    I feel like Rhubarb is a bit like "finding peace in resignation". It's lamenting, yes, but it's also strangely peaceful. It's like your emotions finding some ground to stand on after crying. And now, we have the orchestrated reversed version, which sounds like the opposite, a continuous rising that, in the end, goes nowhere. Reaching out, but never really soaring. It tries to get up and fly, but it's strained, troubled and there's this underlying feeling that it will never take off. It really is the complementary companion piece to the original.

    It seems that fundamentally a lot of it links to a spatio-temporal representation of notes which represents a deep familiarity with how different chords can create a sense of dissonance, and that isolation is represented through the sense of hope being lost and the isolated frequencies… aphex twin is the king of communicating meaning through form and form through meaning

  • @jbjc3924

    i find it hard to believe aphex twin was thinking about harmonic progression and voice leading when he created this progression, but an interesting perspective nonetheless

    Hi Peter, thank you for such a valuable lesson. Im just a beginner and I have a very specific goal. I want to learn playing synths but Im kinda lost at the moment on what should I practice. There are tons of videos out there on practicing piano (Scale, Hand Coordination Technique, etc), but there's very few to none that focusing on how to play synths. Your Rhubarb video is definitely very inspiring to me! What technique that you think is the most important and usable to be practiced and mastered on my synths journey?

    I’ve seen a lot of theatrical interpretations on UA-cam of Pink Floyd The Wall, I have to say that this one is probably my least favorite having said that, though it does have some really cool moments unfortunately unfortunately not enough of them, I really like how they worked in the dancers in certain spots they probably should’ve used them more Comfortably Numb would’ve been a great spot for the dancers that was kind of a missed opportunity. Another thing out of all the theatrical interpretations that I have found only one in my opinion got the fascist rally bit, right. Also, I do see a lot of comments of people criticizing the singer, I think he’s a good singer just not the right person for a production like this. He definitely struggles with the higher points of the album and also he’s really not much of an actor at least for my perspective. The trial was spot on. They got the characters right and that was amazing to watch. Also, I am so glad that they did not use a movie projector with the animated trial from the Pink Floyd concert and the movie. In conclusion, I will say this is a flawed masterpiece. Attached below is the link to my favorite production of The Wall this is the one I was telling you about where they got the fascist bit, right. ua-cam.com/video/2B0XjkZ4Ceo/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared

      Well, speaking as the barrister in the trial segment, as well as the fellow who produced the backing arrangement for it, I appreciate your compliments very much! I think your assessment is spot on; our production as a whole had some amazing talent but was also hindered by various obstacles, both financial and otherwise. Thank you for being able to look past some of the flaws and enjoying the rest.

On the production it also feels like he's slowly fading the main melody into the countermelody leaving you lost there, until finally hitting you with the main including a hopeful high line.. and then you're back where you started

    It’s worth noting Aphex is very much into “avant- grade” sound artists… which is probably why he tried doing the sleep thing. I’ve always wondered if he’s truly technical about theory or is he simply a born Prodigy. I’d probably go with the latter.

    I get so emotional anytime i see covers of popular electronic/ambient music. People can talk as much shit as they want about electronic production but the fact is these tunes and these chords will live on, wether its in our heads, made on computer, or covered with real instruments they are all beautiful and the meaning remains.

  • @dexters7s8
    @dexters7s8 Рік тому

    How to create this beautiful sound/tone ? I wish one day to have a keyboard, and play this tune, exactly how the album version sounds like

    • @PetersPianoShoppe
      @PetersPianoShoppe Рік тому

      Hi Dexter.... the pad here is just a warm analog pad (nearly every synth or workstation has some patch that's "warm analog pad" or similar) that I put a lowpass eq on and rolled off much of the highs, and then I boosted the mids subtly. This is NOT how the original sounds; on the album, Richard D. James is playing what sounds like a flute sample that's pitched low, so the formant shift is lowered and it has this ghostly quality. There's probably also a pad layered in there, but the breathy flute thing is what really comes through. This digital piano I'm playing here doesn't feature any sampling so I couldn't do that for this video.

    I'm not a musician but closest I can think of is how colour works on the soul. If you look at the colour combinations of Matisse they are quite musical. It is very odd how these elements, sound or colour have some innate correspondence to what we might call moods. You can see the religious element singing and so on in most cultures. I think Itten was exploring these kinds of things in his Bauhaus teachings on form and colour.

    • @PetersPianoShoppe
      @PetersPianoShoppe Рік тому

      Thank you! The emotional part is very important. Theory can be fun to break down and analyze a tune, but we must always remember that notes are written to express an artistic intent, and our emotional reaction to a song may get us closer to that intent than the theory can.

    I am sorry, I don't mean to be rude but I think you completely mix the chord 'functions'. I don't think you can call D major a 6th - it would rather be a 4th, as your tonal centre is rather A major than F# minor (they are strongly related anyway). I have got your point and technically you may be right but you will confuse many people this way. If you call A major a 3rd - this is completely wrong. It is not a 3rd. But as I said - I don't mean to be rude. We all love the same music, don't we? Peace.

    • @PetersPianoShoppe
      @PetersPianoShoppe Рік тому

      That's ok! You hear the tonal center as A major. I hear it as F# minor. As I hear it, the D major is the 6th in the F# minor scale. You can certainly analyze it as a piece in A major if you wish! But my analysis is correct as an F# minor piece.

    • @PiotrstrashcanŚmietnikPiotra
      @PiotrstrashcanŚmietnikPiotra Рік тому

      The reason for that is simple to me: if you start with F# minor, you suddenly don’t have dominant and subdominant in this piece. But if your centre is A major - you do have E major and D major which fall in those categories accordingly. Maybe we’re both right, we just see it differently.
