    Argee, that the story about Olha is just a legend. We know this story from Primary Chronicle, a 12th century source that is full of legends an biblical references. The story about the siege of Iskorosten is believed to be based on the Nebuchadnezzar's siege of Jerusalem by Byzantine chronicler Georgi Amartol. The Iskorosten was burnt down in reality though. The similar situation with the baptism of Olha. Byzantine sources confirm her visit to Constantinople, but not the emperor's attempt to marry her. Moreover, the emperor had a wife back then Also, Rurik is also most likely to be just a legend. He was mentioned only in the same 12th century Primary Chronicle, there are no earlier sources that mention him And a small correction, it is Kyiv, not Kiev Also, it is interesting that you've chosen red as one of the main colors. From what I've read, it was a popular color in Rus, especially among nobility

      Thank you for your comment, sounds like you are much more familiar with the sources than I am. I do remember reading/hearing about the divergent accounts on the episode in Byzantium based on how everybody wanted to play it back home. In some ways when talking about history it always is important to remember that for long periods of time we are depending on 1-2 sources on a subject, maybe supported by archeological evidence. As for Ukrainian/Russian names, thank you for pointing that out, things like that do matter these days and I'm fixing it at least in the title after finishing writing this comment.

      @@HistoryandDice thank you. I understand that a lot of people are used to the transliteration from russian, but it happened because Ukraine was under russian control and at some point even Ukrainian language was oppressed so you couldn't be familiar with Ukrainian forms of names

    you fail to mention that haithebu also called hedeby (danish) was the biggest town in denmark during the viking age. the nydam ship was taken by the germans from denmark after we lost the battle of 1864 ; whence we lost southern schleswig to germany. germans have never been vikings

    • @HistoryandDice
      @HistoryandDice Місяць тому

      Hello, thank you for comment. First all, yes, you are right about Hedeby, however I'd argue just from looking at the plates in both museums it is fairly obvious that everybody there is very aware of the Danish past of that place and indeed parts of Schleswig, not the least also due to the rights granted to the Danish minority in Schleswig Holstein. I don't think I ever made any claims about German vikings. That would have been wrong on many counts not the least that there were no Germans in the 9th century. Or at least nobody who would call themselves Germans. Germans as people and Germany as country come into existence much later (how much later can be discussed). Hence we'd be talking in anachronisms. I'm not an ethnologist either so I can't really make a call on whether there is an overlap in this period between Germanic and Nordic peoples. There was one for sure in earlier centuries, just to give an example look at the Cimbri who came from Jutland. At least they were still culturally very close in the early middle ages and looking at the History of Schleswig this are has been pretty much the border region between say a danish and germanic/german culture and later the German and the Danish sphere of rule for more than a millenium. For me the museums offer a very interesting view into the early medieval age as well as the later history of the regions.

    Nice video! Sometimes you speak really quickly though, you might want to relax (?) a bit and take your time (it may also be you speak quickly normally heh), later you can cut pauses in post-production, but sometimes it feels like you rush through information a bit! But overall I liked it! Keep up good work! Cheers!

      Indeed, this one is very western centric. I’d hope for another one but not sure how to fill it up to 8 or 12 factions that are meaningful enough in this period, especially considering this is meant to be played on conjunction with age of crusades.

    This is a really interesting perspective on miniature painting, really good insights. It's quite apt as I have started recently painting my Legions Imperialis miniatures and this approach definitely applies. With such a small scale, there really isn't a need for huge amounts of detail and this is the technique I'll be using :)
