two pickups and guess what… they are humbuckers. 🤦♂️ there is so much new here specially when compare it to any Les Paul ever made, that is mind boggling. Two volume two tones wow! If you build it they might come! Lol
Sometimes all the right hands connect with all the right parts and magic happens. When one of your closest friends brings an instrument like that into your life… and then, you lose that person, it becomes even more special. There are some of us in the playing world that recognize and love that magic. Others simply never will.
Les Paul’s are boring and not special sounding to me. The myth of the Les Paul continues. It literally looks and sounds like every other LP to me with some flaming maple. What am I missing?
I can't make a Gibson sound good. I love the Les Paul look, but in my hands a Gibby sounds <meh>. I sound much better on a Strat, but that doesn't mean a Les Paul isn't a great guitar, it just isn't right for me. You aren't missing anything, you just are not connecting with a Les Paul.
What are you missing? Something rare that only some of us who play appreciate. Sometimes all the right hands connect with all the right parts and magic happens. When one of your closest friends brings an instrument like that into your life… and then, you lose that person, it becomes even more special. There are some of us in the playing world that recognize and love that magic. Others simply never will.
Well stated, Thank you...
I have an '02 R8 that was refinished by Tom at his Guitar Preservation (when he was not at Gibson) . That signature teaburst is stunning, especially in combination with a heavily flamed top.
It is really the dream for some of us isn't it? So happy you have one of his guitars... amazing!
