A Walk & Golf Cart Ride Through One of Our Pollinator Meadows
Переглядів 14221 день тому
This video documents a detailed look at one of our pollinator meadows as it appeared in Late July 2024 experiencing a severe drought. We have never planted these areas with seeds. Our management over the last 36 years has been restricted to once yearly mowing in February, spot spraying invasives in Spring and Summer, and allowing selective trees to come up creating a savannah-like setting that ...
1953 Ford Golden Jubilee Tractor Performing Trail & Road Maintenance

My 1953 Ford Jubilee Tractor (NAA) is very handy maintaining our 4-miles of trails and primitive roads. This video highlights using this tractor with a middle row buster to maintain water bars as a key tool for erosion control. For my 37 years of ownership this Ford Jubilee tractor has been my reliable "go to" machine. It is totally original except for the 6-volt Pertronix Ignitor that was inst...
Spot Spraying Invasive Plants in Pollinator Meadows June 4, 2024

Over the years my land has taught me what and not what to do. It has also taught me to recognize invasive plants and what I want to stay and want to leave. This video focuses on early June when I limit deer tongue. Different invasive plants have different times of the year when I focus on them. The video also shows the result of succusses from previous years carried over into the current year.
Tree removal Area Converted to Pollinator Meadow One Year Later May 2024

From January to the end of March 2023 we had about 450 large white pine trees removed from a 1/4 mile, 40-foot-wide piece of land. We then had the land cleaned up with a forestry mulcher. After that, I seeded the area with the hope to add to what is naturally in the soil. Our plan has been to turn this parcel into a pollinator meadow. Spot spraying will be necessary as invasive plants will also...

When I turned 72 years of age, I thought it was time to purchase a County Line 25-ton log splitter. Well, I finally got a moment to view this. I don't have notifications turned on, so I always come late to these videos. Both the plum tree and the apple tree brought back some fond memories : a neighbor of ours had a plum tree in their farthest corner of their back yard, (which was closest to us.) I remember this large girl ( who also happened to be a deaf mute), climbing up in that tree one day. I was watching her down below. I don't think the owners appreciated it. ;-) That would have been about 1962-or 3. I might have been about 8. The apple tree looked like our apple tree , and oddly enough, at the far corner of our lot which put it within about 30 feet of the neighbors plum. I always remembered it producing the apples in mid-summer, (about now), . . . not a real good eating apple,....whereas other apple trees in the neighborhood were late apples, (and perhaps, nicer eating apples than ours were.) But Mom made many pies from ours. I miss Mom. Your navigating thru that pine forest was scary, . . . and very exciting! I thought we were gonna run into something. ;-) Another awesome video Ken! Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to the next.

Today while brush hogging, a stick got flung up under the tractor and into the fan shroud. The fan chopped it up into the radiator and gave me a nice big old leak. No wonder the local dealer (Long Island, NY) wants $5,400 to replace mine. Have you replaced your upper steering column bearing, spring, and washer things? I have not seen it done on UA-cam except when rebuilding the complete steering assembly. I need to just replace the top bearing and don't know how.

    • @kensshowtell
      @kensshowtell 28 днів тому

      No, I have not. However, I replaced the oil fill plug at the base of the steering box/column with a Zirk fitting and filled the box and entire column with John Deer Corn Head Grease using my grease gun until the grease pushed oil out the top of the steering column. This grease is a non-cavitating grease which means it flows like thick oil and will move back in place after it is pushed aside by mechanical movement. The primary reason the upper steering column bearing, spring wears out is because regular gear oil will not stay up there, and you really can't pump in up there from the bottom. Made a noticeable difference.

I don't have play or binding, I just noticed when I pulled my wheel the spring and bushing were all rusty and filled with dirt. I cleaned it all up thinking I could replace it but it does not look doable with the steering column inhe place and steering shaft in the column. I did do a heavy lube job and poured 90W down the center of the hollow steering shaft as a temporary hold over. Using your other UA-cam I am going to replace my gas tank. Thank you very much for your kindness and for watching my video. It took me about 1-year (off and on) to get the ignition system and D-Jetronic fuel injection systems to work well. This was after I installed a new stainless steel exhaust system, new Bilstein shocks and a new steering damper. I also had to do some work on the interior and exterior lights, fix the glove box door, and fix the vacuum operated automatic door lock system. Now the cart has no issues. There are other videos on my channel documenting some of this work. Now the car is fabulous.

    You may remember my wife inherited her father's 1953 Jubilee, when he passed away last summer. We've used it to maintain areas of his and my mother in laws land that had been neglected when he got to the point he was unable to. Last winter when the weeds died down, I found many attachments and have future projects that I plan on using them for. Your channel has been a great way for me to learn just about everything I've needed to know about his old tractor. I absolutely love using it. Thanks for talking the time to make these videos and as always, I'm looking forward to the next one! - Stephen

    I notice that your front wheels are as wide apart as the rear wheels, just like my '54, whereas the front wheels on my 850 are set inwards. I don't know the reasoning for either way, but was just curious if there actually is a reason. Also, it sure would have been a nice feature on these old tractors if they had a hand parking brake like the older model cars and trucks.

    • @kensshowtell
      @kensshowtell Місяць тому

      Thank you for watching. The spacing for the front wheels are adjustable. I've never moved mine as the topography of our land makes a wider stance more desirable. I do believe that the spacing of the front wheels on my tractor have never been moved. A closer spacing would make steering easier. A hand brake for parking would be very nice. I assume you do know that they do have a parking brake of sorts. The little pawls next to each brake pedal can be rotated to engage either or both brakes to act as a parking brake. Kind of a pain to use but they do work.

    • @ralpharvin2668
      @ralpharvin2668 Місяць тому

      @@kensshowtell yes, I knew about the pawls. I would have to do some work on them to make them operable. Also, I had not thought about the wider spacing of the front wheels as being the reason why the NAA is harder to steer. Thanks!

    • @kensshowtell
      @kensshowtell Місяць тому

    Is there any advantage to sharpening further in towards the middle of Brush Bull. I noticed on my John Deere that some replacement blades are just sharpened a few inches from the tips and others many inches further towards the center. Those second ones seem to cut better. I haven't really done a good test though

    • @kensshowtell
      @kensshowtell Місяць тому

      I really don't know. However, I do know that the majority of the cutting is done towards the end of the blade as that is where it is spinning the fastest. It is also where the majority of the lifting action comes from. Therefore, I just sharpen where the blades were sharpened at the factory.

    • @kensshowtell
      @kensshowtell Місяць тому

      Thank you for watching and taking your time to comment. No, I just tightened them up pretty good. Yes, it can be done on the ground. You would just have to raise each corner to give you clearance and wiggle room. By the way, I can tell a difference between the KBY and Bilstein in this car. Tighter, better ride, improved cornering.

    • @kensshowtell

      @@doctavic2868 I think you could. However, you would have to disconnect both rear flexible brake hoses remove both rear wheels and remove the exhaust system that goes under the right rear axle. All to allow both axles to drop enough to release the tension in the coils. My pads were good.

    An amazing vehicle and a fantastic way to start off your 54 , I recently acquired a 1954 two-door sedan from Alabama. Initially, I faced several challenges with vapor lock, but I resolved the issue by installing an inline pump, and now everything runs smoothly.

      Thank you for watching and commenting. Yes, the 6-volt, low pressure in-line pump I installed on my 1954 car solved the issue of hard starting due to the car sitting for several weeks between driving which allowed the fuel to drain back to the tank. My car has never experienced vapor lock. They are indeed fun vehicles to own from a bygone time.

    Very enjoyable! Last year my wife and myself planted a huge portion of our vegetable garden in Zinnia's which did fantastic. We collected all the heads in the fall, dried them, crushed them up flower heads, petals, and seeds. We had a 5 gal bucket nearly full of this mix and we broadcasted them in the garden again along with sunflowers and they are teaming again. I wonder what I would have to do to prepare the field that I have been mowing using the remainder of the Zinnias as well as other flowers? I bet she wouldn't want me to mow that field anymore!
