Another Inventory
Dear Dev Diary
happy new year, an I'm working on another inventory, and its worth it.
It was March of 2024 when I began my journey into the world of Indie Game Dev. Join me as I learn how to make Video Games, with the goal of releasing a game on steam. This is my dev diary, starting with no knowledge of programing, and a little knowledge of blender I am going to make a Game.
Andrew is learning everything. he is learning how to use Godot, write code, and program. He is also learning how to structure a game, figure out what game to make, and trying to not get distracted by new ideas.
I have a proof of concept based on my idea for a first game.
Play the prototype and give helpful feedback

Wrapping presents and vlogging? Killing two birds with one stone man 👍🏽
you got it, gota multi task to get it all done for the Holidays, have a great Christmas
Underneath there's a function that takes some sort of object that describes which key was pressed. You just need to read the controller and make an object that spoofs the key object with the corresponding key and pass that along to that function. If the key is read inside the same function that executes the inventory change, then start by breaking out the keycheck into its own function. You're doing great.
cool, thanks for the advise . if i get what your saying, have a function to interact with interactable objects but then put a key term on interactable objects to be picked up. when the button is pressed to interact with objects check if it has the key term. if true, pick up.
@@CatskullgamesI think we're on the same page. Basically figure out how it works with the keyboard and spoof that with the controller. It's probably just a string like 'RIGHT_ARROW', or maybe one inside of an object, so when you read d-stick right, you pass along the correct string. If the function that reads the keyboard doesn't have single responsibility, start by splitting it out into {string} key_check(). Then make {string} controller_check().
yes, GDScript uses different syntax but I get it, that is so cool. thanks
nah. portal doesn't yet it's regarded as one of the best puzzle games ever
Sick vid
thanks
Oops
Stick with Godot!
Thanks! I like it even more now that I figured out how to start customizing the editor.
Nice Shirt!
keith haring is amazing
HI, thanks for checking out the video! Im trying a bunch of new things with my video format. Please let me know what you think as I continue to try to Improve all the things. Thaks
catskullcraftgames.itch.io/doug-prototype - here it is, be gentle but let me know what's good, and if you have any ideas. Thanks!!
It's a little easier to play on mouse on keyboard, btw.
Thanks I'll give it a try.
Hey all thanks so much for checking out the Video! The game jam was so stressful, but so worth it! I can't wait for the next one.
Nice! I recommend aiming for 100% accuracy at whatever speed that takes and focusing on a consistent tempo of button presses so that you don't make typos like "tihs" or "yuo". Your typing speed will skyrocket as you get more comfortable with it. I first started learning to touch type at around 12 years old, and I despaired of ever reaching the goal of 40 WPM set out by the typing program I was using, so I pretty quickly quit practicing. After about a year of playing multiplayer video games with text chat (mostly Minecraft), I tried the typing test again and was blown away to find that I was getting around 80 WPM with pretty high accuracy. It all came from having to quickly communicate via text and precisely type in-game commands to avoid dying I guess.
your absolutly right, my 100% accuracy is around 20-22 wpm, but I have seen the most gains from slowing down. my inability to touch type has always made me not engage in those kind of multiplayer games now i wish I had jumped into them more!
5 mins later... **copy pastes a code written by a random user018426 on a sketchy website**
Don’t try and teach yourself, follow a tutorial and learn the language beforehand. Trust me it will help you down the road.
Dumb
totally, this is my plan - im doing tutorials in conjunction with building my own game, im watching the cs50 Harvard python course to help understand basic programing, and im started reading "game programming patterns" with the aim to make videos going over each pattern in Godot to help me understand those patterns and how it looks. I would love if you have any more advise. thanks
@@Catskullgames don’t follow tutorials. Tutorial hell will have you unable to do much of anything on your own even if you understand the basics. If you do tutorials make sure that the 10 minute tutorial turns into a 1 hour one. Break down every piece of code and put it in your own comments so that you can read what does what. It’s like following a trail of bread crumbs you have to look real hard to go the right way.
And by comments I mean in your code.
@@Catskullgames also read through the documentation for the engine. If you see code that you don’t understand hold ctrl and press on a code function that is provided by the engine.
No calories in Titanium dioxide
No way, you're using Godot? That's amazing, me too! I am sorry for not saying anything about the video specifically :c
Yeay Godot Users!!
Sorry for the quiet audio.
I did this yesterday and i got a lot slower in my native languafe then in English. I think keyboards are made for English
i think so
you don’t look at the keyboard tho which is good
thanks its so hard to not look!!
your bad!
YES, Im so bad, it is so embarrassing, but I am getting better.
the you is referring to me, I have know Idea
im getting better at videos!

HEY ME!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!
lol
thanks!
Good luck, don't aim too big at the start or your never get anywhere. Build on little wins.
Thanks!
😂😂 seriously? Wtf is this shite 🤣🤣🤣? Have you ever seen a devlog?
this has support for vr? i think that would be a good a idea to play your game in that platform. Keep the good work!
thanks, i never thought about VR, thats a great Idea
