The Icelandic Christmas Cat (Jólakötturinn - The Yule Cat)
Along with the 13 Icelandic Yule Lads, there is another important Christmas character who must be mentioned. The Christmas Cat (Jólakötturinn -- Yule Cat). This fearsome feline had an important role to play in centuries past and still lives on in today's Icelandic Christmas traditions.
From the earliest days of the Norse settlement in Iceland, Winter was the time of year when wool was spun and new clothes were made and it was traditional for everyone to have new clothes for Christmas.
In fact, traditionally, any child who did not have at least one new item of clothing for Christmas risked being eaten by the dreaded Christmas Cat.
The Icelandic Christmas Cat is no sweet kitteh-- no no-- a dangerous child noshing monster is the Icelandic Christmas Cat. Its origins are murky, but again, predate Christianity.
Some say it is the house cat of the Yule Lads' parents, the mountain-dwelling trolls, Grýla and Leppalúði and that it lives with them in their cave, although this seems to be a rather recent development. But everyone agrees that this is one mean feline and that any person who dares not to have at least one new item of clothing at Christmas, risks being gobbled up alive by the Christmas Cat.
No wonder that to this day, it is de rigeur to have at least one new piece of clothing for Christmas in Iceland.

I find it a disturbing story/legend, but it's moral is good. If you know of poor people who can't afford new clothes, especially children, make sure you give them something warm for Christmas, so you can have a good winter, and good New Year. That part is reminiscent of Good King Wenceslas who took pity on the poor peasant who was shivering and hungry. I see it also as a warning that, just as Scrooge was an evil hoarder, who refused to share the wealth, those who refuse to help the poor, have blood on their hands!

Seems like this cat was invented to keep kids from complaining about the ugly scratchy sweater their grandma would knit for them during the winter.

My cat thinks she is the jol katt She attacked the nisser on my Yule tree. She then attacked the tree itself and knocked it into the floor. Won't leave the ornaments alone . Tonight I heard faint roaring and gurgling growly noises coming from the den. Wtf is that? My cat comes around the corner , dragging the elf on the shelf into the kitchen floor and dropped it at my feet 😂 she.dragged. my .elf. Off. Of. The. Shelf. She doesn't eat children though 😂 lmfao.

That cat sounds less like a monster and more like a personification of death. If you don't have clothes in winter you will freeze to death. And then that cat is there to collect you.

I think of him as the personification of Northern Winter, but otherwise that is correct Make sure your family can stay warm in the frozen season or the devouring cold will come to claim those you love.

Thank you so much for the explanation and English translation. I love this song. Could I please ask about the verse with the English translation: "Some had gotten an apron, and some had gotten shoes, or something that they need - that was all it took"? I just want to know about the line "that was all it took". I assume from the story that this means that the cat left people alone that had gotten these things. Is that correct? I just wanted to make make sure that it doesn't mean that the cat took only the apron and shoes. Thank you so much for the translation. It makes the song so much more enjoyable.

Dear lordandladyg. That's correct conclusion. The Christmas Cat left these families, when the Cat saw they had a new clothing for Christmas. The message from this old Icelandic story are, that everybody should have joy over the Christmas time, even they are poor or rich and encourage everyone for peace and joy despite the circumstances of each individual. Merry Christmas.

I love Yulecat even more than Krampus. Krampus is too darn Christianized, and loses a lot of meaning (because his naughty vs nice is also arbitrary). the Yulecat is a representation of the bitter cold of winter, and he's not evil in the sense of morality, he is a warning that everyone MUST be cared for. The Krampus doesn't tell you how to live better. The Yulecat does...even if it means he goes without a meal.

    • @annablueohanna

yep. Children who are naughty get eaten by the cat's owner, Gryla.

    • @DembaiVT
      @DembaiVT 8 років тому

It's important for two reasons: To teach children to be thankful for ALL their gifts, and the second, so they learn to be concerned for other people who might not be so fortunate. Because the cat is thwarted by ANY gift of clothing, it need not be from family. The idea really being that in Iceland (especially) when the tempurature drops around Yule, someone caught without enough clothing is going to die from exposure. This encourages people to help each other - losing people from your community because you did not give them a hat or mitts? That diminishes the community.

2 Hann lagðist á fátæka fólkið sem fékk enga nýja spjör fyrir jólin - og baslaði og bjó við bágust kjör Frá því tók hann ætið í einu allan þess jólamat og át það svo oftast nær sjálft ef hann gat Því var það, að konurnar kepptust við kamba og vefstól og rokk og prjónuðu litfagran lepp eða lítin sokk Sum höfðe fengið svuntu og sum höfðu fengið skó eða eitthvað, sem þótti þarft en þad var nóg Þvi kisa máti' engan eta sem einhverja flíkina hlaut Hún hvæsti þá heldur ljót og hljóp á braut Hvort enn er hún til, veit ég ekki en aum yrði hennar för ef allir eignuðust næst einhverja spjör Þið hafið nú kannske í huga að hjálpa, ef þörf verður á máske enn finnist einhver börn sem ekkert fá Máske, að leitin að þeim sem líða af ljósskorti heims um ból gefi ykkur góðan dag og gleðileg jól
