Carp Fishing In Wales - Caerphilly Castle with Nick Hillman
Having fished with jerk baits for over 25 years and caught a large number of pike to 36lb on the method, I can tell you now that's not a very effective way of doing it. Spin stops is such a lazy method and you'll catch far more pike by working the lure with the rod and not the reel. Good luck.
GREAT VID WELL DONE LADS
How many meter are you using on the pole mate ? 🎣
Thanks for all the likes and Subs!
Little tip mate put the pole into sections of 4 before you ship out its a lot lot quicker and easier
With regards the 2 record fish.........most likely those fish never recovered. Arseholes more concerned with themselves and their legacy than the fish itself. Brain damaged through lack of oxygen. I would be absolutely amazed if those 2 fish were ever caught again.
There were a number of recaptures from year to year, so wind your neck in mate and try reading Mammoth Pike by Neville Fickling, as it's well documented in that book. The arsehole is YOU for making such a stupid and uninformed comment.
those 40lb pike werent that long/old so its only because they were putting so many trout in at the time.. also the red spots are from being layed down on the ground/a mat. if u look back those fish looked healthy when u landed them and then all red after weighing. Maybe bring out some proper stuff next time and hurry up a bit they aint no carp u can lay out on the deck for 10 minutes. U need to keep these fish in the water as much as possible. I dont even weigh my pike.. just measure and put them back within 60 seconds, its a lot better for the fish. Also when ur not british its about the length and not the weight only. Also that was 4 seasons mate.. ive caught more/bigger this summer.. and a lot of big zander while doing it.. maybe find some better spots! (and i thought my fishing was hard).
You sound absolutely clueless! The mat is wet prior to resting a fish on them, the fish were handled and released quickly (hence the lack of filming, as the safety of the fish is a priority). Give your head a wobble buddy!
And stop fishing for pike in the summer if you’re preaching about looking after them that’s the worst thing you could do! Joker.
@@owainrees3809 I dont live in the uk, so summer here was not so hot.. maybe over there it was.. I stil wont change my opinion though.. there is a reason al those big pike were caught 1 time and then never seen again. Pike dont handle long weigh/foto sessions that well.. a carp doesnt care at all.. but pike has very delicate skin. If u catch a lot of fish its best to not use a net, never lay a fish down unless u really have to. Ive caught loads of pike this year.. maybe measured 1-2 of them, handlanded and then put them straight back. That way the fish doesnt get damaged. But nice fishing though enjoyed the vid anyways!
@@larsvegas1505 The fish in the cover image was caught 12 months later, bigger and it looked immaculate. There’s a fish which was caught by me at 21lb, 23lb, 26lb three consecutive years in a row and looks absolutely fine. If you’re referring to the historical footage of Carl Garrett, I think it’s fairly obvious pike fishing has moved on since 1988 and yes, the fish were on the bank far too long. Carl’s fish was actually the fish that went on to break the UK record when recaught by Gareth Edwards, again at a bigger size though a year later. You can take a photo and weigh a pike quickly and not kill it, perhaps you should improve your own fish handling skills if you can’t manage that.
I think your net is much to small for the size of the fish, just buy a bigger one 🤣
Fished swim 10 last night didn’t even get a bite going to try again with some of your tips 👍🏻
Fantastic video again buddy :)
absolutely amazing video man, congratulations :) i know its bit late.
Really lovely video, I'm just getting back into it after 11 years or so. Take care mate. Cheers
really enjoyed that video and the care you show to the sport, top tips to boot. Thanks fella
Love watching these vids hate the repetitive music though
Every fish. Must be a 20
How can it be a secret…..we were piking there in the 1990s
It’s not a secret, but it has essentially been forgotten. Only a handful of people now fish there for pike. The trout fishing at llandegfedd is the same. Back in the 90’s and early 2000’s there were over 30 boats out every weekend without fail and a good number of boats would also be out during the weekdays. Now there are only 2-3 people fishing it a week and some weeks there is nobody fishing it.
Would love to see some more of this pal 👍🏼 brilliant content.
Absolutely fantastic. Not very far from me either ( based in Carmarthenshire) but I doubt il ever get to fish there.
They offer day tickets on certain weekdays mate. Check out the Llandegfedd Website
Amazing the classic old trout lakes are now essentially pike fisheries.
Wow 👌
Can u do more fishing videos in cyfarthfa
hi tom another great video many thanks.could you please tell me what the access is like on this stretch i would like to fish for the grayling but my mobility isn't great i take it this is on the caerphilly ticket.thanks again john
Hi John, thank you. Yes this is on the Caerphilly stretch. It’s Bedwas Industrial Estate area. Parking is very good and there is a tarmac footpath adjacent to the river all along this stretch. Access to the river can be a little tricky in places if you have mobility issues, however there are plenty of easily accessible pools and runs for you to fish. A little further down from where we fished in this video, towards the bottom end of the industrial estate, there is better access. If you are willing to walk a few hundred yards downstream from the bottom car park there are some lovely pools that hold a lot of fish. I hope this helps 👍
@@ScaleyJournal thats brilliant mate thanks for taking the time to reply.really enjoy your videos and appreciate you taking the time to make them.all the best john
Just stumbled on to the very well presented channel, thank you Tom. Keep it up, subbed.
Thank you very much. I appreciate the sub. There will be lots more content to come in the next few months 😊
I had the fish in the thumbnail a couple of weeks back.. It's still going strong 👌
Hey Dan, good to hear, well done! how big? She had a weird dent in her side that made it easy to identify if that helps?
@@owainrees3809 thanks mate.. Had her at 30lb 8oz. First thing I noticed was the scar/Dent. Looks a lot bigger than what she weighed!
Clearing. Up
Beautiful place but vastly overstocked, it's impossible to fail, there are so many stock fish it's too easy, it just gets boring, I used to go a lot but now I have started fishing the mountain llyns for wild brownies.
Yeah I must agree. It’s always had a health’s stocking, or at least it has over the 20 years I’ve fished it anyway. However since they started using petrol motors on the boats it seems to be heavily over stocked and as you say, these days it’s hard to fail. Still a beautiful venue nonetheless and a fantastic day out 👍
Its a lovely carp that one. Its a totally different colour to what it was 3yrs ago. But i have 100% had this one. Cracker of a fish. Well done
Life dream to fish it how do you enquire ?
Hi guys. Great videos me and the Mrs enjoy watching them. We are heading up to Ross on wye the 9th of September but don't really know the area. Do you guys recommend any spots to fish that are day ticket? Last time we struggled to find anywhere as we were not familiar with the area..any advice much appreciated. Keep up the great filming. matt
Yeah we both favour Courtfield. It’s a fantastic stretch, part of the Wye and usk foundation. Lots of water to fish and plenty of holding areas for fish. Good parking at the bottom end of the beat also 👌
Yeah got wiped out the same today 🤣
Very good video again tom. Nice to see an angler on our local venues. I've never fished the castle even tho I'm a local like you. Keep up the hard work and the brilliant videos
Amazing footage! absolutely great to watch. Not sure though why Tommy Morgan's 47lbs Lomond pike from 1945 isn't recognised as the UK record? Morgan's fish was taken dead baiting (I believe) but from a wild un-stocked natural loch and not a fishery. Any info welcome. Thanks
Good video mate,I’m currently pre baiting a lake full of Canadaian weed thinking is the chod rig the best way to attack it until my spot is clean ?
Yeah that’s how I approach pretty much all weedy waters until I work the water out in terms of finding/developing spots or working out fish patrol routes where I can try to condition them to feeding in a particular area before fishing it with a more bait and wait approach.
Great video mate, what peg is that?
Cheers, it’s peg 12 mate 👍
@@ScaleyJournal fishing there in a few weeks mate on 10 and 11
Any chance of the names of the lures your using I’m struggling to find some that large Be much appreciated 👍
Mostly use a range of rapala lures and pretty much any trout patterns mate. Try the savage gear line through trout 25cm. They are on the heavy side and require quite strong gear to cast but a great lure and we favour them on trout reservoirs. 👍
Great video guys I went ther in April but blanked will be going back ASAP what's the best bait to use thanks
Cheers mate. To be honest, there isn’t really a best bait to use. Lots of people will tell you different baits but as long as you use a good quality boilie/pellet then you’ll catch 👍
@@ScaleyJournal thanks again mate I'm new to carp fishing and tbh I'm hooked lol
I absolutely love carp fishing, it can be great fun mate! What area are you from?
@@ScaleyJournal port talbot mate
@@pricey81 have you ever heard of Bryn Mill & District Angling Club? If not they have two lovely waters, The Fendrod and The Half Round Ponds. Both are in Swansea and they have some fantastic fishing on offer. I’d highly recommend checking it out if you haven’t already.
Really enjoyed that, iconic venue and some mega footage and pike
what reels do you use ? are they xtds
Yeah, on my 12ft rods I use the shimano XTD’s. Fantastic reels mate. Worth every penny!
Nice ,keep em coming 👌
Good watch Tom just got my baiting pole 👍🏻 rig wise I hear wot ya saying about the Ronnie rig But are u not worried that the suppleness of your rig dropping it from spoon will just land in a heap think for me I’d prefer something that pushes away from lead tight lines mate 👍🏻
No that doesn’t worry me at all mate. I hold the rod in my other hand and feel it down on a straight line. There’s slight swing back when dropping on a straight line and that’s no different to a cast. I’m happy to cast a subtle rig, so I’m happy to drop one with a pole also. I did think the same as you initially, but through using it I found out that it works and I’ve built up confidence in it.
Chew Pug..?
Cracking footage, I’m booked in March , never fished it before, I’m local too, love what you guys are doing 👍
Subbed! How many anglers per boat. Is 3 allowed? Great video
Fair play! I understand the work behind those fish. Iv caught 100s of pike and still waiting for that 20 plus
I'm got a boat booked for March on the pike. Even though its not the same place it used to be, I fly fished it for 20 years until new management messed the trout stocking program up with tiny 1lb trout instead of 2-3lb and over priced season tickets. Resulting in no one fishing it no stocking 🙆♂️
If it’s ever to be anywhere near what it used to be it relies on more trout anglers using the venue and continued monitoring and limitation of the pike fishing. Nowhere near enough anglers using the venue for both species to continue for it to be viable as far as I can tell which is why this video is public.
@@owainrees3809 I live 10min away from their and would now still be fly-fishing their as would all the other regulars if it wasn't so poorly managed. But I would of thought tho that all the course fish in their would sustain the pike but my mate said it is the trout that made them pike so big. The otters in their now don't help aswell
Great video guys 👍 I noticed a fish following and turning away from the lure at 13:27 just before the 32lber, looked a very big fish, not sure if anyone noticed this cause nothing was said about it in the video
Yeah we noticed this too mate, very exiting when we first saw it! We’re confident it was the same fish. We think it was the 32lb fish rhys caught. Looks of a very similar size.
8:00 he didnt fix the corner of the pike's mouth
Yeah that was corrected while the fish was in the water resting, it took a long time to recover and we didn’t notice it straight away. Swam off strong and has been recaught since.
@@owainrees3809 awesome man, i see so many people forgetting that and its killing for the fish. loved your video such a different fishing culture over there with the closed water systems here in the netherlands we dont really have that
Brilliantly done
Thank you 😊
That‘s what pike fishing is all about. Epic venue, epic footage. Well done!
Thank you very much 😊
Absolute epic video, the best pike video I've seen for sure, loved hearing the history of the res and seeing such large pike fighting like that, mental, massive well done to all involved 👏 👍
