Hi Joel. Tacking the X-Cat is indeed somewhat tricky. It is quite hard to turn, due to the fact is has no regular daggerboard but a ridge along the whole length of the hull to fullfill that purpose. How to do it: turn the bow towards the wind direction - step to the bow - the boat will then turn further towards the wind until it stops and sligtly move backwards - the wind will fill the foresail from the opposite direction and push it through - meanwhile the rudder (you left by itself) will also turn automatically and while the boat move backwards a little, it will support the turn - while this happens you change to the new windward side and knock over the sheep rope - now the X-Cat moves foreward again, the rudder comes back, grab the helm and of you go! Sounds easy, doesn't it? But thats what I did on the video. Complicated the first time(s) but not that strange if you are used to it. ... and much safer then to jibe in strong winds. Thats also what I prefer to do under normal conditions, even if you lose some height.

No idea. I would estimate the fast parts around have been around 12-13 kts. It's been quite some time ago.

Very clever use of the inspection hatch to flood the hull and even smarter to be able to empty it once it is righted. You could not do that with a catamaran.

This was a quite comfortable situation to practice the capsize to show the steps and procedure in a video. I have no footage from a real capsize, but trained before I managed to do this also under harsh conditions in 2-3 minutes. But I would not go for it, just to demonstrate an emergency case.

Hobies waren an dem Tag auch unterwegs. Bei der Windstärke waren die auch nicht viel schneller. Bei 5 Bft sind wir zu zweit schon über 15kt mit dem Kleinen gefahren. Gemütliches Dümpeln ist das nicht unbedingt und Spass macht es. ... und bis der Hobie aufgebaut ist, hat der X-Cat schon mehrfach den See vermessen. :) Unterschiedliche Konzepte - unterschiedliche Erlebnisse. Einfach mal ausprobieren.
