I went to a George Shearing concert at New York's Carnegie Hall. The year was perhaps 1960. Shearing's piano playing was not why I was there. I was there to see and hear Armando Peraza because I was learning to play conga drum. I believe I also saw Dandy play bongo with Tito Puente at the Roseland Ballroom a year or so later. I didn't know it was Dandy but I still remember quite clearly the impression the bongolero's use of his left hand on the macho (small bongo drum) made upon me. I don't speak much Spanish but I love the music!
