Help me out here, is it Mahororo? Or, Chipembere? Or neither? Inlearned this piece from Fradreck Mujuru inside Muir Woods one day. A gift indeed. Maitebasa Baba! Tatenda.

Greetings. It's been a long time, my apologies to the Mbira community for my absence. Ndiregerere. I’m starting again with sketches. This is.#001, and I'm searching for the name of this piece. I think a version of Mahororo, but I could be mistaken. Can you help me to identify the piece?
Interview with Chris Mhlanga
Переглядів 603 місяці тому
Chris Mhlanga is a well-known Gwenyambira. He is known for both his unique craftsmanship in making mbira, and his unique virtuoso style of play. Totally inspired, I paid him a visit in 2007. This is an excerpt from an hour long interview I conducted with the elder then. Enjoy, his history is amazing!

Exploration of the piece, concerning expression. It's like jazz to me. Chris Mhlanga once told me at his residence, his greatest passion was jazz music. I hear jazz in all the traditional pieces. Discovery of the origin of jazz is in Ancestor worship. Here, a Shona.

Replacing a Dambatsoko Mbira Key

One key broke on my Dambatsoko Mbira, and I replaced it with a new one. It's my first attempt at making an Mbira key, and after 10 years, it works fine to this day.
Zanza: D'mba Interpretation

I was invited to produce an interpretation of the West African D'mba mask. A headdress to celebrate harvest and female fertility. Research informed the making of this musical interpretation. Many thanks to L'Salaam for collaborating on this special piece for the Baltimore Museum of Art. c.2000

I was invited to produce an interpretation of the West African Senufo Komo Kun mask. A horrible monster that terrorizes young initiates within the culture. Research informed the making of this musical interpretation. Many thanks to L'Salaam for collaborating on this special piece for the Baltimore Museum of Art. c.2000

Hello, years back you had some vids featuring kalimbas you had made. I believe you called them Zanza? I really enjoyed them, they actually helped me realize my main objective with the instrument WAS to improvise and the mbira with it's ingenious key arrangement was designed primarily to play Shona music. So in spite of having spent a number of years learning mbira pieces, thanks to your fine tutorials (which I don't believe have been equaled yet; their organization, clarity and accuracy) I decided to return to the kalimba.) Your instruments which I believe you made, had the element I was looking for, inspiring melody out of rhythm. Do you still have them? Would you consider selling something of a similar nature ? Hopefully I've the right guy here.....regardless I've always enjoyed your stuff and the grace and integrity with which it has been offered. Lp
