Taiwan is a very attractive country for people who like to travel around and see interesting places instead of laying on far away or busy beaches. In the past my family and I only visited the main cities of Taiwan like Taipei, Keelung, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung always carrying our baggage with us. In recent years we discovered it is more relaxed to stay a couple days in one city before going to the next city and take a local train or regional bus every day to discover smaller places and areas around the bigger cities. Public transport and taxis in Taiwan are relatively cheap compared to the rates in Europe so the daily surprise trips are affordable. With the video series “Attractive Taiwan - Interesting places” we want to share our impressions of the surprise places we have visited in the past years which can be seen as suggestions to others when planning a holiday to Taiwan. We hope you will enjoy watching each video.

Hi Charles! Leuk om weer iets van je te horen. Alles goed met je? Terugkijkend was mijn vaartijd toch wel de mooiste periode in mijn leven. Ben inmiddels alweer 76 jaar en 11 jaar met pensioen, maar nog steeds actief op de Centrale Diemen als een van de 6 rondleiders. Zoals je ziet vermaak ik mij wel met mijn jaarlijkse zwerfvakanties op Taiwan, ben net weer terug van een 3-weekse vakantie. Door de internationale corona-maatregelen heb ik helaas de afgelopen 3 jaar moeten overslaan.

Hi Felix, bij de KJCPL hadden de stuurlui en WTK's dezelfde gouden strepen. De WTK's hadden in tegenstelling tot andere Nederlandse maatschappijen geen scheepsschroef op hun revers, maar in plaats daarvan hadden ze een blauw fluwelen ondergrond onder de krul en tussen de strepen. Nadat de Kromhout externe explosiemotoren waren vervangen door Daihatsu's was dit een van de beste schepen van de RIL
Kijkt er nog iemand in 2022 ? Vele goede herinneringen aan die tijd. Voer op de “ Straat Hongkong” . Eind 1974.
Zolang de ogen en longen nog werken, zullen er nog altijd oude RIL-ers en wereldwijd andere zeevarenden langs komen gezien het aantal weergaven: 2.226. 😀

Great video, my favourite ships were the classic lined STRAAT series of the early 1970's when I was a lad. They used to call into Australian ports with coffee beans. STRAAT LUZON, STRAAT FREETOWN, STRAAT LAGOS & STRAAT FRASER were ones I still remember. Many were extended in length with a deck crane added. STRAAT HOBART was the newer series before Nedlloyd took RIL over. I remember most of them also took passengers. Thank you Evan, great clip.
Hi Diesel Dave between 1968 and 1970 I came several times to Australia with STRAAT COLOMBO. I still keep nice memories of my favorite city of Sydney. Like the L-ships and F-ships STRAAT COLOMBO was also extended in length in Yokohama in 1970. Hallo Rob, leuk om weer iets van je te horen. We hebben samen op de Straat Rio en Straat Clement/Nedlloyd Clement gevaren. Onze safari door Tanzania en Kenia samen met ... Bates is ook één van mijn mooiste herinneringen uit mijn koopvaardijtijd. Het was al heel lang mijn grote wens geweest om samen met mijn gezin op safari in Kenia te gaan. Die wens is in september 2018 (na meer dan 40 jaar) in vervulling gegaan met een 10-daagse vakantie met mijn vrouw en 2 zonen in Mombasa en een safari naar Amboseli, Tsavo-West en Tsavo-East. In Mombasa moet je niet zelf meer willen rijden. In tegenstelling tot vroeger is Mombasa nu één grote verkeers-chaos. Op mijn UA-cam kanaal "evamullertv" vind je al mijn films uit mijn koopvaardijtijd aangevuld met films van mijn vele vakanties in Taiwan. In 1995 zijn wij verhuisd van Lelystad naar Almere.

Hello Suki Awang, according to RIL archives m.s. Straat Colombo was called m.s. Mercury Lake from 1980 to 1984 and sailing for Mercury Shipping Co. Ltd. and did not sail for PIL. RIL had 6 Straat "C" sisterships. The only Straat "C" ship that was sold to PIL was m.s. Straat Clarence sailing for PIL as m.s. Kota Cempaka from 1979 to 1984 and was demolished at Kaohsiung in 1984.

Wee een mooi filmpje. De randen van de poorten die er na jaren dienst altijd wat scharrig uit kwamen te zien zijn ook zeer herkenbaar. En altijd leuk met die auto's aan dek. Die kwamen tweede hands aan maar dat gaf daar niet zoveel. Herinner me in Dar Es Salaam wat ontwikkelingshulp. Tientallen vorktrucks die het even niet meer deden en in een hoek werden geparkeerd.

Yes, do you remember any boatswains and no. 1 firemen worked with you? After I was transferred to shore working in Head Office Ladenbehandling, my direct bosses were J. Hermans in 1977 & Ed de Nieuwe in 1978 till 1980 under manager of G. Ijtsma. Don't you know them?
I don't remember any names of that period, but I do have some pictures of a boatswain and a no.1 fireman on board of m.v. Straat Colombo. I don't know any colleagues of the Head Office because either I was on duty in Hong Kong or too busy shopping in Hong Kong.
Thank you very much for your production of so many clips making me in memory of RIL and Nedlloyd either the vessels or office of RIL building.
RIL was one of renowned/reputable shipping lines in Hong Kong while Mr Peter Law's (of MH) relationship with Marine Department was very nice and always got the best buoys outside Central waterfront, which were very convenient to both cargo operations and embarkation/disembarkation of personnel either of office or ships.
Most of RIL men were using English in writing no matter on board the vessels or ashore in offices both of Head Office in North Point and MH in Central on Hong Kong Island. Thus I wonder if you are an RIL guy or not as you narrated all clips in Dutch
Yes, I'm a real RIL guy. I started my career with RIL in 1967 as an Apprentice Engineer on board of m.v. Tjibantjet and left RIL 1978 as 2nd Engineer on board of m.v. Straat Clement; in fact the name was m.v. Straat Clement when I came on board in 1977, but when I went home in 1978 the ship's name had changed into m.v. Nedlloyd Clement.
The reason why I narrated my videoclips in Dutch is that I expected them to be interesting for former RIL Officers only. In the meantime I discovered that I've also followers in many others countries. So I still have the intention to add English narration parts after the exicting Dutch narration parts. Maybe in the future I will also upload videoclips with English subtitles within the clips.
If I remember correctly, there were 4 'H" sister vessels were deployed to ASAS-M & ASAS-P which were the profitable lines of RIL and later Nedlloyd
There were 4 "Straat H" sister vessels. m.v. Straat Holland, m.v. Straat Hong Kong, m.v. Straat Hobart and m.v. Straat Honshu. m.v. Straat Holland and m.v. Hong Kong were identical with 2 small cranes in front of the bridge. m.v. Straat Hobart and m.v. Straat Honshu had 1 crane in front of the bridge. I was once working on M. V."Straat Futami' and M. V.'Straat Honshu' as well as in Hong Kong Office from 1973 till 1980.
m.v. Straat Futami was one of the four Straat F sister vessels built in Japan. The other vessels were m.v. Straat Fushimi, m.v. Straat Fiji and m.v.
