The trip to the slaughter house is symbolic of the inevitable march towards death that all humans must travel. The Swallow represents the soul that is freed from worldliness. It's rather fitting that the Tachikoma's, childlike machines without an inate understanding of what a ghost/soul is would not grasp the full allegorical symbolism of the song.

He always had a soft spot for the Tachikoma, going as far as riding the same one and giving it natural oil. Then again, Batou had quite a few soft spots for a great many things... he was often the most expressive character, even without eyes... He took it quite hard that the big little guys got... well, chopped... the season final and beginning of the 2nd gig puts a new spin on things, but you can see how moved he was by them and how happy he was after. I personally love the Tachikoma more than anything on the show. They are the embodiment of the themes and subtext of the show: the meaning of being alive and having a soul. Their conversations are the best thing written on the show: brilliantly cleaver, quite stylish, and yet never masturbatory like the ending of season 1, with the mother of all plot dumps.

Tachikoma may have mentality of little children, but they have knowledge and wisdom of adult, quite philosophical too (meaning of life, etc)

Though it’s not mentioned, the original song points out that valuing freedom is in and of itself a type of freedom, and their passive-aggressive singing implies that they have this, even if they don’t have self-ownership or ghosts. Possibly. They might have ghosts. Which is what makes the scene honestly kind of creepy. Also, you can read additional parallels into the original lyrics, if you wanted to. The song was changed in some releases because Japan doesn’t like to remember war crimes. Have you seen Paranoia Agent? It’s a great anime about their culture of willful and pathological amnesia.

@@ListenToStatic I was just wondering if there was some other direct reference that expands over friendship thing. Also, I wonder if Tachikomas really knew about it. It does appear more likely that they do, but they are innocent and naive enough that there seems a small chance that they didnt do it on purpose. And yeah, parallels in this scenes have way too many layers, its exactly like the end of GITS, Section 9 was sacrificed cause higherups considered them dangerous to their own well being and even among them, only 2 people who were mostly humans were treated properly under the law, like if they are more machine the less they have to be treated as humans. I havent seen Paranoia Agent yet, but I shal definitely give it a try

@@TheVergile True and thats quite messed up. Plus its their growth that is treated with fear. Its a good throwback to GITS movies which is also quite a central theme to GITS series. We are fearful of the sentience in machines cause we are not ready for it. We are insecure about our own humanity.

@@nikgokuhil It is 2024. The development of the machines fascinates us - we connected them to more devices in order to see and witness their expressions. We fear less of the sentience in machines, we fear the silence of the machines.
