aren't you suppose to leave the one seal out of the reverse high drum
Great videos love then thanks for the precuios info..
Thank you for posting! This was very helpful.
Thank you very much, this video is super helpful
Is that plunger supposed be easy to push or does it have a stifness to it when your moving it
The kick down plunger on mine is really solt when u push on it
I did my 33' rv th400 two years ago . Had previous experience with my '65 NoveSS 283 powerglide conversion to 350hp 350 + th400 hd.. Had driveline cut too long and smashed the output bearing. Learned my lesson after 3 rebuilds with B&M parts. Transmission was too strong for the rear 3.08 and split the carrier In two. Replaced with a stronger '66 carrier. Decided to "tow truck Allison" my HD rv 400. Put all the best parts in and went for the Honda ,005 clutch clearance. PERFECT!!!😮 Shifts like a dream Also added temperature and pressure gage on dash. Sweeet.
What is the purpose of removing the spring under the accumulator piston?
Makes it shift harder.
Terrible camera work. Too much not in the picture.
He stated removing the 3rd accumulator spring in the valve body deletes the band, he left the band out, but then he installed the intermediate servo to use with the band. I'm confused. Does leaving the spring out of the 3rd accumulator in the valve body eliminate intermediate band apply?
Plugged apply but left piston in. Yes no band required unless you want engine braking.
@@BrianSwayne so for engine braking all that would need to be done is adding the band with all the same mods?
@@inscoredbz Yes and dont plug apply hole.
@@BrianSwayne so the accumulator pressing on the servo is what applies the intermediate band?
@@inscoredbz yes
Everyone is telling me that 3/16 is to big for the 1-2 shift hole. They recommend 1/8. I want firm shifts, but I don't want to break my sprag. What do you think? Which check balls do you use?
Go .110 to .120 and use check balls.
Would this work only 2 check balls ?
Yes but have to have HD sprag
@@BrianSwayne I do 😎
Top center and middle center.
I have a 4l80e 34 element sprag, I have mine drilled to 3/16. Which check balls should I use?
If my Tranns is stock Can I do this I want harder shifts
Unfortunately, this video doesn't show how to check end play. I have no idea what Brian is doing to check it? Is he pushing up on the end of the output shaft? Is he pushing up on the top of the planetary. The world has no idea because it's not shown in any way shape form of fashion.
You the man.

This has been one of the most informative videos I've ever watched, some really cool well-kept secret tricks, I have two questions do you check your clearances before soaking the clutches or after and I found it odd that you didn't use the studs to line up the valve body is there a reason for this?? I thought it would be a good idea ??Thank you DAN LAPLANT Rochester New York
Yes check clutches dry. I have been doing this for a long time. These vids are over 20 years old.
What is the part number for the shins and thank you for the video!
I posted part # in comments.

I do not want to eliminate the lock up feature, what steps do I ignore? the hammering of the aluminum plug, or the drilling into the lock-up body or both. My instructions does not explain...Many Thanks I have an 1981 Corvette and have built the engine up to 350 hp.
This is Transgo's video. I don't have instructions to view so you would need to find that out in there. Sorry
Do you need the up facing seal on the forward and direct drum
If you dual feed leave drum seal out of high but leave it in forward. If u remove in forward it just engages harder into gear.
@@BrianSwayne darn it's done I left them both out with no cave washers I'll see how it does tomorrow it's for my old service truck
Great video, you never mentioned a case saver ring or a four tang washer for the case before the tail shaft assembly is installed. Is there a reason for leaving those out?
Probably just forgot. Was made over 20 years ago.
So what do you do with the check balls then after you do the modification to valve body and separator plate do you leave the same amount of check balls in or do you leave some out?
If it's just a stock rebuild I would leave all of them in.
What About 2002 Ford with a 5.4 With an automatic transmission I’m not sure what kind of transmission I have anyway going 70 mile an hour in cruise control I’m going up hill then all of a sudden you feel like a speed bump in the road but of course there’s no speedbump what could that be
I think that's a normal condition. I rented a Ford moving truck and it did the same thing only on cruise. I would disengage.
Cool video really helpful in everything..I have a th400 that don't shift normal driving or when I try to shift manually .only at high rpms also only got it to shift in 2nd and let off not sure if it even shifts into 3rd at high rpms I've checked govenor and looks in good shape shaft moves and plastic gear is good and put new vacuum modulator still acts up any idea as to what it could be ..any help would be appreciated..
Pull out the governor and have a look at the valve sticking
Awesome experimenting too..With all the different mods...
Sad that the video is blurry. Hard to watch it.
It was made 20 years ago.
Pretty clear to me

This is a great tutorial for the TH400. I found an inner lip seal and an inner beveled seal (without a thin lip) in my rebuild kit. They have the identic size for the inner size of the intermediate piston and the direct drum piston. Does anybody knows where to use the lip seal and where to use the beveled seal.
All the 400 seals for pistons have a lip.
@@BrianSwayne yes you are completely right. After I've read your answer I checked the kit again and there are 3 inner lip seals with the same diameter in it. One with the lip pointing inwards to the middle and two with the same diameter that have the lip to the outside. The one with the inner lip is for the intermediate piston and the two with the lip to the outside I suspect that they are for the direct and forward drum. I was confused because I didn't realise that the intermediate seals against the inside. Thank You from germany.
Man! You're a Rock Star wi'this shit
why why does this video need music???
This video was done by Transgo.
Couldn't continue watching with you using a 1/2 impact
This is a very knowledgeable video but there a couple things he forgets to show the case c clips ther 1 thin 1 large beveld and 1 large non beveld also the shaft holes must line up dont pur opposite this will cause problems
I see Its a Buick GN...
Where did you get the drum spring compressor. I like the one he used cant find it anywhere?????
I bought it from a Chrysler dealership.
When you say soak the disc for 30 minutes, is it in transmission fluid ?
Yes
I'm gonna plug my th400 case connector because i installed a gear vendors overdrive. What should I do with the kickdown solenoid wire inside the transmission? Thanks
No need to do anything if your not using it.
@@BrianSwayne thanks. I'll just leave it inside the transmission unconnected.
Great video, I really appreciate it👍🏼 Sir my th400 is stuck in park, I got a corvette with 671 blower and I usually turn it off in drive when I pull in garage after a drive up my street, I’ve not drove or started in months and as stated it’s stuck in park, my shifter cable moves, linkage moves as should! I took my pan down to inspect and nothing looks disconnected, I manually moved gear selector and “ from my eyes” I don’t see anything? Can you please help with a process of elimination as to what to look for, I sure appreciate that as I’m in dire need of move car ( getting it out of park) as I’m selling my house and I will be rebuilding my th400 after I move ( thanks to your videos) ANY HELP GRATEFULLY APPRECIATED 👍🏼👍🏼
HORRIBLE CAMERA!
You planning to make a video as detailed with a better camera?
Nice clear instructions - makes me feel confident that I could do it.
Thank you for the video. Bell housing was cracked on the truck I just bought and have no other alternative to doing it myself or staring at my broken down truck because I cannot afford a new trans. One question so far. Wheee can I rent the spring compressor you are using at around 18 min into the video? I’ve asked everyone I know and called auto parts stores, taken the part into the stores even and they have no clue. I eventually used a couple c clamps to take one off and the springs went everywhere. 2 still missing!
Where are you located? I heard Ottawa on the radio
When th' hits t' fan,,, bottom feeders survive! Proud!
Its not funny but Im laughing my ass off, sorry dude
See the oh shit face when the fluid spilled over like the Niagara Falls
good video reminds me of high school!
Dude this video is so descriptive it's just what I needed to replace my reverse servo
Right on get to work.
01:48 omg look at that mullet 😮
does anyone know where I can get the book? I just ordered the kit and was told they only send a one page instructions.
There is no book.Just instructions with kit.
Brian Swayne ok hopefully it's pretty simple with the video. what springs you recommend for a 1978 trans am with a built 400
that guy did not cuss one time during that install....impressive
Installed one on the 700r4 here, it's a pain in the fucking ass and nerve wrecking..but man it performance.
transgo needs to put out a new video. and they only give a one page instructions. bs
thanks
Great video.
working on a 2nd gen, demonstrating shifter on a 3rd gen. yup, I caught that lol
