Mastering your 30 second resume
A great career story can accelerate growth, yet most struggle to craft one. Even top performers fall short, telling stories that are overly detailed, abstract, jargon-filled, or poorly structured - all of which can lose a listener's interest.
The first 30 seconds are crucial; you need to hook your audience quickly. Think of the beginning of your story as a movie trailer: highlight the most engaging aspects rather than chronologically detailing every event.
This episode focuses on crafting a captivating 30-second introduction to your career story that engages listeners and enhances your professional profile. We've taken a unique approach by inviting Skip community members to submit their career stories for a live workshop. You'll hear real examples of me coaching engineering and product leaders, demonstrating the transformation from initial attempts to polished and punchy narratives.
We also discuss:
• Common storytelling mistakes that everybody makes
• Techniques for weaving a theme into your story
• Effective strategies that will hook listeners
• Adapting your story for various audiences and situations
• Balancing between brevity and showcasing your unique value

    It's important to show humility and empathy during an interview as it provides the interviewer with valuable insights into the product's development stages and its future, all while showcasing your perspectives.

    This is a great addition! I love the idea of different versions for different settings. I usually advise a different type for exec recruiters and VC talent partners who screen on specific things and can tell your story better than you. Then a different for talking to a mission driven founder or peer leader. And another based on a target company to highlight more or less of their stage, need, or value. I do find the 3 career phases approach works well for most to avoid going too deep and lets you name and number drop while still sounding like a human telling a story. This is great!

    Love this! How would you classify a scaled company going through an expansion? So we have PMF with our flagship product (mostly sucking sound, although getting slower), and we are investing in some zero to one areas that are doing the zig zag. So we have established processes, but many times, this doesn't make sense for the new products- so we haven't hit our stride with anything. We also have a large modernization initiative going on to get a platform that can support our existing customers + expansion. All this makes for a super chaotic and disorganized very large organization. Thinking about where I fit, I enjoy the ambiguity of a smaller startup and can work well within the structure of a larger org, but this is the worst of both worlds right now.

    • @theskippodcast
      @theskippodcast Місяць тому

      You describe things here pretty well. I'd simplify things and suggest you have a set of PMs and projects that are focusing on scaling the mature, core business. That would include the re-platforming exercise. Then you have a set of early explorations that ideally would leverage the same customer base, but expand what the company stands for. As you rightfully point out, you can't manage these initiatives the same. They are so very different and the PMs who work on them are probably skilled differently and attracted to solve different problems too. Most companies struggle to administer both styles of projects though, and usually just try and foist the scaled process onto the early stage one, creating an innovator's dilemma situation. My advice is to pick a lane intentionally. But if you are equally skilled, pick the one that has durability. The challenge I see is if the company struggles with expansion, it's very thrashy to be on those projects and you can't really learn much. You want a project where your skills match but also has some semblance of success.

    This episode offers a great perspective & framework on how to evaluate potential opportunities & how to position yourself. It would be great if you could give your take on the the relationship between funding round & stage of company. E.g., I'd assume almost all seed round companies are pre-P/M fit and most series A would be the same. But at what round do we see product-market fit start to materialize? And generally at which funding round would we start to see hypergrowth?

    • @theskippodcast
      @theskippodcast Місяць тому

      Great question. I think it's safe to say that most seed companies are still seeking PMF. After all, the money is used to really fund that exploration. I think once a company has capital, depending on the idea, you might actually see signs of PMF even at Series A. Much depends on how much seed is raised which translates into how much time does the company have to explore. If it's several quarters (or even years), then we'd expect some solid PMF before the next round. But if it's just a bootstrap, then yes Series A might be still be used to find PMF. Usually Series B (or our third round) has some business performance, i.e. a way to drive growth + monetization. And then later rounds only make sense, especially when the dollars are large, if the company is in hypergrowth.

    this is brilliant!! thank you!!! I've been struggling as a Jr PM when I was moved to a PM role that was open. I am very aware of my lack of technical/domain expertise but I'm good at design and couldn't figure out what was not clicking, leadership is also very uptight and anxious since we have a working product that needs to scale. Seems I'm a crafter and a bit of growth PM. I can clearly identify my coworker who is an engineer with domain expertise turned PM and he adds so much value.

    Long time listener, first-time caller. I enjoy your podcast, but this episode is difficult to listen to because of the number of voice-over edits. It's like someone else's voice They audibly sound different from the rest of your spoken words and it takes me out of the stream of thoughts. It makes it hard to follow along. I had to stop and hunt down a place to send this feedback. I listen on Spotify so with audio-only it really stands out. I'm going to give it another try because I really wanted to hear the message.

      Update: I got past it and I enjoyed the episode. I like the video version better, so I'm glad I came here from Spotify. Thank you! P. S. I wanted to mention that the audio problem is not unique. I've faced the problem myself with audio recordings, so I know what you'd have to wrestle with to solve it. Truly thankful for your podcast. Cheers!

      I appreciate this feedback, it's something I'm learning as well. It's a lot easier to leave a conversation between two people largely unedited. But for much of my content, it's me just talking and I want to get the information across pretty efficiently and accurately. So in the earlier episodes, I really worked the audio. I'm getting better at leaving my natural conversation in, but the video gets a bit choppy since I make a bunch of edits. Neverending optimization problem, but with more practice, I suspect it'll be less jarring.

      It's a valid question. I'm not sure I'd go so far as suggest he needs to fail. But he's already seeing a ceiling that is difficult to rise above. That usually causes people to rethink their tactics, hence the reason he even called me to begin with.
