This is so beautiful and thank you for your wise words. I was 18 when I first sang this aria and had no idea what I was doing. lol. My teacher entered me in a competition the week after I first saw it and she said would be good for experience. I cane third. 40 years on, I am singing Raimondo in Lucia and then going on tour around Australia singing Colline . Its a long game indeed. Thank you sir for sharing.

Great discussion! I hated opera, despite coming from a musical family, until college. I saw Beverly Sills on Johnny Carson and was thunderstruck. One of my adult children still lives at home, so I just called him in and asked, “what do you think this guy’s profession is?” He offered, “rock singer, professional wrestler.” I said, “he’s a pretty well-known opera singer!” Btw, I saw your Mefistofele a few years ago - GREAT portrayal.
