Welcome to the World Music Institute channel! Founded in 1985 as a not-for-profit, WMI has served as one of the leading presenters of world music and dance within the United States. WMI is committed to presenting the best in traditional and contemporary music and dance from around the world to enrich lives through the arts, promote awareness and appreciation of the world’s rich cultural traditions, and encourage cross-cultural dialogue and exchange. WMI presents virtually and at venues throughout the city of New York and depends on public and private funding to accomplish its mission. Argentinian vocalist, composer, and producer Sofía Rei joined us for a WMI Plus At Home event to discuss ‘Folk and Futurism’ - a project that explores the convergence of traditional Latin American folk culture with contemporary genres and digital technologies. Joining Sofía in conversation was Mireya Ramos and Daymé Arocena, two of the guest artists to perform as part of the debut of the project on Oct 10, 2024 at (le) poisson rouge NYC as part of WMI's Changemakers Series, as well as the project’s producer/co-musical director JC Maillard.
