Douglas Byng (17 March 1893 - 24 August 1987) was an English comic singer and songwriter in West End theatre, revue and cabaret. Billed as "Bawdy but British", Byng was famous for his female impersonations. His songs are full of sexual innuendo and double entendres. Due to the prejudices of the law and of the public at that time, Byng was a closeted gay performer. To have been out, would have b...

Excellent work.....He was my mentor...guidance.. inspiration. . Not a day goes by that I don't remember him. "Remembered friends, who are dead and gone " Anyone alive now who knew Douglas Byng. . Will agree ...He was a very true ,dear friend...and as sir John Betjeman described him.. "A sadly neglected genius " ... 2:35
John Inman was a SUPERSTAR! What a trouper! RIP, Sir.
I love Cinderella so so much I'm a huge fan of Cinderella
“She’s shocked and shattered she’s a shirt short!!!!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Will/did you ever upload the full thing?
Unfortunatly the full show is not available for upload...
Bungle's static face is a thing of nightmares!! Other than that this was glorious. thanks for uploading it.
Who owns the thighs?
Im sure it was 1994 when i took my son to see Roy Hudd and Jack Tripp in Babes in the Wood at the Sadlers Wells. I love panto !!!
I want a cwackerjack pencil.⛩
It's ceeko
I'd forgotten about Billy Dainty. I remember watching him as a kid. He played a very funny keep fit instructor for Emus broadcasting company, the kid's show. Loved it I remember this Dick Whittington panto too. ❤❤❤❤
Peter Glaze was very creepy on crackerjack.
Memories
When the Old Queen was still alive !?!🧐
Elizabeth 2 and the Queen Mother yes
@@AQUAFONIC 😄👍
In context it was probably Queen Victoria. Musical hall you know.
The Sandman was gorgeous!
I wish the BBC would release these shows on dvd, they're entertainment gold.
It’s funny that all the audience in Edwardian clothes are also in very 1970s colours!
Even stranger,there’s T,V cameras there 😂
wonderful darling
Just how good was Peter Glaze!
Loved Frankie
John Inman what a legend, used to love this show back in the day. You wound find this kind of stand up participatory fun any more I smiled and laughed all the way through, thank you for posting
When I was living in the UK "50 years ago!" I recall Mary Whitehouse, and I recall her being ridiculed in the good old days when people could enjoy and laugh at a little camp comedy. Performances like this were brilliant satire and endeared entertainers to a wide audience without judgment or disparagement, and this in a period of supposed "less enlightened times" yet faced less woke attitude.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT 👏 ❤❤❤😂😂😂😂😂
I remember seeing something like this as a child. Mum always loved the old English variety shows, reminded her of her home land. 🇦🇺🥰
I bet those kids remember to this day the wonderful experience of being on stage.
Barry made this strip his own. I was the musical director for his Aladdin panto in Crewe about 2 years before and he did exactly the same then. Spot on with the musical cues every night - he knew exactly how fast or slow to take things off. It was always great to watch from the pit. I still have his band parts for this that he commissioned many years before. He was a wonderful Twankey, and a very nice - if rather depressed - man. We would often meet for coffee or lunch and he was always depressed!! (mind you - I also had Gorden Kaye in the same show, and when those two got together with me...!!!)
Sad to read about his depression. He was a wonderful dame and a very good actor. According to reports he and John Inman were the best ‘ uglies’ in the business at one time.
When you went to the panto to see a star. I stopped going when I'd never heard of anyone in the cast. I saw Arthur Askey as Widow Twanky. I really did not want to, but was persuaded to go. I'm so glad that I did. He was amazing.
Topical! (50 years ago)
Fabulous 😅 I've this song on CD one of a collection of songs that were banned in the 1930s, I was in pub management and would do this song on karaoke 🎤 nights. I was very good at being a fairy 🧚♂️ I still am 😅
😂
OMG. Terminal Ted Rogers! Mind you, Derek Batey and Nicholas Parsons were always excellent.
Good old fashion British sense of humour 😅 He would drink in the Champion pub Bayswater Rd London, what a laugh we had, often would end up in a sing song. Happy days, thanks John for the laughs on TV or in the pub. Cheers 🥂 🍻
He (She) must have been so hot under all those clothes 😅!
Great fun..love him.
Interesting how they sing ‘grace and favour’ a show John would later go on to star in
So funny, a true starc❤🎉😅
Great gams!
Haha this is brilliant!
He’s doing a great job but he needs audience reaction to help him out.
Unfortunately the recording of Dan Leno he works from was also made without an audience (and includes what sounds like a line fluff - no retakes back then!) You might be interested in watching the whole episode, which follows Frank as he uncovers more facts about Mr Leno, while his co-host, Suzy Klein, researches and performs as Marie Lloyd. Here is a link to the full episode, as featured on Dan Leno expert and impersonator Tony Lidington's UA-cam channel:- ua-cam.com/video/KYEf6VSQBq0/v-deo.html
I was in panto with Frankie Howerd and Dora Bryan at the London Palladium - way back in the early 70s. It was fun, but I'd have loved to do panto with John; they say he was phenomenal as the Dame, and here we can see why. He forms an instant bond with the audience.
Brilliant performer and lovely man. How ironic that when John was recording 'Are You Being Served' the gay lobby was in high dudgeon because they accused him of presenting a gay 'stereotype'. Today we have men who call themselves women who dress like John on City Variety Leeds and the activists think that it's brave and wonderful. I'm gay and think most of them are out and out potty.
He was amazing.
Such fun!
What is this song called?
It was just called "Captain Hook" in the script...
The watcha gang part 30:22
this type of entertainment is certainly not 'easy' so much of memorising and catching the audience attention.! pure class
Sort of reminds me of Maggie Smith.
It is like lifting a veil which, when removed, gives us an eerie link to late Victorian/early Edwardian England. Fascinating.
‘Do you take this woman …’ ‘Would you? 😀😀😀
Good stuff.
What a treat … brilliant
